Mike Runyon28,913While I realize a lot of people have to work on President's Day, it is worth while asking for the day off. The traffic is considerably less and the crowds are diminished, making for far more photo opportunities. All those who can attend can meet just inside the main gate as there's a large area to gather and then proceed on through the event. There is a lot to see and do, as well as some great food to go with! There are numerous shows and great displays and has been quite the fun time all the years I've attended. You can buy tickets at the main entrance or you can usually pick up discount tickets at Fry's groceries. http://royalfaires.com/arizona/ Even though you may not be able to attend, please share this with any and all you think might be interested in the event!Arizona Renaissance Festival President's Day Photowalk2013-02-18 18:00:0020

russ vallelunga29,299Sycamore is the second largest canyon in the Red Rock District of Coconino National Forest (the first being Oak Creek), but is lesser known, and less traveled.  It's also more pristine, less populated by 'venturers', and friendlier to unspoiled~nature photographic scenes.  A riparian habitat in the desert, the subjects to photograph range from macro to landscape.  30 minutes out of Cottonwood, Az, a light decent of 200 feet leads to a level, sandy hiking trail   I'm staging a 'hiking' photowalk here, September 16th (alternate date, Sept. 30th if the 16th turns out to be unsuitable due to weather).   This is wilderness habitat.  The trail is mostly sandy and smooth, but sturdy shoes are needed. Bring at least 2 quarts of water per person (or purification tablets for the natural springwater); pack a non-perishable lunch, plus snacks.  There are *no* toilet facilities in the wilderness. I will bring a light shovel and a couple rolls of TP; we shall be considerate in covering any natural wastes and elsewise packing out what we pack in.  Animal subjects may include Golden eagles, mountain lions, bobcats, badgers, great blue herons, and black bears (most are elusive, but it could happen) and certainly smaller birds, squirrels, rabbits, and reptiles.  Natural subjects include miniwaterfalls, sandy waterways with moss and fungi, and water pools bathed in red-rock reflections.   Flora subjects include cottonwood, sycamore, and Arizona walnut trees, & a variety of wildflowers, vines, moss and fungi.  The photowalk will end about 2 miles in, at a pool of water about the size of an Olympic sized pool, surrounded by rocks of many colors. You're invited to camp out overnight at the trailhead for an early start/meet & greet  (campfires may be prohibited--bring a camping stove, or cooler for chilled foods).  There's no moon on the 16th, so I will offer assistance in astro-photography if desired.   Morning travelers to the event should use a travel site such as googlemaps or mapquest to determine at what time in the wee-hours of the morning they will need to leave from their location to arrive by 7:30am, then leave 1/2 hour earlier (just to be sure).  Those arriving late are welcomed to follow down the well-marked trail to catch up with the group.  Photowalk: Parson's Trail, Sycamore Canyon, Az2012-09-16 16:00:0011

1st Lightning Shot
This was the first lightning shot I ever took, back about 1985. Yes that would be on film, not digital. My, then teenage son +Mike Runyon Jr had asked me how hard it would be to photograph lightning and I told him probably not hard, just put the camera on a tripod and do a long exposure.
A day or so later he came in and said "Dad there's a storm over Phoenix! Can we go photograph it?"  I grabbed my camera, cable release and tripod and off we went. I had to use the "bulb" setting on the camera since it didn't have very long exposure settings. This was the best of the 8-10 shots that night. At the time I hadn't seen the couple sitting on the bench in the foreground, but the long exposure brought them out.

Accidental Selfie
While out in the boonies, trying to duplicate a shot from years ago, I had the misfortune to discover my wireless remote had a bad battery and would only fire the camera from 4 or 5 feet away. It did make for some interesting selfies!

Love These Calls!
I just received a call from 1-(219) 555-0110 which my caller ID showed as Indiana. It should have said India as the guy who identified himself as "Tech Support" had a major Indian or Pakistani accent.
He told me their systems showed I had a major virus and he could correct it. I needed to go to my computer, which I did and push a few buttons which I did. He kept asking me if this or that was coming up when I pushed those buttons and I said it wasn't.
Finally I asked him "Will this work on this Linux operating system?" He paused and said I need to transfer you to that group and hung up! lol

I was checking out my wireless remote, to make sure it was working and not really paying attention to where the camera was pointing. Maisy apparently decided she wanted in the shot and I didn't realize she did that. I almost formatted my memory without seeing this. I thought it was cute of her.

