Three Rockets Launched within Hours Explore Auroras over Alaska

Three NASA rockets carrying instruments into active auroras over Alaska to aid scientists studying the northern lights and the interactions of the solar wind with Earth’s upper atmosphere and ionosphere were launched within a nearly two-hour period March 2, 2017.

The instruments were successfully carried on Black IX sounding rockets from the Poker Flat Research Range north of Fairbanks. The first two rockets were launched nearly simultaneously at 12:41 a.m. and 12:42:30 a.m. EST as part of the Neutral Jets in Auroral Arcs mission.  The third rocket launched at 2:50 a.m. EST was part of the Ionospheric Structuring: In Situ and Groundbased Low Altitude StudieS or ISINGLASS mission.

Preliminary reports indicate that data was received from instruments aboard all three rockets.

Community Management Best Practices: Full vs Limited Member setting

Recently, Google made an important update to the way Google+ Communities can be moderated. This update has a direct effect on controlling the quality of content seen in the Community, and making sure only trusted users can share that content.

What is the update?

Community Moderators can now enable the new "Hold Posts for Review" option. If enabled, Moderators can then select who becomes a Limited Member - either Everyone (all current members), or just new members joining the Community.

What's a Limited Member?

Limited Members have full access to comment, +1 and reshare Community content. They can also share content to the community, but it will be placed into a special new queue until a moderator reviews them and decides whether they are appropriate for the general Community members to see. How long it takes for a Moderator to approve/reject the post depends on the Community's Moderators themselves, as they will need to manually review posts in the queue. Posts for regular members (ones who are not Limited Members) do not get held for review.

How does a Limited Member become a Full Member?

If the Community Owners and Moderators decide that a Limited Member has demonstrated that their posts are of high enough quality, the Owner or Moderator can promote the person from being a Limited Member to a Full Member. The reverse is also true, in that Owners/Moderators have the ability to demote Full Members to being Limited Members, as well.

Why the change?

Google have listened to the user feedback, requesting the ability for Community Owners and Moderators to control whether low quality content is seen in the Community.

How is this new Hold for Review queue enabled?

Community Owners and Moderators can enable the Hold for Review queue from within the ‘Edit Community’ dialog of their Community.

Collections tips and tricks
Hello !
Recently one of my page's collection with great support from G+ has now 1 million followers. I would like to share few tips and tricks, having been here for a quite a while :)
(I am not a good writer, so I will just highlight the points. Please bear with me.)

1.First and foremost is know your audience.
Unless you know your audience and their tastes, it is difficult to get real engagement.
2.Timing of the post is as important as the audience. Choose the best day and time, which you can identify after few postings.
3. Present it in the best possible way - headlines, short summary and about 3 or hashtags, with a good picture. It all depends on the niche you are posting about.
I have seen few food collections with blog/web links alone, which don't get good engagement. People don't like link dropping.
4. Another way to attract audience and get good engagement is to create polls on topics, which the audience might be interested or related to you collection.
5.Share your posts with one or two active communities, related to your collection.

Above all we need some good support from G+ :)
I am sure collections with great content are given good exposure from Create team.
It is easy. But, yes, it takes time !

Creating Quality Collections
>Add Words to your Images!<

Collections shouldn't just be about the images and the hashtags.
If a picture speaks a thousand words, imagine how much more it'll be saying when you add just a few words to it!
>> You want to reach out to your audience and get more engagement and followers, don't you?

Don't know where to start?
Not good with words?
No Sweat!

Go Back to Basics
* WHO is in the picture?
* WHAT is happening?
* WHERE was the picture taken?
* WHEN was the picture taken?
* WHY

See how easy it can be to create quality Collections?

Create Compelling Collections

+Shane Dallas shares some great tips on how to find your voice and create Collections that stand out.

For more tips and insights, tune into #Collections101 on March 28th! https://plus.google.com/+FaithTanSM/posts/YHY9aLDRPHX

I love the creative process of deciding on and building Collections. After putting together a number of them over the past 2 years, there are some important lessons I've learnt.

