Yes, Apple is building a car

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/Upt4bH )

Steve Jobs wanted Apple to make an "iCar."

The late Apple founder and CEO wanted more than that, according to J. Crew CEO and chairman Mickey Drexler, who served on the Apple board from 1999 to 2015. Jobs wanted Apple to reinvent the automobile industry.

The idea of an Apple car was considered crazy talk — until word leaked about a secret Apple initiative called "Project Titan," which reportedly involved more than 1,000 engineers.

It has since emerged that Apple maintains a secret car-testing lab in Silicon Valley near Apple's headquarters, which reportedly operates under the fake company name SixtyEight Research.

But then reports emerged late last year that hundreds of "Project Titan" employees were reportedly removed from thep... mehr »

Apple just patented a paper bag

No, really! Apple was just granted a patent for an ordinary paper shopping bag. The patent's full claim is:

"The ornamental design for a bag, as shown and described."

Some 25 people get credit for inventing this bag. It comes with 27 drawings, including this one.

It's been a few years since I used to post Photospheres on Google+. In the old days, you just posted it and it worked. Now I'm posting it, and it doesn't work?

Is this still possible? What gives?

Ontario cop cars get GPS dart launchers

Dangerous, high-speed police chases happen because police don't want to "lose" suspects. It's about information — where's the perp?

Police cars used by Ontario cops are being outfitted with "laser" guided GPS darts. They launch these like rockets out of James Bond's Aston Martin. The darts "stick" to the suspect's car. Then the police can follow, but without going nuts in a high-speed chase.

I want this for my Prius.

A dog's life

This dog lives near our riad in Fez.

Cats and dogs in the Medina (old part of the city) are mostly homeless, and not pets. This dog is no exception.

A few days ago, we saw the dog with a horrible injury on its leg. It was bleeding and he couldn't stand on it.

Since that injury, a tiny mob of children come to our riad once a day and ask the riad's owner for medical supplies to help the dog. He gives them fresh bandages, tape and stuff like that, and the kids re-dress the wound every day.

The dog is totally cooperative during his medical attention, too, not resisting at all.

We noticed today that he's able to walk on the leg again. So far, so good.

The locals here are a reliable metric for food quality

It's a cliche to say that you should eat where the locals eat. But here in Fez, it's easy advice to follow, and incredibly sound advice.

As you walk around the Medina, the stalls are selling all kinds of stuff, and they're jammed close together. Some are deserted, others enjoy moderate customer traffic and still others are mobbed with a crowd.

We've tried all the above, and discovered an almost perfect correlation between mob density and food quality.

Here we found a small mob around a stall selling pickled veggies and fruits, as well as olives. Amira joined the pack, and while waiting observed what the locals were choosing. She chose the same stuff, including some spicy olives, and it was all incredible.

How trash works in the medina

The Medina part of Fez is the ancient, walled city, which is characterized by meandering cobblestone lanes, crooked buildings and narrow alleys. In fact, it's the largest car-free urban area in the world.

Without motorized vehicles, they use carts, horses and donkeys to transport things inside the Medina.

So how do they deal with trash collection?

That's what I wondered on my first day because I had a piece of paper to throw away, and there were no trashcans to be found.

Next morning, we got up early to wander around, and I found out.

As far as I can tell, people just throw trash on the ground. Then, at night or in the early morning, somebody comes along and sweeps it all into piles. Then the trash guys come around, and use two pieces of cardboard to pick up the trash and throw into a giant... mehr »

It also appears that these donkeys feed on the edible trash.

Is it possible to love a surge protector?

I did a ton of research before buying this surge protector for my trip to Spain and Morocco.

The reason is that I blew up some electronics on my previous trip, and want to avoid that.

So I bought this JOTO 2 outlet surge protector: https://goo.gl/FGGrB4

After using it for a couple months, I can tell you that it's ideal for my needs.

It's got two US three-prong plugs, three USB plugs (5V 2.4A Max) and one Type C plug (5V 3A Max). I usually have every plug in use charging everything at once, and it always charges reliably at high speed.

The electronics inside maximize compatibility with the devices, and also protect from over-heating, over-current and over-charging — when each battery is fully charged, the JOTO 2 shuts off power to that device. And get this: It's rated at 4,320j... mehr »

It sounds like a strange thing to care about, but the fit and finish of these device is ultra high quality. It's solid as a rock.

Google, A.I. and the rise of the super-sensor

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/Xz61sO )

Google dazzled developers this week with a new feature called Google Lens.

