Scott Jarvie447,200*POST YOUR GOOGLE+ ALBUM OF PICTURES* It's been very very popular event in the past and I'm finally doing it again tonight. _This time it will be more organized, more heads up than usual and even a live event._ *SHARE AN ALBUM/GALLERY LINK* It's simple and easy but a lot of work and very fun for all. You simply share an album here and I'll be going through every single one of the albums. Then I will +1 the pictures in the album that I'm really drawn to. *BENEFIT* Well it's simply if you'd love to know which pictures I like most.  I always loved knowing which pictures people really love of mine because it helps me have an eye for which pictures are best received. It's a huge part of becoming a better photographer in my opinion. _*To be able to put out great art is first to know what great art looks like*_ *ON AIR* This will be something new... I'm going to go through all the albums Live, Online as an On-Air hangout. I'll talk a little bit about what I'm doing. If the show goes well I'll keep it for later viewing on YouTube... if the recording isn't great I won't. *SPECIAL GUEST* Because I want to have an outloud conversation about what and why I'm doing things  I will have my good friend and great photographer @109486822103622036238 on the show to facilitate the discussion. She will also visit a lot of these albums and +1 pictures as well. We ask that everyone add her to a circle ... not just because she's awesome (though that's reason enough) but so that if any of these albums are by mistake limited access she will have access. *DIRECTIONS* 1. Paste a link of a Google+ image gallery 2. Put a title or description of what we'll see in the album 3.  *IMPORTANT* If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and perhaps your profile in a recorded Youtube video. 4. Make sure the album is Public access 5. Add @100962871525684315897  @109486822103622036238 to your circles 6. Return the favor. Take some of the other people's albums and +1 some of your favorites. *IMPORTANT* It bears repeating: _If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and your profile (maybe) in a recorded Youtube video._ Do not post a link if you are not ok with lots of people visiting that link in addition to us and are not ok with it being on video as well.Share your Album- A Jarvie PlusOne Critique Experience2012-09-12 05:30:00141

Ok, could I get some opinions from the gentlemen here please?
I currently own an iPhone 6 Plus. I really would like to upgrade the phone, because that's what I like to do. Normally, I do give my old phones to either my husband or my son, but this time around, they don't want the big phone. My husband has a 4S, my son a 5C and they both rather keep their older phone than having to deal with the big phone's size.
I actually was toying with the idea of not buying the iPhone 7 and keep my 6 Plus for a little while longer, but now that I have to sell the phone, I have to sell it now. If I wait any longer, I will not get much for it anymore. If I sell it now, I need a new phone - but if I get a 7 Plus, I will be running into the same problem again next time I want to upgrade - men don't seem to like the big screens. Makes the phone hard to put in your pocket.

Do you have the... mehr »

So, I used the iPhone 7 for the first time this weekend to film a video. I was holding the phone with one hand, and walked, mostly looking down to avoid slipping and falling into the mud. When I looked at it afterwards, I was amazed at how stable the video was. That's nuts. I've done such videos before, but they were always super shaky! Very pleased with that.

If you watch one thing on Netflix this fall, do yourself a favour and watch "Shetland". You may need to get used to the very heavy Scottish accent at first, but you will fall in love with the show like we did. The photography alone makes it worth it, but also the plot, the story lines and the amazing acting by everyone involved.

After watching a bunch of British TV shows, I just can't stomach the American mainstream crap anymore.

I need help.
I'm really depressed today. Have been for a few days now. My husband suggested to focus on something positive. But I have a really hard time finding something positive to focus on. Do you have any suggestions for me? Something to cheer me up?
Thank you so much!!

Day 5, Hour Zero: Redemption
Well, the time has come to say good-bye to phone-less existence. I am finally able to join the world of the living with instant Google searches, canned music, and texts - left, right and center.
The iPhone 7 has arrived, and it's a beauty. I will spend some time today to set it all up, and to get used to a smaller phone.

And then, I will report on how I like it. But this is for another time and another place. Right now I'm just glad I have my connection to the world back. I missed you guys. I really did.

Day 5, Hour 3: The End is [Edit:NOT] Near
It seems that my research is coming to an end. Did I survive for 5 days without a phone? I managed - barely.

On day 1, I set up my iPad at work so I could still check messages (although only iMessage did work, no other messages would come through).
On day 3, I borrowed my husband's phone to help me navigate my way through the city. I totally cheated that day, although I never used it for anything else. Ok, a quick message to my son.
On day 4, I made several phone calls with my landline... and I am now considering getting rid of it altogether.
Day 5 (today) is spent with waiting by the front door for the UPS truck, so it doesn't matter if I have a phone or not.

My findings have proven to me that indeed without some connection to a mobile device I would be toast. I am relying on this piece of technology, the... mehr »

Day 5 (today) is spent with waiting by the front door for the UPS truck, so it doesn't matter if I have a phone or not.