Be Different
Number one is to try something different. Don't do what everyone else is doing, build a Collection that only you can build. For my travel photos, I post different locations to the usual tourist route and it is what I'm known for. Remember to not find your niche with your Collections, find your voice instead!

Choose A Narrow Theme
I've seen wonderful Collections of subway stations, doors and windows - it works beautifully. I tend to have mine a bit broader. For example, notice with the Egypt title, it says Lower Egypt - why? Because I know that any journey to Upper Egypt (Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel) is going to give me many dozens of photos to post, and I don't want my Collections to get too large - which would certainly occur is I put all my Egypt photos into one Collection.

Cover Photo and Colours
Look at the photo with this post - notice how I try to match the dominant colour in the cover photo with the colour of the Collections. This occurs in 4 of the 6 Collections - especially with Somaliland and Iconic Monuments. Iran is different, as there are so many colours coming through the window there is no dominant one, so purple seemed to match with the Collection name of "Majesty". Also Lower Egypt - the colour reminded me of what it was like to be in the tombs, that neutral colour - but not dark and depressing - it felt more vibrant to me, so I chose a lighter tone.

Order your Images Carefully
I always try to avoid posting similar images together. For example, in the Sana'a Collection, I try to mix images of people, buildings and cityscapes - you won't find too many of each clumped together. Likewise, for Indonesia, the images come from 5 different area I've visited in the country, but it is rare to see more than 2 photos from the same area posted in a row.

Community Management Best Practices: Collaboration Driving Community Engagement

This post was written by Community Vanguards member +nomad dimitri, who runs the Foodies+ Community along with +Azlin Bloor

Cooking together through posts: Labs at Foodies+

It is almost 4 years since we launched the "Let's cook together" experiment at our Foodies+ Community. It has been a success and, 4 years later, it is still running. I am especially proud of it because, to work, it implies a lot of commitment and trust among participants, so the bar is very high.

"Let's cook together": a new series at foodies+

Here's the idea:
- a foodie+ member comes up with a fun recipe or menu to try together with other members & makes an invitation post
- members that are interested in participating do so by commenting on the invitation post & arrange responsibilities ie I will cook this, you cook that (example: see comments on post above)
- each participating member cooks their own part of the recipe or menu as agreed
- each participating member prepares a post on their own part of the recipe or menu
- on "publication day", all participating members post together, linking each other's posts together & tagging them with #foodiescooktogether
- the end result are interlinked posts by multiple members covering a particular recipe or menu

Example:
1. My invitation post (here: http://goo.gl/nsBPo) was to help me cook Chef Scott Carsberg's famous double dessert: Orange confit + Chocolate Caramel Mousse
2. I made the Orange confit (which is hard enough) & I was looking for members to attempt the even more difficult Chocolate Caramel Mousse
3. To my delight, not one but three members, +Lisa Watson , +Sally Weatherley  & +Anne Ricci , rose up to the challenge
4. We all posted together & interlinked our posts - this means that from any of the posts you can find the others by clicking on the links at the end of the post (example final post here: http://goo.gl/Mbie2)

Ready to try it?

It is almost 4 years since we launched the "Let's cook together" experiment at our Foodies+ Community. It has been a success and, 4 years later, it is still running. I am especially proud of it because, to work, it implies a lot of commitment and trust among participants, so the bar is very high.

(You can read the details below but, essentially, participants schedule to cook a particular dish "together", coordinating their cooking & posting and, essentially, "interlinking" their posts on launch day, so each post points to all the others. This way, on a single day, the same recipe is published by several members while a reader, by clicking on one post, gets the links to all the other ones as well, thereby accessing different "takes" on the same dish.)

The concept has broadened through the years (the hashtag is now #labsatfoodiesplus) and "to lab" a recipe in our community also means to test another member's recipe & interlink the posts.

The additional value of undertaking complicated experiments in a community is that it helps you identify truly committed members among whom, eventually, you can recruit successful moderators.

(And here, just below, is the reshared post i refer to above).