Appearing first in Google Assistant and Google Photos, Google Lens uses artificial intelligence (A.I.) to specifically identify things in the frame of a smartphone camera.

Google Lens is shiny and fun. But from the resulting media commentary, it was clear that the real implications were generally lost.

The common reaction was: "Oooh, look! Another toy for our smartphones! Isn't A.I. amazing!" In reality, Google showed us a glimpse of the future of general-purpose sensing. The common reaction was: "Oooh, look! Another toy for our smartphones! Isn't A.I. amazing!" In reality, Google showed us a glimpse of the future of general-purpose sensing. Thanks to machine learning, it's now possible to create a million different sensors in software using only one actual sensor -- the camera.

In Google's demo, it's clear that the camera functions as a "super-sensor." Instead of a flower-identification sensor, a bar-code reader and a retail-business identifier, Google Lens is just one all-purpose super-sensor with software-based, A.I.-fueled "virtual sensors" built in software either locally or in the cloud.

And that's not the only super sensor Google is involved with.

This is a new world:

Bathrooms have been politicized in the United States as sacred ground in the war on gender flexibility. (When Target announced that Target transgender people could use Target restrooms, one Florida woman said she'd be bringing her machine gun into Target bathrooms to protect herself.)

Public and restaurant bathrooms in Europe, meanwhile, are a nice respite from guns and politics. Some have separate rooms with the toilets but shared sink-and-mirror space.

This restaurant bathroom in Barcelona was a single tiny bathroom with one stall designated for women and the other for men — take your pick — with one sink for all. (No, stall doors didn't reach to the floor.)

Why I don't like tourist tapas

(Read my post: https://goo.gl/tEHU6H )

One of the great joys of living in Spain is tapas culture. In its purest form, the enjoyment of tapas involves long evenings drinking slowly and talking rapidly. Each new round of beer or wine is accompanied by a small plate of delicious food traditionally chosen and paid for by the bar.

One joy about tapas: the element of surprise. No paralysis of choice. No buyer's remorse. You get what they give you. There's no menu. There’s no charge. It's wonderful.

Great tapas are one of the greatest food experiences you can enjoy.

Tapas are mostly an Andalusian thing. Outside Southern Spain, tapas often work differently.

Top tapas to date

I love me some tapas. And, of course Spain is tapa heaven.

So far, my favorite tapas came in the form of manchego cheese topped with anchovies, mashed olives, peppercorns and cherry tomatoes, then drizzled with olive oil.

So. Fricken. Delicious.

It has since emerged that Apple maintains a secret car-testing lab in Silicon Valley near Apple's headquarters, which reportedly operates under the fake company name SixtyEight Research.

But then reports emerged late last year that hundreds of "Project Titan" employees were reportedly removed from the project.

Tech and financial pundits interpreted this events in various ways. Some said the car project was essentially canceled. Others said Apple is moving forward with cars, but is too far behind to catch up.

Most experts say that "Project Titan" has become a software play — that Apple will simply design an operating system for cars, but not the cars themselves.

These conclusions are almost certainly wrong.

Apple is definitely working on a car. They have to. Here's what we know:

Why your next business phone will be an Amazon Echo

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/sMvYfO )

"The phone is already dead."

That's what Microsoft visionary and HoloLens honcho Alex Kipman said this week.

The "phone call is making a comeback."

That's what one tech publication said this week, based in part on wishful thinking by MIT egghead and Reclaiming Conversation author Sherry Turkle.

Could both be true?

The answer is yes. Phones are definitely dead. Phone calls are forever. But the reasons why may surprise you.

Pizza Delivered In Five Minutes, Thanks to A.I. and Robots!

Silicon Valley’s Zume Pizza can deliver in five minutes because artificial intelligence predicts your order, robots make the pizza and automated ovens inside the truck bake it just before delivery.

Do you use IFTTT?

I'm trying to get to the bottom of something. I use IFTTT. I recently changed some passwords for some of the apps I use with IFTTT. However, this simply broke my IFTTT applets with no remedy in sight.

Each app registered with IFTT has an "Edit Connection" button. When I click this, literally nothing happens.

What about you? Are you able to change the passwords on the apps that you use with IFTTT, then register that password change with IFTTT?

Apple just patented a paper bag

No, really! Apple was just granted a patent for an ordinary paper shopping bag. The patent's full claim is:

Some 25 people get credit for inventing this bag. It comes with 27 drawings, including this one.

