Lotus Carroll1,777,664This is the Event for our September 2013 Self Portrait Challenge: A Great Cell Phone Photo. Just because you use a cell phone doesn't mean your self portrait has to be of the "facebook style" mobile or reflection variety. That little guy has a camera inside it, so treat it like one! Here is where you enter your ONE Self Portrait using only a cell phone to capture and process (no computer software post processing!). Your photo must have been captured this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST September 30th, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tutorial & Tips* Need some tips and inspiration for this challenge? Have no fear! That's why we're here. :) The amazing @110573952887886961621 made a tutorial about shooting cell phone photos to get you inspired - see it here: http://goo.gl/z3IZ23 He also posted a video of his process - see it here: http://goo.gl/vzcRHL *Remember these Do's and Don'ts to get the best photo:* *DO take the time to set up your shot thoughtfully. *DO invest time and effort and try more than once to get it right. *DO make sure your lens is clean. *DO take your photo in adequate light so it's not grainy, blurry, or dark. *DO put the cell phone down and use a timer - stop taking all your photos by holding the phone and pointing at yourself or a mirror. *DO try different angles for the best composition. *DO read the posts in our Tutorials Category and try the concepts and ideas you learn from them: http://goo.gl/uSUULE  *DO try different apps and see what works best for you. *DO be aware of your background! It makes a huge difference! Is there junk in the room behind you? If yes, it's not a good place to shoot. ETC. *DO NOT just slap a filter or cheesy effect on and call it a day - take the time to try different edits and pay attention to the elements of your photo.  *DO NOT point your phone at a mirror and take a reflection photo where we can see your phone. *DO NOT have your arms in the photo as you're holding the phone out in front of or above you. *DO NOT duckface. *DO NOT showcase your cleavage as the main subject. *Here's a list of Photo Apps you can try out:* Snapseed VSCOcam Retouch (cloning tool!) Bodie Island Lighthouse
Outer Banks of North Carolina

Located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, this is the third lighthouse to be constructed in the Bodie Island area.  The first lighthouse built in 1847, was poorly constructed and was replaced in 1859.  The second lighthouse was short lived also and was blown up by Confederate troops in 1861. The coast remained dark until 1872 when the current lighthouse with it's powerful first-order Fresnel lens was turned on.

This image was taken about 20 years ago on film with either a Minolta X-700 or a Nikon N90 .  It was later scanned with an Epson V700 scanner.

Cape Florida Lighthouse
Key Biscayne, Florida

The 95 foot white brick lighthouse, built in 1855-1856, has a spiral staircase with 119 steps to the top.  The current structure replaced the original 1825 lighthouse  that was attacked and burned by Seminole Indians protesting the United States presence in the South Florida wilderness.  The U.S. was trying at that time to move the Indians from Florida to the West.

The Local Service Station
Havana, Cuba - 2012

Seeing this place took me back to the 1950's when I used to go to the local service station with my Father.  It reminds me of the place we used to regularly get gas.  It was out towards Cotorro, one of the suburbs of Havana.

Celebration of Life
When the Iris Bloom

One of my favorite times of the year is when the Iris begin to bloom.
31 years ago, my mother-in-law went to her mother's home and dug up some Iris bulbs to plant in our brand new yard.  Most years they do pretty well, but some years we have  a fantastic season.   My Mother-in-Law is no longer with us, but each year when the Iris bloom, they are a special memory of her and a Celebration of Life.

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse
Jupiter, Florida

The Jupiter Inlet lighthouse was built in 1860 on a hill once thought to be an Indian shell mound or midden (and sometimes falsely rumored to be a burial mound), but which is now determined to be a natural parabolic sand dune. The top of the 105-foot tower is 153 feet above sea level. The light can be seen 24 nautical miles at sea. The lighthouse is lighted by a first-order Fresnel lens.  The tower was first painted red in 1910.

Sturgeon Point Lighthouse
On Lake Huron in Haynes Township, Alcona County, Michigan

In 1857 a lighthouse was built near the entrance to Saginaw Bay on Tawas Point and in 1832 one was erected on Thunder Bay Island.  To fill the gap between these two lights,  congress appropriated money for a light at Sturgeon Point.

The light, opened in 1869, stands 71 feet tall and has a third-and-a-half order Fresnel lens.

The original octagonal stone tower was deeded in 1930 to Preservation Virginia who maintains the lighthouse which can still be visited and climbed today.