Hold For Review

Find out how to take advantage of this useful Community setting with Community Vanguards member +Margaret Tompkins

What Is It? And How Do I Get It? Hold for Review is the strongest feature provided by Google to protect communities from pornography and spam. It is a community wide setting enabled by an owner or moderator. From the 3 dots menu on the upper left of your community home page, select “Edit Community”. The second setting is “Hold posts for review”. When invoking Hold for Review, you will be given two choices for “Whose posts do you want to review?” The options are EVERYONE and ONLY NEW MEMBERS.

How Does It Work?

With Hold for Review, posts are held in a special queue that is only seen by moderators and owners. Your members don’t see the post until you have had a chance to review it to see if it is suitable for your community. If you have selected EVERYONE as an option, then all of your current and new members will be considered “new”. That means that every post shared to your community will be held in that queue waiting for your review. If your community has lots of members, think carefully before you enable this feature for EVERYONE. If you have chosen ONLY NEW MEMBERS, then only those members who make their first post after you have invoked this feature, will have their posts held in the queue.

Moderating the Hold for Review Queue:

You have a number of options for each post in the Held for Review queue. Select the 3 dot menu to find the options “Auto-approve all posts” and “Ban”. The other options are available directly on the post itself. You may plus the post, comment on it, and share it also.

Auto-approve all posts

Selecting this option will approve the post you are reviewing and all future posts from this profile will automatically go directly to your community without any review. This is perfect for those posters you know will be valuable members of your community.

Ban

You may ban the poster and this works the same throughout the community. The poster will not be allowed to post further to your community. However, it doesn’t remove any posts that are already there.

X

You may reject the post being reviewed by selecting the “X” button. The next post from the same poster will also go in the Hold for Review queue. They will continue to arrive there until you Auto-approve the poster or ban the poster.

Check Mark

You may approve the post being reviewed by selecting the “Check Mark” button. The next post from the same poster will also go in the Hold for Review queue. They will continue to arrive there until you Auto-approve the poster or ban the poster.

All “new” members are considered limited members. When you Auto-approve a poster, that profile becomes a full member. If you select the EVERYONE option, then all of your members instantly become limited members.

My Tips for Using this Feature: When you see a post here, you know that you are looking at the first post from a new member. This is the perfect opportunity to welcome the poster to the community and perhaps share a link to an on-boarding message or rules post. It’s also a great opportunity to educate your new member about various procedures that you may have.

You may use the single time approval or rejection (Check Mark or “X”) to process posts where you are not sure of the poster. I do this on all the posts that are questionable. This allows you plenty of time and experience with a poster before they become a full member of your community.

Strict Filters

Google automatically provides your community with a set of spam filters. You may optionally use “Stronger content filters & controls.”. To get these strict filters, from the 3 dots menu on the upper left of your community home page, select “Edit Community”. You will see “Content controls” for the strict filters. Move the slider to the right.

With strict filters in place, the pornography and spam will be trapped in the spam filters and you can clean this out when you want. You will find more false positives with strict filters than without them. This is a small price to pay for keeping spam out of the public areas of your community.

Posts from approved full members may still end up in the Spam Filter. Being fully approved doesn’t stop that action.

Recommendations: I’m one of the owners of the Landscape Photography Community. Its one million members generate thousands of posts and being a large public community, it is often the target for spammers. Since we have invoked Hold for Review and Strict Filters, we have NOT had a single pornography post make it to the public areas of the LPC and very few spam posts have made it public.

I strongly recommend that you use Hold for Review and Strict Filters on your community. I also recommend that you invoke this for only new members rather than everyone.

1 Year Of Google+ Create: +Michael Brown shares his favorite moments

My 1 Year Anniversary with Google+ Create

I can't believe it has been an entire year that I have been part of the +Google+ Create team! One of the founding members in fact! It's still surreal to me to think the +Google+ team recognized me as a creatively passionate, interesting individual. Since joining the team, I have been blessed to watch the program grown to accepting up to 300 or more members. All of the early members can be seen here: http://plus.google.com/create.