Coyote Breakfast
I heard yesterday that someone one my block had their small dog killed by coyotes
This is in my front yard in January 2011 with coyotes dining on a rabbit they caught. The whining in the video is my dog, Yoda, wanting to get out at them.
Since there were 3 coyotes (one just off camera) and Yoda weighs in at 30lbs. while the average coyote weighs around 40lbs. I didn't think that would have been such a good idea!

Ready For The Storm
Years ago, 1985 to be exact, I captured a lightning storm over Phoenix on film. I was lucky and only shot about 8-10 frames to get the shot, but wanted to try it again with my newly acquired Nikon F-5.
Since film isn't particularly cheap to either buy or process, I wasn't wanting to blow through a couple of rolls to get the shot. I decided to use a lightning trigger, but as you can see by the picture on the left, the F-5 has a really strange 9 pin connector for remotes and such. I finally found one, ordered it, tested it and it works, so now I'm just waiting on the lightning!

Waiting For Me
Molly likes to go out on the patio with me when I have my morning coffee and will sit and wait for me to get my coffee, even though we have a doggie door and she can go out anytime she wants.
As soon as I pick up my cup she runs for the door and usually jumps up on the patio swing and snuggles with me while watching the birds or anything else that's going on in the backyard.

A Dangerous Beast!
+marit runyon captured this huge creature in the kitchen under a drinking glass, this morning before I got up. As she's adverse to touching anything alive, other than our dogs, it fell to me to corral this monster and escort him back to the great outdoors from which he came.
It was funny, but after he got used to the warmth of my hand, I had a hard time getting him to hop off onto the ground.

Lost Photo
A couple of weeks back I purchased a very gently used Nikon F-5 with body cap and manual from a Florida dealer on Ebay. When I eventually got around to reading the manual, this picture dropped from the back pages.
From the appearance of the photo it would well predate the F-5 which was manufactured between 1996 & 2004. It would appear to be from the early 1900's judging from the carpet, the background and the happy expression of the family's faces. A lot of shots from that era were done without the subjects smiling.
It would be fascinating to know the story behind the shot and today I have emailed the seller asking if the photo is his and if he'd like it returned. So far I haven't heard back from, but hope I do.

Still One of my Favorites!
While it seems there are some radical libtards that are trying to ban "Gone With The Wind", I have my copy and until and unless the PC Police want to try breaking in my door to take it, I'll keep on enjoying this classic movie. It's still a masterpiece after all these years.
BTW did you notice the sign in my yard that said "Gun Free Zone"? Of course you didn't! Think about it!

Nikon F-5
I purchased this bad boy from a Florida dealer Saturday about 9:30am (12:30pm FL time). It was delivered about noon on Monday! Super fast USPS priority. I bought it body only.
Relating to fast, this beast can shoot at 7.5 frames per second. Now that's fast! I can burn through a 36 exposure role in about 4.5 sec. It can also focus at a blazing fast rate, way faster than my D7000 & D7100 DSLRs can with the same lenses. Some of the camera review sites say it's almost thought focusing, it's so quick. I think that may be partially due to the fact it uses 8 AA batteries, giving it 12v to play with, while most DSLRs use between 6-7 volts.
The only review complaints I've found on it is it's weight which is 3.13 lbs. while my D7100 weighs in at 2.01lbs. However that's light compared to my Nikon F-2 which comes in at 4.11lbs. with it's motor drive in... mehr »

This particular camera looks as though it's hardly ever been used as there's not a mark or blemish of any kind on it anywhere. Many of the controls and function are laid out very similarly to my DSLRs and you can adjust almost anything.
Most major controls have locks, so you can't accidentally change settings you might not want to, including the power switch. Very advanced for it's time and I got it for about 1/10 of the factory introductory price, so I'm a happy camper!

Proud Mary
The City of Apache Junction Parks & Rec put on a concert with an excellent group called "Outside The Line" this past Saturday evening. Even though it was close to 110° it was very enjoyable.
The band played all the latest songs, such as "Proud Mary", "My Girl" , a few from ZZ Top and many others. Well, maybe the songs weren't quite the latest from the current Top 40, but better to listen to and they did it well.
Hats off to both Apache Junction Parks & Rec and Outside The Line!
