Bernard  has established a dynamic yet distinct style that can be seen in the top art galleries and private collections the world over – including the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Great Britain, and Kenya – among the collection of 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai. Bernard has been the subject of interest in numerous books and magazines which have featured the artist, as shown in World Art Glass Quarterly Fall 2006.  He has exhibited in the top art shows in the United States including The Smithsonian Craft Show, Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, Long’s Park Art & Craft Festival, and the Baltimore American Craft Council Show. Every aspect in the work, from raw materials to the finishing details, are made by hand. With this in mind, the investment is given to the artistic statement and each piece they create is a unique work of art.  Learn how the process works starting from a clay model to the finished product. Meet Bernard and Katie, LIVE in their studio... sharing the process and their work environment.   We will have an International Panel who will be sharing valuable input.   Please post any questions you might have of an artist in glass sculptor. Hey everyone.  Just a reminder that voting is now open on the Shades of Gray contest that I'm judging over at ViewBug.  Some really fantastic images.  Go vote and go find a contest that interests you.  They have some great prizes and a contest for just about any photographer and, as you know, everyone IS a photographer.

It's now more than two weeks since Google Plus unveiled the new interface design.  Are you using the new design or are you holding on to the "Classic" design.

Best regards Dominique and happy holidays to you and yours.

Stay warm

PLEASE VIEW IT LARGE

Snowflakes swirl down gently in the deep blue haze beyond the window. The outside world is a dream.
Inside, the fireplace is brightly lit, and the Yule log crackles with orange and crimson sparks.
There’s a steaming mug in your hands, warming your fingers.
There’s a friend seated across from you in the cozy chair, warming your heart.
There is mystery unfolding.

I adore you, I do. I took a test drive on your mobilesque desktop G+ and sadly you broke my heart. I have been here since the first couple days of Beta. The first Beta. I loved you at first sight. And don’t get me wrong, I still do. Otherwise I wouldn’t have taken the time to write all of this. And yes, I’m also sending the official feedback. But the official feedback doesn’t cover the overall impressions. I can’t highlight missing features. I can’t hide personal data because you’ve already removed that.

When you first said you listened to us and are focusing on interests. I was happy. Google + is where I go to find people with common interests and passions. But you left out one very important thing. The PEOPLE. Everything social has been removed from the new G+. Hangouts/Chat. Gone. About Me. Gone. Circles have been stripped down to uselessness. I have 39 circles, but I’m only allowed to view 6!? Do you know why I have so many? Part is I have people sorted by things they post about. One is for people who post things not always safe for work. (I don’t mind that they do, I just need to me sensitive to my surroundings). One is for shushed people. These are the people I adore what they post, but not what they plus. I have to segregate them because you don’t allow me to shut off seeing what they plus. I also have a circle for folks who I allow to see my contact info. My local peoples. People I’ve met in real life. That is a large circle. I’ve met, done hangouts with some amazing, inspirational, talented, kind people in the last several years. But I feel like you’ve taken them from me. It’s no longer easy to send someone a quick Chat message. (And yes I still call it Chat when it’s only text). When someone new circles me, not only do I have to click to see their info, it’s a stripped down version of it. Cold. Impersonal. There are some great About Me’s that will never be seen again. Take a look at Shawn McClure’s. It’s awesome. But it’s nowhere to be found on the new version. Only the 239,042,382 links ;-) See this album https://goo.gl/photos/Aq2dTGnkUQFVsPLV9 ? It’s full of the folks I’ve met here on G+. I've been to your house!! There’s a photo of a couple I met in my very first hangout. The live half a world away, but when they came to vacation near me we met up in person. It was awesome. But I can’t even send you the link via G+ anymore. Just the horrible horrible Photos. Where they sit lonely because no one can comment, plus or anything. Just stare. I can’t look at someone’s profile to see their photos anymore either. To be honest unless they’ve been keeping up on hiding junk from highlights I haven’t been able to in a long time. I don’t care what events they’ve gone too – when I click on their (or my) photos tab I want to see the photos by that person. That’s it. Period. No more.