What makes this program so special to me is that it allowed me to connect with other creatively passionate and interesting individuals around topics of interests that we all share. Not only that, we are celebrated for it with a lot of cool insider perks and opportunities to have our creative work placed front and center across many Google products. In short, as Googlers would like to put it, we're Google+ Celebrities.

My greatest moments throughout this amazing year was meeting with some of the +Google+ Create team, learning their backgrounds, and them celebrating and inspiring me to do what I've already passionately been doing. Create. This program reminds me a lot of +Casey Neistat's ad with +Samsung Mobile celebrating creators that you can check out here: https://youtu.be/JKpeIxh4ScY

So no matter if you are a mother of three who loves to code, a chef who sees your food as art, happily married spouse who enjoys talking about relationships, a sports fanatic who loves talking about sport statistics, or even someone who loves keeping up with pop culture and writing about it, come create with us!

Apply here: https://goo.gl/4UZe6S

Heres to another amazing year! It's already off to an awesome start!

1 Year Of Google+ Create: +Leo Deegan, "Creators help creators create.....And eat lunch. :P"

Retrospection

Thinking back over the year since the inception of the Google+ Create program, the fond memories I have is meeting Create members face-to-face, whether over video conference or, in this particular case, in person.

Mid December of last year, +The Social Traveler here along with +Lori Friedrich +Alex Lapidus and +Sean Cowen paid us a visit on campus, and it was such a fun gathering. As they say, a single creator creates, a group of creators have lunch.

Or maybe I just say that. Well, every time I'm in the company of creative types like +Alex Lapidus +Linda Villers +Swee Oh +Sam Breach +Eric Raeber +Roxanne Bouche' Overton +Dan Shehan +Sunny Wu +Sean McLean +Lora Lee Chapman +Elizabeth Hahn +Brian B. Sørensen +David R Robinson +Cynthia Pyun +Mitchell Weinstock +George Fletcher +Shelly Corbett +Nigal Raymond (and more than I can count) it always seems to involve food. Or beer. Preferably both.

Anyway, how'd we get off topic.

Back to mid December, that visit was memorable because +The Social Traveler allowed me to take his portrait with my new film camera I was trying out. What a dude to stand patiently, letting me awkwardly fiddle with my camera settings to fire off my first shot.

And that's what I was probably trying to say. Creators help creators create.

And eat lunch. :P

1 Year Of Google+ Create: +Valeria Bressan shares what makes Create special

What makes Create special?

I joined Google+ Create as a proud founding member, not sure about the road ahead, but very excited about the program. I quickly came to realize that this was a very special place, and over the year I have been fortunate to meet many of you, to share ideas and to collaborate with like-minded people.

The first initiative that I collaborated was the Earth Day Celebration (https://goo.gl/VAEDWL) and it was an amazing experience.

I participated in many other initiatives after that, and at one point I collaborated with +Tauno Erik on a poem (https://goo.gl/9tSqLg).

The collaboration with +Tauno Erik was just the first step towards something much bigger…

Over the past few months, Tauno and I have been collaborating on the production of our first book. It has been a long process, full of brainstorming, hard work, and many long nights, but a truly rewarding and lovely experience.

We can’t wait to share more details with all of you. For now, this is just a quick preview on what is coming up. Stay tuned, connect and follow us. We plan to share more as we progress…

Happy anniversary, Create, and thanks Google+ for such an amazing program!

1 Year Of Google+ Create: +Paolo Amoroso shares our passion for community building

Google+ Create turns 1
One year ago today Google announced Google+ Create, a program for recognizing creative, passionate and active Google+ users plus.google.com/create I had the privilege of being an early member and watching the program grow.

What makes Create special to me is realizing how many talented and passionate people there are here and how much they value Google+. I learn their stories, see the ever new things they create, and watch them experiment with the platform.

My best Create moment was learning about the program and realizing Google is as much passionate about Google+ as we are.

