ICELAND. No news from Iceland?… why? How come we hear everything that happens in Egypt but no news about what’s happening in Iceland:

In Iceland, the people has made the government resign, the primary banks have been nationalized, it was decided to not pay the debt that these created with Great Britain and Holland due to their bad financial politics and a public assembly has been created to rewrite the constitution.

And all of this in a peaceful way. A whole revolution against the powers that have created the current global crisis. This is why there hasn’t been any publicity during the last two years: What would happen if the rest of the EU citizens took this as an example? What would happen if the US citizens took this as an example.

This is a summary of the facts:

2008. The main bank of the country is nationalized.
The Krona, the currency ofIceland... mehr »

This is the coolest thing I've seen all week! - Sky Punch

Thanks to +Terry Boswell and +Mahei Foliaki over on Facebook for this amazing photo

This is a rare meteorological phenomenon called a skypunch. When people see these, they think it's the end of the world. Ice crystals form above the high-altitude cirro-cumulo-stratus clouds, then fall downward, punching a hole in the cloud cover. Freakishly weird!

Guarding the Palace

The Doge’s Palace was the seat of the Republic of Venice for centuries before it became part of Italy in 1866. The current palace was constructed between 1309 and 1424. Two facades of the palace border St. Mark’s Square and a third facade looks towards the Venetian Lagoon. The last facade is connected to Venice’s infamous prison by the even more infamous Bridge of Sighs. Each column of the palace is unique from the others. Between the ninth and tenth columns, death sentences and executions were carried out.

Today, the palace serves as a museum. In addition to being able to view the Doge’s apartments, government chambers and the prison cells, the palace also contains a magnificent art collection. Climbing the enormous staircase, the Scala die Giganti, you come to the second floor and look out onthe cou... mehr »

Hubble Captures Violent Birth Pangs of Enormous Star

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has spotted a young star undergoing violent birth.

The star, named S106 IR, has a mass of about 15 times that of our sun and lies approximately 2,000 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus, the Swan. Formed from a cloud of gas and dust with more than 25,000 times the sun’s mass, the star is just about to mature and settle down to what astronomers call the main sequence portion of its life, where it will glow steadily like our sun.

While on a walk tonight I came upon this lovely scene as the sun was beginning to set behind the mountains. It seemed so peaceful that I stood & watched for quite some time, even after I knew I'd taken the photo I wanted.

As I was travelling the coast, I managed to "lose" about 500 shots. In the lost shots, there was one of Cannon beach's Haystack rock, which I wanted to dedicate to +Trey Ratcliff. My friend +Jon Yamasato was actually the first person to post an image that got me wondering what HDRs were, but Trey taught me the rest. I had a system of backing up my memory card nightly, but apparently I missed some. Maybe I accidentally hit cancel midway. My netbook was painfully slow. I blame old age lol.

Without my filters, HDR becomes an invaluable tool. The clouds and the lighting setup for a "make me an HDR" shot.

Good night G+!

Photography Tip: Full Moon Landscape Exposure Settings

You know tomorrow is full moon and here is an easy recipe for a good full-moon landscape exposure:

I switch my camera to Manual mode and usually start with a high ISO setting to verify the exposure and check the composition as it might be too dark to see it with your eyes:

ISO 3200
2 seconds

This usually works very well if the moon is not covered by any clouds - you might have to adjust +/- 1 stop. If the exposure looks OK, I drop the ISO and aperture and got for a 30 seconds exposure:

ISO 400
30 seconds

This should give you the same exposure but with less noise - you can obviously drop the ISO even more and go for a few minute exposures and if you totally like the composition and want star trails you can do this:

ISO 100
16... mehr »

You Guessed It - More Driftwood
I made this image on Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island, Georgia. It was twilight after sunset and though the sky still had quite a bit of colour the foreground was fairly dark. I made three exposures: one to expose for the sky, one for the mid-tones and one for the dark foreground, and then I combined the exposures in post-processing using Photomatix. After that I brought the image in to my new software Nik Color Efex Pro to adjust the colours. I got a great deal on the software at one of those Cyber-Monday sales last month and I am really starting to like using it.

The Passion of Miss Maple

To those in her everyday world, she came off as reserved, orderly, perhaps a bit distant. Really great fashion sense, all agreed on that. Direct? Oh, very. Not so easily labelled, tho - which made some folks exceedingly uncomfortable. She wasn't above using this fact to her advantage when necessary.

Once home... now that was an entirely different matter.

Wow - I almost missed submitting something for #SanFranciscoSaturday :) An in keeping with some of the other images I have seen today, this is an image shot at the wonderful Sutro Baths location. I wish there was a web cam out here that I knew of, because it is on the opposite side of the city from where I live, so I have to drive over the hill just to see what the weather is like. In this town, there are so many microclimates that it is hard to tell what it is doing elsewhere.

Go Cardinal!