Now let’s talk about the UI. Is it a great redesign? I don’t know. To be honest it looks like a cross between Classic G+ and my cell phone. I get that nothing will necessarily be where I expect it, that there will be a learning curve. Like finding circles. I sincerely hope you make them more functional again. And more accessible. I get that you’re trying to blend mobile and desktop. But why? Most people I know use them in very different ways. And if it’s at a cost of removing features most people love and use daily, maybe it’s not a wise move. Everywhere I want to go, every comment I want to make, ever plus I want to press takes more steps now. Many more steps in some cases. An update or two ago a friend joked that you were in cahoots with mouse manufacturers trying to get us to wear out our mice faster. I’m starting to believe that’s true. What ever happened to elegant design? And the layout. Images are SO tiny. I have a big monitor, even so I have to zoom in my browser to 175%. And even then images and posts don’t fill the screen. While I like the stream having room to breathe, it doesn’t need half my screen’s width to do so. And speaking of filling up space why can’t I zoom in on photos anymore? And why on earth did you put the Delete button where the Close button use to be in the Lightbox view? I’ve nearly deleted my photo several times now. Why move the close button to the other side? It was happy where it was. It told me so.

What happened to the hover pop ups? Is that going away to mobile-ify the UI? I loved being able to hover over someone’s name and the circles I have them in would show up. Made it easy to rearrange. Or remember why I circled them in the first place. I could hover over someone’s name on a comment and see if I had them circled and the quick tagline about them. Gone. Now I have to click on the name, lose the conversation I was in just to see if I have them circled or to circle them. I can’t tell if they have me circled or not.

I do understand why you broke out some of the features – such as hangouts and Photos. I get that many people use them or want to use them without having a G+ account. But why remove all links to them from G+? I know how to do that on my Wordpress site- it’s easy!! Can’t you simply add a tab/button whatever that opens them up like in G+? Who wants to keep jumping from tab to tab when browsing and chatting with someone? How many missed conversations will there be because we forget to open the Hangouts app? Again – it’s the PEOPLE that keep bringing me here.

Communities. Come on. Why hide some of the most useful features in Communities? Why make the categories a drop down menu? (Again that mouse conspiracy theory rears it’s head). Just show them to me! It’s hard enough to get folks to read community rules when it’s right there in front of them. If they have to click to find it, forget it. Again. Classic Google I could simply over the category and a handy pop up menu would show up and let me move a post. Easy peasy. New one I have to click then select. Then when I’m done with one community, I have to go click on the Hamburger button. Click on Communities. Possibly tab between the ones where I’m a member or moderator (another thing that used to be on one handy screen). Then scroll and scroll and scroll to find and click again on the Community I want to view. I can’t simply click on All Communities at the top of well all my communities anymore. And no longer to I get the most commonly used communities at the top. I’m considering adding an AAAAAAAA to the name of all of the Communities I own ;)

You said you talked to users. You said you visited us in our homes. You said you listened. Honestly Adobe said the same thing about the latest Lightroom and that was a huge disaster. I hope you learned a bit from them and that’s why you’re releasing this test version. Because your biggest fans, your biggest supporters are your existing users. We LOVE G+. That’s why my stream is filled with upset people. We feel like you’ve taken our friends away from us. Remember if we didn’t like you so much we would simply leave. But we want to make G+ a success every bit as much as you do. We joined because G+ was different. It was filled with genuine people. Passionate people. Friendly people. Intelligent people. Please remember that. I'm glad you listened when people said G+ was the place for interests. It is, but more importantly it's about people with common interests.

And last but not least I have been and will continue to send feedback on specific problems. As often as I can :) ___

If you don't like what Google has done to G+ send them a message by making this post go global instead of sharing a finger with them, as I did yesterday.  Let them know how you feel.

I took a pot shot at Google this morning over their redesign so why not take a shot at Canon, Nikon, and drones.

This morning I received the new ad from B&H.  They're promoting Canon MK III packages and high-end Drones.  I think to myself,"No more Canons for me, I need a smaller, lighter mirror-less Fuji."  For the drones, I think, "Nope, will wait for a few years to see if it's still legal to fly the dang things." I think Canon and Nikon have missed the boat the way Microsoft has missed the boat in mobile computing. The tide is running against them and they don't seem to be reacting to the sea change.