My Year on G+Create
#CreatorsFirst
Being among creators is special. You know immediately all things that you are not good at. On the better side of it, that helps focus on what skills and talents one has already. I have talked in public and committed to neutrality and to becoming Google+ Top Contributor. I have solved a very important question about the value of time, or I think I did it for myself. It's the time spent in collaboration with Top Contributors team on G+Help Community and the time spent with the team on G+Collections Community.

1 Year Of Google+ Create: +Clarissa Silva Shares Highlights

As someone who uses behavioral science to study relationships, Clarissa has used Google+ and Create for research purposes. We've enjoyed her insights and are looking forward to another year of success.

Happy 1st Anniversary, +Google+ Create! Today, I celebrate 2 wins because of Google create!”

How google create helps me understand human behavior better
As a behavioral scientist and researcher, collecting data to better understand human phenomena is sometimes challenging. See, for us, we really on what is “convenient” to us which means our students or our clients. But, in a rapidly evolving tech world where we live on devices, rising cost of healthcare and many opting out of college, how do we include their voices?

I decided to use “non-traditional” data collection methods and google create as a place that is rich with data. We consume and share so much data, we just don’t realize that it is. Our opinions=data. Our comments=data. Our posts=data.

#ResearchWin I have collected 1500 responses on polls and questionnaires using google create within days and weeks. In the traditional approach, it would take me years to collect those many responses.

#BehavioralScienceWin super excited about this I am also assisting the google create team with identifying a few new Topic Areas: Lifestyle, Relationships and Dating. For this project, I am assisting by helping identify new talent to enhance content, provide users with many solutions to address their relationship challenges, better inform content and how the algorithm will behave in those topic areas.

I also started a new collection: Dating and Relationship Science that features the research that google create has helped me better understand. Thanks to everyone that participated in my research! You are helping others find solutions!

Want to join the program? Here's the Create Application Form: http://goo.gl/HuPMcf

Special thanks to +Madeleine DeRome +Sophie Bonnet +Carter Gibson and the entire team for all the hard work they do to make this a dynamic platform.

Four Girls In Search Of The Definition Of Love #SheInspiresMe

+nomad dimitri's video details a chance encounter with a group of students in Lisbon who wanted to spread the message of love and take a stand against domestic violence.

This initiative was created by the Google+ Create Program, g.co/PlusCreate.

International Women's Day 2017

Four young girls come up with an idea to make a difference. In the middle of the street, armed with bright eyes and wide smiles, they ask the people passing by for their definition of love. One of them is shyer than the rest: she holds the bulletin board from behind, leaving only her eyes visible.
They hand me the pen and I scribble a smiley where her hidden mouth is. They laugh, the ice is broken, the quick intimacy of well-meaning strangers is the oasis where we meet.
They want me to write my definition of love on a Post-It and stick it on the board. I shift to Greek: they are young and I know they will appreciate the exoticism of a foreign tongue. I write: "Ή αγάπη είναι το παν" ("Love is all").

They are here to raise awareness on domestic violence. My admiration for them is bittersweet: at their age, I did not even know such a thing even existed. I wish them the best and walk away, a flash of friendship in a sea of strangers on a rainy afternoon.

Madhubala - born Begum Mumtaz Jahan Dehlavi, came from a poor, conservative family based in Delhi and went on to become one of the most iconic female actors of the Indian film industry.

Due to financial crisis within the family, Madhubala turned to films at the age of 9. After starring in some films as a child artiste, Madhubala went on to work in some of Bollywood's most iconic films as the lead female actor. Some of her most popular films include Mahal, Mr & Mrs 55, Half Ticket and of course, the iconic Mughal-e-Azam, where her portrayal of a doomed courtesan earned her a nomination for Best Actress. However, in a career spanning 22 years, Madhubala never won prominent awards. Due to a prolonged illness, the actress died in the year 1969, shortly after her 36th birthday.

She is also considered to be one of the most beautiful female actors in the world, and was often compared to Marilyn Monroe. She was also offered several Hollywood projects, but they were declined due to her father's disinterest.

Growth vs. Engagement: is bigger always better?

What is better for your community? Do you want more members? More engagement? Both? The following piece by +Paul Pavlinovich of Community Vanguards explores the finer points of managing a growing Community.

Growth - Pros
Most community owners like to see their communities grow because growth brings reach, influence and a sense of defeating your own mortality in creating something that might endure and enrich people after the creator is gone.

Cons
Growth also brings work and increases the challenges of moderating that community. Work to maintain harmony among the members and work to eradicate spam and other unwanted materials in both posts and comments.

Growth can also bring something unanticipated by the owner, disaffected core members who in the beginning helped make the community vibrant, colorful and engaging. Should those core people become disaffected they can change the community in an instant either by leaving or worse by snarking. In the worst case, the latter might even lead to the closure of the community.

An example from my own experience

Normally as a community owner I like to see growth and all of my communities are own to join with stronger content controls and limited members controls turned on. I was handed custodianship of a vibrant focused art community on the plus around six months ago. Its members shared imagery they had created and were tight knit with good engagement on each others posts. In the beginning I kept it as it was with Ask to Join turned on. After a while, I became lazy and thought I’d open it up with the same controls I’d used successfully in my other communities and initially it was fine. To put it simply, my change failed. Some members stopped posting and some started to discuss their disenchantment with having blue heads. No spam had hit the community and I had policed comments deleting any rubbish. In this community it wasn’t enough.

I failed my prime duty as owner, I did not consult my core members before changing. The poison spread so far that when the original owner returned from their hiatus and I returned the community to them, they closed it and created a new one. It’s early days, but signs are good. Let’s hope the new one re attracts the original core people and is again vibrant and engaging.

Conclusion

In short, no - growth isn't always better if it means that engagement is reduced or lost entirely.

Rockets Over The Aurora

You ever see a picture that makes you think "I didn't know I needed this until now"? Simply beautiful.

Phil Eberspeaker, chief of the Sounding Rocket Program Office, said, “The ability to successfully launch these three rockets is a testament to the capabilities of the range, science and sounding rocket teams.  Great coordination is required to institute the complex countdown required to prepare and launch three rockets in a short period.  The team did a fantastic job executing these launches.”

Neutral Jet scientists at NASA's Goddard Space Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, explain that electric fields drive the ionosphere, which, in turn, are predicted to set up enhanced neutral winds within an aurora arc. This experiment seeks to understand the height-dependent processes that create localized neutral jets within the aurora.

Flying the two similar payloads simultaneously to different altitudes provided researchers unprecedented vertical measurements within an aurora. The first rocket flew to an altitude of 205 miles of above the Earth and the second flew to 118 miles.

The third rocket, flown to 227 miles altitude, was preceded by another ISINGLASS launch on Feb. 22. As with the first rocket, the payload included the deployment of a sub-payload and also several instrumented deployable canisters.  The use of these various miniature subsystems and the main payload will give researchers a multipoint view of spatial structures within the aurora.

Kristina Lynch, ISINGLASS principal investigator from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, said, “The visible light produced in the atmosphere as aurora is the last step of a chain of processes connecting the solar wind to the atmosphere.   We are seeking to understand what structure in these visible signatures can tell us about the electrodynamics of processes higher up.”

The three rockets launched were part of five launched in January through March from the Poker Flat Research Range, operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, to study auroras. The Polar Night Nitric Oxide mission, from Va. Tech in Blacksburg, flew successfully on January 27.

The five launches from Alaska are supported through NASA's Sounding Rocket Program at the agency's Wallops Flight Facility at Wallops Island, Virginia, which is managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Orbital ATK provides mission planning, engineering services and field operations for the NASA Sounding Rocket Operations Contract. NASA's Heliophysics Division manages the sounding-rocket program for the agency.

"Since I was a child, I've always felt destined to travel, help and write - to travel the world like a 'Mother Teresa', going wherever the need was great, and to help; and to write about these experiences, teaching and giving people the same experiences as if they were there. Being a highly sensitive person and being so aware of everything, experiencing all extremely with my senses, and caring so much about everything, through my writing, and the way in which I present, I aim to touch people's souls, mind and hearts. Carnaval In France #MyCarnaval

Carnaval Season...