The New Cape Henry Lighthouse is adorned with one of the most distinctive daymarks to be found on a lighthouse anywhere in the world. Its stark octagonal tower alternates between white and black on its various faces, and midway up this pattern is offset by one face, producing a checkerboard-like effect. The unique coloring distinguishes Cape Henry from the all-white tower of Cape Charles to the north and the redbrick tower at Currituck Beach to the south.  The first-order lens was tested on November 27 and “found to work admirably.” Freshly painted, the lighthouse was officially turned over to Keeper Jay Edwards on December 15, 1881 and placed in operation that evening with its light shining at a focal plane of 157 feet and visible for up to 18 ¾ miles. It was automated by the Coast Guard in 1984 and is still maintained today.

Key West Lighthouse
Seen from the Earnest Hemingway House
Key West, Florida

Earnest Hemingway arrived in Key West by ferry from Havana in 1928.  He was supposed t pick up a new car that was to be waiting for for him, but found out that the car was delayed.  While waiting for the car to be delivered, he fell in love with the area and moved into a Spanish colonial villa at 907 Whitehead Street.  He stayed there for more than 10 years and wrote many of his best works.  The Key West Lighthouse is seen looking across the garden from the porch of his house.

Bass Harbor Head Light
Bass Harbor, Maine

If I was going to Maine to shoot lighthouses today, I would research the web to find all the great vantage points from which to shoot the various lighthouses that I was going to visit.  Back in 1998 when I took this shot, I was traveling with my wife and two teenage kids we were just winging it.  I missed getting getting a shot from down below shooting up showing the lighthouse sitting on the edge of the cliff.  I did get this shot that I have always kind of liked, as well as some other somewhat boring shots.

Located in Acadia National Park, it marks the entrance to Bass Harbor on the southwestern side of Mount Desert Island.  The lighthouse was built in 1858 and stands 56 feet about the water at high tide.

Taken on film with a Nikon N90 and scanned from film on an Epson V700 scanner

Bodie Island Lighthouse

Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse - West Tower
Cape Elizabeth, Maine

In the summer of 1998, my daughter had just graduated from High School and I had just turned 50 years old.  To celebrate these two events, my family made a trip to Maine.  Photographing lighthouses was high on my list of things to do.  This photo was taken on film using a Nikon N90.  The negative was scanned a few years ago with an Epson V700 Scanner.

In1827 it was decided that Cape Elizabeth needed a navigational aid.  So that the light would not be confused with Portland Head or Wood Island, the decision was made to construct twin lighthouses.  The east tower would have a fixed light and the west tower would have a revolving light.  By 1855 the west light was turned off and the east light was fitted with an occulting third-order lens.  Both lighthouse still stand.  This photo is what is known as theCape Eli... mehr »

Caballero de Paris
Old Havana  - La Habana Vieja

Jose Maria Lopez Lledin, affectionately known as the “Caballero de Paris” still haunts the old Havana city streets that were his home.  Nobody knows if he was a Vagabond, Intellectual, Artist, or Philosopher, but his bronze statue outside the San Francisco de Assisi church in the old colonial city and has become something of a tourist attraction and a delight to tourist.  Truely one of the legendary characters fo Old Havana.

7 Foot Knoll Lighthouse
Baltimore, Maryland

Maryland’s first two lighthouses were built to mark the confluence of Chesapeake Bay and the Patapsco River, which led upstream to the important port of Baltimore. Bodkin Island Lighthouse, constructed in 1822, was placed at the southern side of the river entrance, and North Point Lighthouse was erected at the northern side of the entrance in 1824.

One of the countries earliest screwpile lighthouse, Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse was  erected on Seven Foot Knoll in the mouth of the Patapsco River to replace Bodkin Island Lighthouse.

When completed in 1855, Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse consisted of a one-story, circular, iron dwelling, with a diameter of forty feet, which rested atop nine iron screwpiles, a central pile and eight others placed at the angles of an octagon.

A fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed in the lighthouse’s circular lantern room to produce a fixed white light at a focal plane of forty-four feet above the water, and a 500-pound fog bell was struck by machinery during times of limited visibility.

The lighthouse was in manned operation for 133 years.  In 1948 the lighthouse was automated.  The lack of a resident keeper was not good news for Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse, as it began to quickly deteriorate and led the Coast Guard to declare it excess property in 1969. The lighthouse was donated to the Mariners Museum in Newport News, but a year later, the contractor hired to maintain the structure went bankrupt, and the museum gave up its claims to the lighthouse in 1975.

The lighthouse was saved when in 1988 the City of Baltimore moved the lighthouse to Pier 5 as part of a redevelopment plan for the harbor.