My findings have proven to me that indeed without some connection to a mobile device I would be toast. I am relying on this piece of technology, the computer in my pocket, the database at my fingertips, for everything all day long. I don't mind it. People get upset, shouting that we are dependent on technology and we should unplug. I respond by saying that everything we depend on was technology once. A toilet, for example, and indoor plumbing - I am sure back in the day they were considered technology too. Nobody wants to give that up. That would be silly. Indoor plumbing and a working toilet are essential to a person's survival. I am certain that the smartphone will have toilet status soon. ___

Day 4, Hour 6: Landline
Time is flying by, and I'm without a phone. Which, technically speaking, isn't correct. I have phone on my desk at work, and a phone at home. Landlines are phones, too. And as such, they have roles to play, and - of course - feelings. My home phone has been feeling neglected. Despite being of the cord free variety, my home phone relies on the charger too much. But my home phone number has been living the high life, for years. It gave away its number too freely, too often. And we as a family had the price to pay. Everyone and their grandma seems to have our number. And it rings. Loudly. Too loud. The ringing phone isn't a pleasant companion. It reminds us of unpaid bills, of appointments we missed, of relatives announcing their visit. Your home phone rings, and you shudder. Your mobile phone rings, and you are eager to answer because it's probably a friend,... mehr »

I've come to realize that the home phone is nothing more than an unpleasant sounding dust collector. For a week, it stood in the lime light once more. But its glory days have come to an end, and soon it will meet the destiny of all things analogue: Craigslist.___

Day 3, Hour 6: Paranoia
There are whispers in the office. My coworkers think I don't hear them, but I do. They are plotting against me. They offered me donuts today, but I didn't eat any. I know they are laced with laxative, to make me think I'm sick so I'll stay home. That, or worse.
It was bound to happen, I don't blame them. I keep looking at their phones with drool dripping off the corner of my mouth. I am glued to their sides when they check their messages. I keep asking them for the time, just so that they pull out their phone from their pocket or purse, to catch a glimpse of shininess. I burst into tears when I hear a cellphone go off somewhere on my floor. The donuts look good though...

Day 3, Hour 4: Addiction
Hello, my name is Karin, and I haven't had a phone in three days. Every once in a while I try holding my iPad to my ear, but it's just not the same. For the first time in three days I am aware how cut off I really am. People may be calling me right now, but there is nobody on the other side to answer their call. My SIM card is rotting in my wallet. My watch is collecting dust on my dresser. I dream about the days when I do a quick google search on the road to prove my son wrong. Now when he claims that "the capital of Canada is Toronto", I have to take his word for it. I miss the time when I could check the weather without having to look out the window. I miss the moments when I opened my messages and saw that I didn't get any... now I have to guess that I'm not popular. My life is empty.

I couldn't help it. I stole borrowed my husband's phone this morning. I have to drive in the city this afternoon to a place I've never been to, and I need Siri to help me find the way. What's a girl without a phone to do? Well, theft of course.
I wanted to remove his SIM card and insert mine, but mine doesn't fit because his phone is quite old. So I promised myself not to snoop in his emails or texts. I just hope his girlfriend doesn't call him today. Or ever.

Not like most of my friends, who can go for months in ignorant bliss, going about their day never knowing that a new operating system was even released. I am up to date. Not being able to do it today breaks my little nerdy heart.

Day 2, Hour 11: Paper?
I just came home from the dentist. At the end of the appointment, at the reception desk, I usually make a new appointment for my next check-up. But instead of whipping out my trusted phone to make sure to mark down the date (and check for any double bookings), I had to accept a paper slip. A PAPER SLIP! Like in the dark ages. Written by hand, on real paper. I had to wait until I got all the way home to my computer to check that indeed I don't have any appointments scheduled on January 25, 2017. Don't scoff. I'm a busy woman.

Day 2, Hour 7: Back at work
I had to leave my Apple watch at home today. It won't even display time without being connected to an iPhone. That's really stupid. It won't tell me the time. The screen keeps saying "Pair with iPhone". The time isn't even displayed in an itty bitty corner somewhere. It's simply states to pair with an iPhone. Well, duh. I DON'T HAVE AN IPHONE. My wrist is bare, with an ugly tan line. Like not having a watch isn't bad enough already.

Apple's website says that my phone will be arriving on the 16th. That's 4 days from now. And it hasn't shipped yet. This isn't good. Not good at all. Slight panic is setting in. I check again every hour, but no change. Do they know that I don't have a phone right now. I mean, are they aware of the implications?

Most stations are crap, and other are just bad reception. At least I have air conditioning. And a seat belt.

On Craigslist, this phone sells for around $ 700 (or more... what... are they crazy???). And then you don't even know if it was stolen, or owned by someone who had cooties. You just can't tell. I, on the other hand, would I'd be happy with a totally rational $ 499. The paperclip for the SIM card door will be $ 1.

If you're interested, contact me. I don't have cooties.

