Yes it's true.  I'm in LA now.  Pretty crazy.

UPDATE.  Ok for the record, the quote "Part of his new job at Snapchat will be building technology infrastructure in-house so that the company can begin to lessen its reliance on partners like Google, Murphy said." is (a) not what Bobby said, (b) not really a focus of my job either.  Thx WSJ for pissing off all my old Google friends.  A more correct statement is that we'll continuously evaluate alternatives, and likely over time develop more infrastructure ourselves, in particular in specialized areas of our apps.  Google is a great partner, and the success of Snapchat would simply not have been possible without Google Cloud, and we expect to work closely together.  Period.

Attention Cloud SQL users: we’ve added a command-line tool to the Google Cloud SDK that makes it easier to manage your cloud databases. The existing Cloud SQL API lets you manage your instances programmatically, but not everyone is fluent in JSON. The new command line tool gives you simple commands like “gcloud sql instances create” to… you guessed it: create a new instance!

The new commands are available through the Google Cloud SDK. And you can check out our Cloud SQL documentation for more info:

2013 was a busy year for Google Cloud Platform. Watch this space: each day, a different Googler who works on Cloud Platform will be sharing his or her highlight from the past year. goo.gl/gWFjKX

You only get a few chances in your lifetime to see a major technology shift, and we are lucky enough to be experiencing two at the same time: mobile and the cloud. The rise of smartphone and tablets are having a fundamental change in user expectations. And cloud computing is changing software development. My favorite moments this year were when we were able to bring these trends together to enable developers to build amazing solutions. Early in the year we launched the Mobile Backend Starter, making it trivial to build no-code backends for android (and later iOS) applications. Then, at Google I/O, we launched some great developer features for cloud connecting your Android app directly in Android Studio... mehr »

Great story on the Google Compute Engine GA release.

My favorite quote:
Working with Google has allowed Snapchat to avoid spending a lot to support its users. “I’ve never owned a computer server,” said Bobby Murphy, a co-founder and the chief technical officer of Snapchat.

Folks, if you own a bunch of servers, chances are you are doing it wrong :-)

We've got a Google Cloud Platform meetup coming up in San Francisco next week. It's a free event for Java developers and software architects interested in App Engine and the broader Google Cloud Platform. It would also be good for Android developers looking for low-maintenance, highly-scalable backend services for their applications.  If you can't go yourself, please spread the word.

In our previous post, we introduced the Google Cloud Console (http://goo.gl/bA9fH), a unified console for managing your Google Cloud Platform services, including all Google APIs.

Today, we’re making it even easier to get started with Google APIs. Explore a list of all Google APIs by visiting the “APIs” section in the Cloud Console. You can see a list of all available methods and even making REST calls to an API, all from directly from within the console.

To access an API from your code, use the “Register App” functionality. This allows you to obtain an OAuth credential (http://goo.gl/LWE4ZJ) or API Key that your app can use to access any Google API. We’ve heard feedback from the APIs console that this can be a confusing process, so we’ve made this a lot simpler. Rather than having to know the type of credential you need, you can simply tell us what kind of platform yourapplication is... mehr »

Lock in, what lock in?

On occasion I encounter the argument that Google App Engine is a proprietary platform, which implies lock-in, which many developers consider a Bad Thing. I’d like to address that complaint. The argument I will be making is this: it’s not as true as you think, it’s mostly unavoidable, and it’s not our strategy - in fact we actively work to minimize it.

It’s not as true as you think

Let’s acknowledge the problem outright: if you develop an application on App Engine, it will require some work to move it somewhere else.

My first “yes, but” to this is to note that there is a bit of an illusion going on. If you’re new to App Engine, you probably feel a sense of lock-in because the runtime environment is very different: it doesn’t allow you to invoke some system calls, write to the file system directly, choose an operatingsystem, or listen t... mehr »

Introducing the Cloud Console
The Google Cloud Console (http://goo.gl/kU0Wn) provides a unified console for managing your Google Cloud Platform services, including all Google APIs.

We know you depend on the console, so we’ve worked hard to ensure it is reliable. We implemented the console as an App Engine application in Java. Even when hit with a 10x traffic spike during the Cloud Platform kickoff session at Google IO (http://goo.gl/oYUY1), we enjoyed watching the app scale seamlessly (http://goo.gl/Kjd6a).

We're still in the very early days of building the Cloud Console, but are excited to share our progress so far. We encourage you to try out what's currently available and watch for regular updates.

We also welcome feedback.  Please share your thoughts with us below or from the "Send feedback" option in the console's gear menu.You... mehr »

#AndroidStudio makes it easy to add a cloud backend right from your IDE.  With a single command you can generate a complete project that includes an App Engine backend and an endpoints module to access the backend from your app. The project also includes built-in support for Google Cloud Messaging (GCM),  to make it easy to sync data across a multiple devices.

With Android Studio you can develop and test your client and server code together in a single environment, and you can generate new endpoints to add your own custom cloud services. When you are ready, you can build and run your server side code locally and even deploy it to production, direct from Android Studio.

The post below shows you how to get started.

There has been a couple of questions about the Google Cloud Platform (App Engine) support in Android Studio here.    While the "official" docs are still being worked out, I thought I'd post this overview of the Google IO demo I did

Building an Android app and want a quick way to add a cloud backend for your data? Mobile Backend Starter gives you everything you need to rapidly set up a backend for your app, without needing to write any backend code.

Mobile Backend Starter includes a server that stores your data with App Engine and a client library and sample app that make it easy to access that data. You can also add Google Cloud Messaging (GCM), set up continuous queries, and use Google authentication.

Check out the post below for details.

Thanks to all who attended our talk at #io13  last week. +Brad Abrams and I had a great time showing off the new Mobile Backend Starter project. The video is now up for everyone to enjoy watching us juggle 2 laptops, 2 phones, and network connectivity to build a cloud-connected Android app. #androiddev   #googlecloudplatform   #googlecloudmessaging   #mobilebackendstarter

Well, that was fun! +Brad Abrams and I gave a talk on writing a cloud backend for your Android app at #io13  today. To demonstrate the new Mobile Backend Starter project, we built Geek Serendipity, which lets you see where geeks with similar interests are hanging out. Within minutes after the talk, geeks using the app popped up all over the US and a few in Europe staying up late to watch the live stream. The app shows the 50 most recent geek locations anywhere in the world. There seems to be something going on in San Francisco...

PS The source code and video are coming. You can get the app here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.turbomanage.sample.geekwatch