A day doesn't go by that one of my pro or amateur friends doesn't say. "Sold my Canon / Nikon Gear. Used the money to buy a Fuji  / Sony"    Last year I thought my next camera would be a Canon 5D MKIV. Now, I'm prettysure i... mehr »

I have just one thing to say. the new Google Plus is the worse change they've made in 4 years. I absolutely hate the change in focus and I despise the animated text on all my posts. It's enough to make me reconsider FaceBook.

I'm not sure that the people that have designed Google Plus even use it.  They have made communities smoother but taken away a lot of organizational features that community managers use a lot. In particular, the info block is well hidden it might as well be gone.  Nearly every community that I know of makes extensive use of the info block to provide links and information about the community.  The animated text is annoying at best and downright distracting at worse. It's like have a page full of animated gifs of squirming worms

Every UI designer seems to think that everything has to run on a 6" screen and work with the swipe of a finger. Well, I'm here to tell you which finger I'm going to use +Google+  ___

Half Dome on the Merced
Yosemite National Park
October 24, 2015

Half Dome in Yosemite is an icon, it is unmistakable, and you can't help but look for ways to photograph it while in the park.  On our second day in the park I was determined to get a good image of Half Dome reflected in the Merced River.  Water levels were very low, so my desire for this image was met with frustration trying to find a suitable location.  But after some wandering we found this little bend on the Merced near the Lodge and we had our shot.  I decided to go for a Long Exposure, since there were just some whispy clouds around Half Dome.  I was very happy with the resulting effect the LE had on the image.  One image that encompassed most of my favorite photographic elements, A strong subject, landscape, black and white and long exposure...yep, I was a happy photog that day.

The Mechanic's Spiral
The Mechanics Institute Library, San Francisco, USA
On my site: https://goo.gl/1kLYIt

This is the staircase in the Mechanic's Institute Library in the SOMA (South of Market Area) of San Francisco. I had found it using the stuck on earth app and a curated list from Thomas Hawk of places to see in the city. My fellow master in the Arcanum +Wes Hardaker and my wife Danielle, and I all went to check it out. Thankfully when we arrived the doorman was away from his post, which gave us the chance to waltz right in and have a look around. We climbed up to the top and took some pictures from a bunch of different angles and levels, until eventually we were spotted by the doorman himself! What followed was the most gentle and polite scolding I have ever received haha. He was very kind and just made sure that 1) we hadn't taken any pictures of people, and 2) that we knew this was a private building - that second part accompanied by the knowing look he gave us made it clear that it would be a good time to head down the stairs and towards the door. Anyway before moving on a took a last couple frames from the bottom looking up (including this one here) and several of them turned out to be my favorites. I am glad that I risked overstaying my not-so-welcome to get those last few shots.

This morning it was all gray and foggy so I thought I'd go to Bellevue and take some pictures of the building shrouded in fog. By the time I got there, the fog was all gone. But, I'm happy that the fog had lifted because I think this is a fine addition to my Bellevue Rising series.

BTW: I'm now a Master of Photography in the Arcanum. If you'd like to learn how to do this and a whole lot more, please consider joining my mentorship group (cohort) by adding the following text your profile in the Arcanum; www.theArcanum.com

One of my fellow Masters of Photography in the Arcanum, +Wes Hardaker shared this image earlier today.  Super image. Wish I had been there in San Francisco.  He seems to think that this bridge has color, Surely he's living in the wrong world. [wink]

From this point forward, I exist alone
San Francisco, CA, US

I know what you're thinking.  You're muttering to yourself "did he just post a black and white image of what might be the world's most famous colored bridge?".  Yes.  Yes, I did.

Another wonderful image by my friend +Bill Wood that I'm adding to my Black and White Fine Art Photography Collection.

Monochrome version of last post.  I love the drama of the black and white.  Processed in Silver Effects Pro 4.

Here's a terrific image form one of the people taking part in my 256 Shades of Gray™ private learning community.  Steve is not only an active photographer in the community but he is a moderator.

