I've not received any comments on this post, and I'm hoping I can get some feedback, as I intend to share these big ideas in a few conference sessions in the coming months.

Are there any other "powerful ideas of math" that you would add to my list? Could some of the ideas listed be removed or combined?

Working on a meta-presentation on "creating effective presentations." It's intended to be short and to the point as there are obviously more comprehensive resources out there.

Can you give me feedback on it?

I'm working on a presentation on debating whether or not we need grades in schools. Struggling to find good reasons to keep grades...

Feel free to help out and add your own perspective to this document, just try and keep the formatting somewhat the same as it is if possible.

Interested in an Google+ Hangout discussing this article? http://www.cut-the-knot.org/ctk/NatureOfProof.shtml

Going to start in 20 minutes. #mathchat #edchat

In particular, I'd like to discuss the aims of the course description for this course (see the article for more), which are quoted below:

"While teachers of mathematics say they want the young people in our secondary schools to understand the nature of proof, that should not be and probably is not their total concern. What these teachers really want is not only that these young people should understand the nature of proof but that their way of life should show that they understand it. Of what value is it for a pupil to understand thoroughly what a proof means if it does not clarify his thinking and make him more "critical of new ideas presented"? The real value of this sort of training to any... mehr »

There's a Google Apps for Education conference happening on the May 4th/5th weekend.

There are some reduced price tickets for BC public school teachers still left (they are $125 cheaper than the full rate). Send me a private message if you are interested in attending the conference with one of these reduced rate tickets and I can give you the registration code for it.

See http://bc.gafesummit.com for details about the conference itself.

I have been working on a new site, and I could use some entries. The idea is to collaborative build a list of high quality inquiry based projects k-12 students can do, and also provide descriptions of students engaging in mathematical thinking.

See http://maththinking.org/ if you want more information, or if you would like to help out.

I think +Dan Meyer has nailed it with this awesome video he created called "Hollywood Hates Math." It really speaks to how our culture views mathematics.

There has been a lot written about this issue, and many attempts to counteract it. Is this something we are always going to have to face as a society? Or can anyone imagine a future where mathematics is not reviled by 90% of the population? If so, how do we get to this utopia?

Hello all,

I'm a learning specialist for technology and math at a small independent school in Vancouver, BC. I'm participating in #etmooc  to evaluate it as a model for getting my staff to learn about technology more independently.

I've posted a first post here. http://davidwees.com/content/social-interactions-and-learning

I'm a bit behind but, oh well... I will do my best to catch up with everyone else.

What topics from mathematics do you think should be present in the k-12 curriculum (at least as an option) which are not currently present?

I'd like to see game theory and graph theory added to the curriculum (and whatever the necessary pre-requisites are, so for certain matrices). Not sure exactly what I would delete.

What resources do people in this group have for IBL in elementary school classrooms? I have some I have collected, which I am happy to share, but I'd love to see what people's ideas are first.

I'm a learning specialist for mathematics and technology at Stratford Hall, a small independent school in Vancouver, British Columbia. I love the focus on learning in my role and my title.

I have spent my career learning about learning (although I would have to say, the past four years have been particularly intense). I blog at http://davidwees.com, tweet as @davidwees and am looking for opportunities to expand my leadership role. I love my school, but as I said before, it is small and I need more room to grow and take on new challenges.

This discussion thread is intended to be a place where we can post ideas on how we would design schools, if we were starting from scratch, using today's technology, and with an unlimited budget (we can limit ourselves later, let's aim for the moon now).

I'm sending out a call for help.

I'd like to create (or if it exists already, learn about) a series of short math videos sharing ways parents can engage their children in learning mathematics.

With my little guy, for example, he and I have played with numbers since he knew what they were. We have explored patterns, doodled with dots, noticed patterns in shapes, built gigantic pyramids out of Lego, and a whole bunch of other activities. I've steered clear of helping him with any computational math because I know he'll get plenty of that in school, but I've been trying to get him excited about using his logical reasoning brain to think about the world and trying to find patterns in it.

I'd like more parents to have this experience, and I think you could show parents what it looks like with some appropriate modelling.

Does anyone want to:... mehr »

I see the word community being thrown around a lot. I strongly suspect this word is over used. I'd really like these online spaces to brand themselves differently.

Am I being pedantic about this? If I can't ask someone in a space to come over last minute to watch my kids, it's not a community.

Does an online space have a social use? Definitely. Is it a community? I'm not convinced.

So uh...Google+ what's up with this useless error message? "You can't invite that many people to a community."

This violates a simple principle of design => Inform users with meaningful information when you give them an error message. What really important piece of information do you think is missing here?

Here are some other thoughts I have on design principles:
