Scott Jarvie445,409*POST YOUR GOOGLE+ ALBUM OF PICTURES* It's been very very popular event in the past and I'm finally doing it again tonight. _This time it will be more organized, more heads up than usual and even a live event._ *SHARE AN ALBUM/GALLERY LINK* It's simple and easy but a lot of work and very fun for all. You simply share an album here and I'll be going through every single one of the albums. Then I will +1 the pictures in the album that I'm really drawn to. *BENEFIT* Well it's simply if you'd love to know which pictures I like most.  I always loved knowing which pictures people really love of mine because it helps me have an eye for which pictures are best received. It's a huge part of becoming a better photographer in my opinion. _*To be able to put out great art is first to know what great art looks like*_ *ON AIR* This will be something new... I'm going to go through all the albums Live, Online as an On-Air hangout. I'll talk a little bit about what I'm doing. If the show goes well I'll keep it for later viewing on YouTube... if the recording isn't great I won't. *SPECIAL GUEST* Because I want to have an outloud conversation about what and why I'm doing things  I will have my good friend and great photographer @109486822103622036238 on the show to facilitate the discussion. She will also visit a lot of these albums and +1 pictures as well. We ask that everyone add her to a circle ... not just because she's awesome (though that's reason enough) but so that if any of these albums are by mistake limited access she will have access. *DIRECTIONS* 1. Paste a link of a Google+ image gallery 2. Put a title or description of what we'll see in the album 3.  *IMPORTANT* If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and perhaps your profile in a recorded Youtube video. 4. Make sure the album is Public access 5. Add @100962871525684315897  @109486822103622036238 to your circles 6. Return the favor. Take some of the other people's albums and +1 some of your favorites. *IMPORTANT* It bears repeating: _If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and your profile (maybe) in a recorded Youtube video._ Do not post a link if you are not ok with lots of people visiting that link in addition to us and are not ok with it being on video as well.Share your Album- A Jarvie PlusOne Critique Experience2012-09-12 05:30:00141

Well, because of Trump and his big mouth, after 25 years without any issues, this Canadian man now has to give up his personalized license plate, which simply displays his last name. But with the name Lorne Grabher, the man pretty much cannot show up anywhere anymore without causing a ruckus.
Thanks Trump. :(

Since I am not a Nikon shooter (anymore), but I settled on Fuji for the past few years, I finally grew tired of my portrait holding a Nikon, and I switched the Nikon with my Fuji. No, I didn't reshoot the portrait. I fiddled with photoshop instead.

Sorry, but for me, +Google+ is still the one to beat. Nothing else comes even close.

Meanwhile in Canada, people get their panties in a twist because Trudeau's Christmas vacation with his family cost the taxpayer $ 127,000 - most of it for the security. Well, duh. You've got a prime minister with a young family, and they want to go on vacation. You have to pay to protect him. It's the same in every country in the world. We can afford to protect him a few times a year. I'm looking at the $ 127,000 (CANADIAN!) and compare that to how much Trump spent in the few weeks he's been in office (over $ 10,000,000 in the first month alone), and then I'm thinking.... yeah. We can totally afford to protect our wonderful prime minister. At Christmas, spring break, Easter, summer holidays, Thanksgiving, Hannukah and any other holiday he may want to take. Seriously.

Week 10 - Winter is over.
It's wishful thinking, I know. But yesterday you could walk around without winter jacket. We went for a stroll along the Fraser River and tanked some sunshine. It was almost too warm for how we were dressed, but the warmth and the clear air felt wonderful. Very soon the first buds are going to break through, and allergy season will be here.

Week 8: My birthday is over
I didn't get a lot of photos in over my birthday. The one photo I adore was taken by my friend with my camera, so I couldn't really post it at my own. Instead, I took some picture of the roses another friend gave me. It was frustrating to say the least. I am really hoping Fuji will bring out that 1:1 macro lens soon they have been promising. It's was missing in my kit.

You just have to do it, day after day, month by month, until all the crap is gone. I'm working my way backwards. 2017 is done. Only 10 more years to go.

New (old) website
I've been working to streamline my internet presence. I grew tired of a brand name that I don't need, and nobody understands. Plus, it was getting really expensive to maintain so many domain names. I have now only three, which makes things simpler. All three domain names now point to the same website, which has no more designed logo as a header, but simply a signature in its space. Everything is now branded karinnelson.ca. Gone is the chili pepper. I think it's just easier. I also made the website wider, and I have a new landing page. I think it looks great. But I am clearly biased.

I have started to watermark some images. I think it's time to get more serious about copyright protection. Not that it really changes anything, but why not take credit for things I create? My photos won't be featured on Chromecast any longer, but again, what does it matter? It's not like they pay me a royalty for it. :)

Selling my photos online
I have been considering selling my photos online for a while now. Since I went halfheartedly in it, I never had much success. I uploaded some stuff to FineArtAmerica, to Crated, to 500px, and even to Redbubble. But something inside me always buckled. I am not a fan of those sites, simply because they don't really cater to the Canadian customers. Plus the prices are exorbitant. I wanted a way to sell my photos for cheaper, believe it or not. Well, I have found a way. You can now buy my images on Shutterstock. And yes, the photos will only be $ 10 each. The URL there is still "kayenne", but I'm working on changing that too. I've always been enamored with the idea of stock photography. Why not selling the images I am already taking anyway. I still have lots of keywording and uploading to do...