Thought I'd share his work via my Black and White Fine Art Photography collection.

Taken on a river cruise.

As this is my first post here, let me also take a moment to say hello. I've been a member of another BW group called 256SOG moderated by +Charles Lupica and have been privileged to be a moderator there this year.  That group has also benefited from +Joel Tjintjelaar's advice and resources.

I look forward to seeing the contributions of others and, of course, adding my own. I'll probably be a frequent visitor to the critiques section, both as a commenter and as a submitter.  I firmly believe we can all learn from each other. ___Here's a terrific image form one of the people taking part in my 256 Shades of Gray™ private learning community.  Steve is not only an active photographer in the community but he is a moderator.

Fine Art comes in many flavors. Here's an image from +Ellie Kennard that just speaks to me. [ no pun intended but it works ]

This is Stuart. He can hear Sound
Week 18/26: Sound #BWProject26 .

We first met Stuart almost 18 years ago. He is a wood turner and he was standing smiling in his booth at a craft show. His wife stepped up at once and explained that Stuart was deaf, so she showed us his work as he looked on, smiling at us and doing his best to chat. Stuart had not been born deaf but had worked as a pile driver for many years and the vibration and loud sounds had gradually eroded his hearing. His wife explained to me that when deafness is caused by noise levels, a hearing aid is not good, because it increases the sound level, which then continues to cause even more hearing loss.

We saw Stuart a few times over the years and he always remained apparently accepting of his condition, smiling when we complimented him on his work and talking about it animatedly. I since found out that he had to put up a fight to get his hearing loss accepted as being work related so that he could receive a disability pension, but he never let on to us about his discouragements or concerns, continuing to turn and produce the things he loved to make.

A few years ago, Stuart had a cochlear implant and, he was able to hear for the first time in years. It was at first a bit strange to be able to speak to him in a more or less normal voice and have him respond, but everyone was so happy for him that this treatment had helped him to hear again. At last we were able to really get to know him properly.

We were all at the annual Nova Woodturners Guild BBQ the other day, when I saw Stuart sitting there listening to the conversation with a little smile on his face in response to what was being said. Those of us with no experience of such impairment can have no idea of the pleasure he must get when he can sit and listen to a conversation going on around him again.

So Stuart is my model for 'Sound', the theme for this project this week.

This is the "famous" Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River just outside of Page Arizona. The viewing area is about 1000 feet above the river. The "normal" view of this this is usually clipped but I wanted to show the wider view to give a sense of all the people visiting the edge of the canyon to have a look at Horseshoe Bend. The hike from the parking lot is about .7 miles (about 1.2 km). The temperature, on this day, was around 103° Fahrenheit (36° C). Rather toasty. The relatively short walk felt like a long way from the air conditioned car. If you look closely you might see a small white spot on the river on the right, this is a boat with about 6 or 8 people in it. The scale here can only be described as massive.

Stitched in Photoshop and processed in +Nik Collection by Google (CEP4 and SEP2).

Well, for the time being I've given up looking for a used Canon 5D Mark II.  I had bough one but the base was warped from mistreatment. Luckily, I was able to return it to the store where I bought it.  Instead, I bought a new 7D Mark II for my wife and a new Canon EFS 10mm-18mm macro zoom to go with it.  I got her hand me down, a Canon 7D. It's not nearly as cool as the 7D Mark II and not as versatile as my, now officially dead, Canon 5D Mark II.  I thought about buying a Canon 5D Mark III but it's lack of GPS and wi-fi made it less than compelling.  I think I'll wait to see what the Canon 5D mark IV has to offer. [ Rumored to be in the works for 2016 ]

With the new lens, I have a comparable field of view to my old 5D Mark II with the 16mm-35mm attached.

Ko-Kwal-Alwoot, Samish Indian statue of the Maiden of Deception Pass. Samish Indian mythology speaks of a maiden long ago who wed a sea spirit in order to save her people from starvation. It seems he rather liked her and threatened to take away the abundant sea life in the area if she refused to marry him. The other day I shared a monochrome image of Mt Rainier. Here's a blue hour image taken the night before.

This is a 3 minute and 30 second long exposure image of Mt Rainier, taken from the road above the lake. [ The other picture was taken at the lake side. ]

Since +Kari Johnson likes color, this is for you. :-)

Hey, if you're like me, you're still struggling to really understand how and when to use collections, aargh. It's so confusing and so much trouble that you have to wonder who designed it - must have been an engineer because it couldn't possible have been a UI designer.

This weekend I went camping on the flanks of Mt Rainier. It was a cool place to go on the hottest weekend so far this year (dual meaning intended - lol).

This was taken around 9:00 am on the banks of Tipsoo Lake. I used a 10 stop Neutral Density filter with a very small aperture [ f/22 to get plenty of depth of filed and to reduce the light so that I could get a full 30 seconds of exposure ].  I was fairly low, about 1 meter high.  I wanted to be low enough to capture a complete reflection but still get the horizon close to lower "power line" of the "rule of thirds".  The sky was ari... mehr »

The sky was a rich blue; which really helps when you do the conversion to Black and White.  By adding a red filter in Silverver Effects Pro 2, the blue translates to a rich gray grading to black at the top.

When I first processed this in Color Efex Pro 4 #CEP4 , I was sure I would need to share this in color. But when I converted it to B&W I knew this was meant to be shared as a Fine Art Monochrome.

The choice between color and B&W is always a difficult choice. I was pondering this I was swinging back and forth in a hammock looks up at the dappled sunlight in the pine boughs above me. I had an epiphany as I swayed gently under the trees. No matter how dedicated you are to doing Black and White Fine Art Photography you have to feel it.  A scene has to speak to you as an artist.  It has to say, this is it. My Intent from the start was to convert this to Black and White.  I knew the rich blue sky would translate to a rich gray grading to black. But until you do the conversion, you can't be sure the magic is there.

Last week I shared a Black and White image of the Palouse region of western Washington. Today I thought I'd share a color image taken from Steptoe Butte looking north.

It seems that whenever I have something to say about Google Plus I end up losing a lot of followers. Invariably it seems that I get dropped from whatever G+ promotional list I was on. Since I already seem to be in the doghouse with Google Plus I might as well take a swipe at them anyway.

Once again, for no reason other than change, Google seems to have completely revamped how we upload and share photos. If I didn't have so much time and energy invested in Google Plus I think I'd just stop using G+. Churn, churn, churn.

I hate change. I wish it were all a bit more evolutionary and less radical change. I could deal a lot better with a slowly changing system but I hate these big changes in paradigm.

I hate change. I wish it were all a bit more evolutionary and less radical change. I could deal a lot better with a slowly changing system but I hate these big changes in paradigm.

I guess I'm just an old curmudgeon but I don't need some universal platform to spam the world from. All I really want is a decent place to share my art and my technique. With this new photography features I now have to choose to share to G+, aargh. I no longer have folders. I now must put everything into a "collection". I have a few things I'd like the program managers at Google to collect.

I suppose this rant is only slightly colored by the fact that this image is the very last image my Canon 5D Mark II is likely to take, ever. The on / off switch broke and Canon won't fix it unless they fix everything imaginable at the same time. I'm told they won't do a "partial" repair. They'll only return it to factory specs. They want $1300 to do that. It looks like I'll have to see if one of the local, non Canon shops can fix it. If not, it might be time for some Camera DIY.

aargh.

Oh well, I'm glad that May is almost over. I hope June brings better skies.
.

I was out in western Washington photographing the Palouse region.  The Palouse is known for its incredible rolling hills, usually in shades of green and brown. So the challenge, as is often the case for me, was to capture the Palouse and bring the richness of the landscape to a Black and White print. This image was taken from Steptoe Butte in the late afternoon. ___

Here's a wonderful B&W image from +Tom Hierl

Tree and Whale Bones, Point Lobos,State Preserve, Carmel, California

We spent an afternoon at Point Lobos during the workshop I took last week.At Whaler's Cove, they have an exhibit about whaling history. I liked the way the whale bones complimented the shape of the tree for this shot.