Starbucks sucks in Barcelona

I know, I know. Some number of you will reply with "Starbucks sucks everywhere." But I disagree.

As a nomad, I rarely have a "home office." I travel constantly, and live in homes that are not my own.

In short, I need a place to work. That means, at minimum, I need the fastest free WiFi I can find and a power outlet near a chair and table. I need to be able to work hours without getting booted. Good food and coffee would be nice.

(And for those of you who think people like me who work all day in a coffee place are abusing our fellow coffee addicts, I refer you to my Medium post on that subject.)

https://medium.com/@MikeElgan/why-you-should-support-the-coffee-shop-campers-ec1445eab5b7

Years ago, the concept of working on a laptop in a coffee joint hadn't reached Europe yet; I remember when there was exactly one Starbucks here in Barcelona, and it was an oasis, literally one one of the only places I could go and work when the slow WiFi in my apartment barfed completely.

Now there are Starbucks all over Barcelona. They're all packed with tourists. Worst of all, they've locked down their slow WiFi with a one-hour time limit. In other words, Starbucks is no longer a place where I can work.

Meanwhile, a Barcelona-based chain called 365 Cafe has spread like a virus across this city. I'm pretty sure there are more than 60 locations in Barcelona alone.

All of them offer fast, free unlimited WiFi, outlets and tables — equalling in Spain what Starbucks achieves in the United States. BUT, they have much-better-than-Starbucks food, including all kinds of baked goods, sandwiches and even fresh-squeezed O.J.

The coffee's probably better at Starbucks. But for working nomads, 365 Cafe is by far the best bet in Barcelona.

UPDATE: Upon further exploration, I've learned that 365 Cafes aren't all good all the time. It's a franchise outfit, and some stores have one-hour time-limits on the WiFi. Other's have fatally slow WiFi. So the hunt continues.

This is a baby drop-off

We pass this hole-in-the-wall pretty much every day between our apartment here in Barcelona and our grocery story.

Thanks to the brilliant Atlas Obscura, I learned that this hole is actually a baby drop-off that functioned between 1853-1931.

This building used to be an orphanage and the hole enabled people to anonymously give their unwanted babies up for adoption.

While this was in operation, there used to be a "turntable" inside, so once the baby was placed on the turntable, they would turn the wheel, thus delivering the baby to orphanage workers inside without anyone being seen.

This sort of arrangement was somewhat common in those days. What's uncommon is that this portal is still there and visible.

How the Amazon Echo Look improves privacy

Yeah, I said it. The privacy critics are dead wrong about Amazon's new A.I. bedroom camera. Read my column: https://goo.gl/UeJkfP

The Amazon Echo Look is like the original Echo, plus a camera.

The $200 device delivers the Alexa virtual assistant. But the camera is optimized for helping you choose clothing to look your best when you get dressed.

The Echo Look is a camera for your bedroom. As such, it's being widely slammed as a massive invasion of privacy.

But this view is wrong and based on a provably false assumption. Here's why:

Would you trust Amazon to give you fashion advice?

(Comments disabled. Please vote and comment on Noble's post!)

Would you trust Amazon to give you fashion advice?
Amazon is launching a service called Style Check, which uses machine learning and a team of "fashion specialists" to help you compare two looks and decide which one is better. The feature is similar to one called Outfit Compare, which is available to Prime members.

Called Echo Look, it's an Alexa-enabled camera that can take full length photos or videos of you, help you build a "personal lookbook," and give a second opinion on your outfit.

By saying, "Alexa, take a picture" or "Alexa, take a video," the device uses its depth-sensing camera and LED lighting to capture your look and create a lookbook of all your outfits. Amazon even built in "computer vision-based background blur" to make your outfit photos look more high-quality.
+ The device is now available on Amazon's website for $199.99.

OK, Google, let's put the new voice ID everywhere

(Read my column: https://goo.gl/WpBNMb )

Google Home now recognizes who you are when you talk to it. This technology is too powerful and useful to leave at Home.

This is a huge deal, a technological marvel and a major leap forward in human-machine interaction.

It's also a cautionary tale about the downside of overzealous concern about privacy.

What do you think? Is Google being too cautious about privacy?

The Auto Awesomes of Italy (a continuing series)

This is no run-of-the-mill mill. It's the Molinetto della Croda, an ancient mill that's been around for around four centuries. It kept going until the early 1950s, then fell into disrepair. More recently, they've refurbished the joint and got it running again for visitors.