Do you have the same concern? And as far as you knowledgeable lot knows, do you think there will be a bit loss of quality screenwise if I "downsize" to a smaller screen with less resolution? I'm kinda at a loss. Thanks for any opinions, I appreciate it!___

I have a first world problem: For the past two years, I owned a smartphone with a fairly large screen. I do not carry my phone in my pocket, not ever, so it seemed a reasonable thing to do. While I love the screen size, I don't love how big the phone is, and how cumbersome it is to use at times.

Have you ever downsized a phone? What are your experiences? Did you regret it?

What impressed me the most with Whistler was how much nature they brought into the village. So quaint and beautiful (but not as quaint as some of the ski village in Switzerland or Austria... this is a much more modern "quaint" - not sure if that even exists.)

Yesterday, we showed our guest a bit of the wilderness in our neighbourhood. We drove up above to where the houses and, end then even further, where the tarmac ends. We were trying to get to a certain street, but the roads were worse than I remembered. I passed the time trying to catch some Pokemon. Eventually, a grey outline of a Pokemon showed up on my "nearby" list of Pokemon. I showed Thomas, who was in the back seat, and he started screaming. "A CHARMANDER! IT'S A CHARMANDER!"
Panic set in. I ordered my poor husband to stop the car. We jumped out (well, not Erik, but everyone else) and walked frantically along the forest road. Now when I say forest road, I mean an unpaved road, that winds along a mountain in between deep forests and greenery. No houses. No nothing. Yet, there was a Charmander. Now when I say forest road, I mean an unpaved road, that winds along a mountain in between deep forests and greenery. No houses. No nothing. Yet, there was a Charmander. No other Pokemon, except for that one. The cellphone coverage was shoddy, but he Charmander was there. Billy (our guest from China) was first to get him to spawn on this screen. Then Thomas. Both tried to catch him frantically. Thomas succeeded and jumped around screaming like a girl. Billy had no luck, the Charmander escaped. I walked around, phone held up in front of me, to get the damn thing to spawn on my screen as well, but it wouldn't. I kept walking up and down, and just as I was about to give up, BINGO! Now I had to catch the damn thing. Razzberries, ultra balls, great balls, curved balls, straight balls... nothing. And finally, my cell phone coverage disappeared on me, completely.
"No, NOOOOO!" I cried, holding the phone over my head, desperately. I walked around in a daze, the Charmander still on my screen as if waiting for me to launch my next ball. I kept walking back and forth, standing on my tippy toes, begging the sky to give me back my connection as my husband threatened to drive away without me. Finally, the coverage was back, and I launched my last couple of balls towards the little dragon... and just as I was about to give up, I caught him.

I don't care if I look stupid. I have a Charmander now. That beats looking stupid in my book. :)___

Of course, Whistler was the host of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and there are remnants of this event still everywhere. But even without the Olympic Rings, Whistler is worth a visit - even if it's only a short stop like the one we did to eat some kangaroo pie.

Our first stop: Whistler.
What do you do, when you have a successful winter sport village that's quite empty in summer? You let people use the hill for mountain biking!

The ski lift gets transformed to bring riders up the hill, and then they ride down. All day long. Every day in summer. It's big business. I wouldn't do it if you paid me to, but if nature is already wrecked by the ski hill business, why not use it for more stuff?

Things that make me laugh:

"Please consider the environment before printing this email."

Ok. I pause and stare blankly onto my computer screen. Deep grooves appear on my forehead. I consider the environment. I consider it, a lot. Sweat beats are forming on my upper lip, and still I am considering the environment. Am I supposed to get to a point here? What about the environment am I supposed to consider? What does it even mean, to consider something? Considering something means thinking about something. Contemplate it. Reflect on it. Which I am doing.
After a few minutes of contemplating the environment - 'Oh, it's nice and sunny outside!' - I hit the button and print the bloody email.

English is funny.

Road Trip!
In July, we packed up our car and went on a 11 day road trip through British Columbia. We saw mountains, we saw streams. We saw little towns, and bigger ones. The ocean. Beaches. Forests. Outhouses. And roads, lots and lots of roads. In fact, we traveled about 4,200 km worth of roads, and we only came halfway up our beautiful province. This is the account of our trip. I hope you enjoy the pictures and posts I will be producing in the coming days.

For the past 17 years I collected personal things in this spare closet. Photos. Computers. Papers. Camera stuff. Purses. All kinds of crap.

But now I have to vacate the closet. And I'm scared. Very, very scared.

I'm back from our roadtrip and two weeks in Germany with my parents. The holidays are over, and I already finished painting two rooms before moving Thomas into his new bedroom to make space for the new addition to our family - a student from China who will be with us for a year. He arrives on Saturday, and I want to put a little welcome gift basket in his room, but I haven't got a clue what to put in the basket. On one hand, I want to introduce him to Canada, on the other hand though I think he may enjoy something that reminds him of home? Or both? Any suggestions would be welcome. Maybe it's not even so much the fact that he's from China... but he's 16 - what do 16-year-olds like?