“Carnaval” is an international festival that attracts millions of people from around the world.

The festival normally happens sometime between February and March and marks the beginning of Lent (forty-day period before Easter). It is truly a beautiful and unique festival. In fact, many people in Brazil work the entire year to put this huge festival and “party” together.
How wonderful the only thing we have to do is to enjoy.

I am sure this information is not new for some of you, and also very easy to find ~ thanks to Google -:).

What you may not know is (that in reality) a Carnaval, or some small version of Carnaval, or even a mini Carnaval happens anytime and literally anywhere during the calendar year.

The reason is very simple. Brazilians are a passionate group of people who love to have lots of fun with friends new or old. We take our traditions very seriously and most importantly with us whenever we go.

Chances are you may find some form of Carnaval in very unexpected places such as this one: Lyon, France...cold weather, wrapped in a warm coat, gloves, a scarf and a hat.

Indeed, it was quite different than a Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo or Bahia... but still very warm, special and now a lovely memory…

A Brazilian (native or by heart) can always find the sound of drums anywhere. I can’t wait to see the surprises I may get this weekend!

Happy Carnaval Season!

#mycarnaval

Note: The video is a bit dark and the camera moves a lot. Sorry, but I am sure you all can understand the reason!

Video Nasties: Exploring The Banned Films Of Yesteryear With +Nergling

The #Oscars are almost upon us, and today we're featuring one of the more interesting movie Collections G+ has to offer, Video Nasties. We spoke to the Collection owner, Alex, who is a Sci-Fi enthusiast and amateur filmmaker.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and the Sci-Fi models you create. How did you get into that?

My love of miniatures though comes from my uncle who gave me a game called 'Battlemasters' for my 8th birthday. "I am a 32yr old modeler and painter from the UK and have been into science fiction and fantasy my whole life. My love of miniatures though comes from my uncle who gave me a game called 'Battlemasters' for my 8th birthday. It was a stand alone game which had everything you needed to build two sizable armies with which to fight across a mat with a battlefield painted on it. My collection of models ranges from high fantasy, dragons, giants and knights to deep space colonies full of mutated denizens!"

You have a very interesting Film Collection called Video Nasties. Where did the idea to create this Collection come from? Have you watched any of the films? Are the tame by today’s standards or are they still “shocking?”

"Being into sci-fi and fantasy you inevitably get drawn into horror too as there is a lot of cross over between the genres (think Alien, Starship Troopers, Robocop etc.) I love a good horror movie, ever since discovering Evil Dead on late night TV (thanks Channel 5).

The idea to create the Collection came to me as I hadn't seen anything like it before on G+ Collections, there is always a large horror community on any big social media platform so I thought that people might enjoy it and I am passionate about movies. I've watched 90% of the Video Nasties, having started watching them in my late teens either on VHS or on DVD when many of them were released by VIPCO (Video Instant Picture Company). VIPCO billed itself as the leading distributor of banned movies, naturally the Video Nasties would be front and centre stage of any horror fans movie collection!

To be fair most of the Video Nasties are pretty tame by today's standards and they really only stand up to any scrutiny if you watch them with a pre-internet view of the world. The main reason any of them are still banned in the UK is the intent to shock rather than the content itself, or the fact that the distributor just hasn't bothered to approach the BBFC for a reclassification since their initial ban."

What are some Sci-Fi or Horror films that you would recommend to everyone?

"I would recommend the following movies for anyone into horror: 'Alien' (1979) and 'The Thing' (1982) as they are both a masterclass in building dread and paranoia amongst the characters. 'Evil Dead 2' (1987) and 'Braindead' (1992) by Peter Jackson (yes THAT Peter Jackson) if you want a more lighthearted yet gruesome experience.'Phantasm' (1979) which stands on its own as a quite unique horror experience. 'Kill List' (2011) a more modern film with some pretty strong content and a killer twist!"
