Stephanie Sims2,790*Pooling Our Knowledge: Entrepreneurs’ Community Hangout* *Monday, May 12 2014* *1:00 pm Pacific (4:00 pm Eastern, 3:00 pm Central, and 2:00 pm Mountain)*   We’re excited to start this HOA series specifically for the Entrepreneurs’ Community, entitled “Pooling Our Knowledge”. Each week, a community member (or two!) will speak on their area of expertise, and give you some tips to improve your business in that specific area.   Of course, we’ll take all the questions from the audience that we have time for during the show, and do our best to respond to those we can’t answer on-air afterwards.   Not only will you get some helpful tips, but you’ll have the opportunity to meet other entrepreneurs who may be struggling with the same issues that you are!   This week’s topic is *“Setting Your Business up for Financial Success”.* We’ll be covering some of the essential tools you need to manage your finances, including financial projections and financial reporting (and NO, they aren’t the same thing!). If you have any questions, please leave them on the event page! This week’s hosts are: @100507762856957104832    Judi is the founder of GrowthCast. She helps small businesses see their financial future. Judi and GrowthCast are on a mission to demystify business financials and allow any business owner to understand the health of their business. @104267556228949747305  Stephanie gives owners a new way to measure the value of their business, using a method called Finance-Ability. She wants owners to understand the value of their company before they get involved in any financial decisions, so they are dealing from a position of strength. Knowing your worth is always a good thing - in life and in business!   We look forward to seeing you for the first of many community hangouts!   #PoolingOurKnowledge #EntrepreneursCommunityHOA  POOLING OUR KNOWLEDGE - Entrepreneurs' Community Hangout2014-05-12 22:00:0033

LinkedIn / Profinder Platform. Just curious, has anyone in this community tried this yet - or do you plan to? Do you think it will help your business - or hurt it? What do you think this means for the industry as a whole?

Linkedin has launched a new competitor to Upwork - one of those quasi-monopolies like Uber but for freelance workers - a merger of the old oDesk and eLance platforms. To tell you the truth, I am not all that excited about this competition - it seems like more of a "race to the bottom" and an attempt to commoditize what we do. I am also not big on the idea of Linkedin / Microsoft "screening" me by their corporate standards. Most of the promotion on the so far has been to corporations who may buy this service, but this is the first article that describes it from the other side.___LinkedIn / Profinder Platform. It's probably a decent app, but jeez dudes - what ever happened to "more wood behind fewer arrows"? It is not hard to envision a really killer app with Hangouts that gives us everything we need instead of fragmenting everything. As has been said about Google. "they build product to solve their own problems, not ours".

Somewhere I have a half written blog post with the title "Google Communities is Broken: Here's how to fix them"". I recommended that Google bring Hangouts back to Google Communities - but integrate. them properly this time, because together they would be perfect for "community building". Google will never do that though - they just move on to the next shiny object, and eventually let their other products gradually fail.

Does anyone have any discussion questions?. Lots of people like to give "advice" here - and in fact on most business forums. My Twitter feed in particular is filled with "advice" and come to think of it so is my Linkedin feed. I guess giving advice is supposed to make everyone think you are smart - and if it is really good advice, I suppose that is true, but I do wonder sometimes if we have reached "peak advice".

Because this community - and all public communities on Google+ are also plagued with "link dumping" we set up a new category here for discussion questions with no links. Everyone here thinks they have to include a link with every post, but we actually LOVE posts with no links. I am sure at least some of you have questions you would like opinions on - feel free to post those here.

In other categories, members can still post links as long as you really think it is good and give a decent summary, and you can occasionally post your own material as long as you disclose that and, as the guidelines say, do it rarely.

At the moment though, I don't see a single discussion question that has been posted in the last few weeks, so feel free to post well formulated questions.

OK - I am definitely getting posts in my screem from people I don't follow, and it seems to be happening repeatedly. These posts are public - not shared privately , and there are no indications that they have been recommended or given a +1 by someone I know.

I first noticed these when I started getting some really racist posts in my stream and needed to check if I had somehow accidentally followed these people - I hadn't. I don't know how often this happens but I tend to notice them more when I see posts with politics very different than my own. As an example I get posts from R Michael Brown who I don't follow. His posts are not extreme, but it's a point of view that doesn't interest me and I don't want it in my stream.

Why am I getting so much racist garbage and other trash in my stream now? I just blocked one guy named "Raul" who posts bigoted rants about Muslims and Obama. As soon as I did that another appeared with a screen name of "Mother Fucker" - how is that even allowed? I don't follow these people, how are they even getting in my stream? These are showing as "shared publicly" not "shared privately*.

What are your favorite smart phone apps for business?

I'm rather late to the smart phone universe - until a few months ago I always had some combination of a crappy phone or a crappy service. I have recently upgraded to Google's Project Fi and got a Nexus 5 - far from the best smart phone, but at least it has all the basics. I have also "cord cutted" - common for younger folks but not so much for older adults. This means I no longer have an "always on" internet connection at home and instead use "tethering" and a portable WiFi hotspot. It works better than expected, but since I am paying for data I now avoid high bandwidth activities - like watching video online.

In a way, this has turned out to be a blessing in disguise, and I think I am using the internet far more efficiently now, and I have also developed a love for applications that "sync" and give both good smart phone, and good desktop functionality. Since I am fairly new to this, I know there must be a ton of good apps I have never even heard of, so it would be interesting to know what others here use and like. Here are a few I use for business.

Evernote. I use it for "daily log" entries - like a journal, but on the phone I use the voice recognition to record what I am doing or thinking, and a "task capture" file to record things I should do. Evernote is, of course, great at syncing, so I also use the keyboard for these things. I also use a paid app called "web page clipper" to save entire articles to Evernote when I read them online.

Asana. I use this task planning tool extensively on desktop, and they recently added offline syncing to their smart phone app - it has been getting better with each release.

Greader. I just found this last week, and I LOVE it. I am a big reader of business and other articles, and have been using Feedly since the old Google Reader was discontinued. This syncs with the Feedly cloud, but also downloads all the articles. This was actually a big data expense for me, but now I can just whiz by some hotspot and in a few minutes download a whole day of reading material - like a newspaper boy in reverse.

Copy Contact. Just a small paid app but useful. I try to use Google Contacts as a CRM of sorts, but it has never been easy to move a contact from one account to another. I also use "Contact Editor Pro" to give more complete contact editing capabilities.

What about you- what are your favorite smart phone apps for business? I would also be interested in learning what activities you like dong on your smart phone, and what you prefer to do on your desktop machine, and how you balance or coordinate these activities.___

Kind of defeats the purpose of having a password manager doesn't it?

This isn't the first LastPass breech and it's unlikely to be the last. Which is why I don't keep my passwords with a cloud manager. It a very real way, it ironically increases your risk.___Kind of defeats the purpose of having a password manager doesn't it?

To be fair, I once went to a "Wedding Dress Burning" party on the beach to celebrate a friend's recent divorce. We nailed some two by fours together and draped the dress over them and had a little ceremony while we carried it down to the fire rings on the beach. Then we doused the whole thing in lighter fluid and after a countdown set it on fire.

The dress burned away immediately, the wood - in this shape of a cross, did not. We were inadvertently having a highly visible cross burning on a public beach!

There was one black guy in our group had he thought it was hilarious, but we were horrified. I remember seeing people on the boardwalk not far from us with their mouths agape. After a few minutes, someone in our group kicked it over, but not before many, many people had seen it.

Good read - users of Google's new technologies should use extreme caution before investing too heavily- there's a better than even chance Google will simply dump them later.

Google, in its wisdom, has apparently decided it's better to have a bunch of mediocre products with functionality spread out among different apps, rather than a few good products. The only explanation that makes sense to me is that Google wants to give its various product teams something interesting to do. They no longer seem to operate with their customers in mind.