It was a cold night. The moon, high in the sky, overlooked the soccer field. Our boys had arrived in 10 for the last game of the season. One man short they took to the field. My heart sank. How could they possibly beat the other team, on their turf, with one man missing and no subs?
In the second half, one of our players got a ball to the head and was out for a few minutes. They were only 9 on the field for a while, but they held on.
And not only did they hold on... in the end, they won the game 3-0!!!

Can you tell I'm proud? What a game!! What a season!! Congratulations, Chiefs!

In the description here, it tells me that I can have a Domain Alias, but when i try to add it, it won't let me. What am I doing wrong? I already added all the MX values in the DNS settings. Domain is verified and all. Won't it work because I'm on a free version? It used to work.

Today, after 6 long months of waiting patiently, my Prepd lunch kit finally arrived. What kind of nut is waiting 6 months for a lunch kit, you ask?
Well. Me. When design gets together with useful gadgets, I cannot resist. So far, I took it out of the box, and took some pictures (duh). Then looked it up and down and found that it looks exactly as I hoped it would. Very well made, not too big, not too heavy, and super sleek.
The bamboo case has a rubberized inner lining that opens up and becomes your eating mat. The cutlery is magnetic and sticks together only one way. The containers are interchangeable, stackable and leak proof. There are small oval inserts that will freeze and then sit on the inside of the kit to keep everything nice and cool. And for the lunch-ignorants out there, the Prepd kit comes with its own app full of recipes that are just sized enough to fit in the containers.

Have I used it yet? Nope. Do I love it already! You bet!

Evaluating Facebook

I have been registered with Facebook for a long time. I remember how thrilled I was to discover old friends from literally all over the world, and how one app could bring us all together again. But the times have changed. Facebook is not beautiful anymore. Facebook isn't fun. For me, it has become toxic.

I am by no means your typical Facebook user. I haven't had the Facebook app installed on my smartphone for years. I never play games on Facebook, and I barely ever do the surveys that tell me what superhero I am, or which country I fit in best. I don't generally post Facebook events, and I don't go to any, either. But I would visit Facebook mostly through my browser on my computer. And I would go and check what's new, and what's trending.

Facebook is literally the only way that allows me to connect to friends in Europe since most of my friends there have never even heard for Google+. Yet I decided that I have to stay away. I feel that for me, despite risking to lose my connections, it is the only way to stay sane.

Facebook promotes news stories. And this is where the problem lies. Stories are often blown out of proportion, or plain wrong. They are sensationalized, they are dumbed down, and they are of bad taste. I had already quit all the Facebook feeds from all news outlets I had previously subscribed to, but it was not enough.

Facebook promotes "Likes", meaning, I can see what my friends like, although they chose not to share a story or a picture. Even though I had quit all the stupid news, I was still getting them. Because of what my friends "liked". Or "disliked". I started unfollowing a lot of people, but it just wasn't enough. Facebook would fill my stream with crap. Every news story came with its own long tail of hatred-filled, disgusting battles. People on Facebook would fight each other to the death (as it seemed), and bigotry and ignorance ruled the roost. The only way for me to stop the stream of crap was to either UNFOLLOW all of my friends, or stop going on Facebook. I chose the latter.

If you follow me on Facebook, you may see that all of the things I am posting here also appear on my Facebook page. I chose not to interrupt this automation. I did not cancel my Facebook account. I just chose not to visit Facebook anymore. I may put Messenger back on my phone since it's really just an app to stay in contact, but I will not fall back into the old habit of checking out what's new on Facebook. I'm done with it.

Does it have anything to do with what went on in the American election? I'm not sure. You may have noticed in the past that I have struggled with Facebook for a long time. The ads, the layout, the way it mangles my pictures. The algorithms used with which it chose what to show me and what not, and the way it seems to chomp down everything in cutesy, bite size pieces even small brains can absorb... What ultimately gave me the last push was something I had noticed only during the past few weeks: people on Facebook don't seem to give a flying hoopla about orthography anymore. Maybe because the text size is so small, or because it has become socially acceptable not to use punctuation anymore. Despite the fact that one can easily edit a post after the fact, nobody seems to care. In short: The level of intellect on Facebook had gone down far below what I can tolerate on a day-to-day basis. It was time to call it quits.

I am not saying that every Facebook user is stupid, far from it. But I believe that every Facebook user should take a long hard look at this social network, at what it has become, and evaluate if it is worth all the time we invest in it.

I do hope that Google+ survives. +Google+ still offers a unique social network experience. The level of quality interaction is high, and noise and nuisances are kept to a bare minimum. On Google+ I am in control of what I see in my social media news stream, and not the other way around. And that's how I think it should be.

So in case you are reading this on Facebook, and you want to connect with me on Google+, just follow the link below. Or text me. Or send me an email. I'm still here. ___

Today I realized that I detest American cheesecake, because it will never ever be better than German cheesecake. German cheesecake is light and fluffy and tastes amazing with raisins. The only problem is that you need quark to make it. Quark is a German soft cheese, somewhere in between yogurt, cottage cheese and sour cream. It's extremely cheap to buy in Germany, and super expensive in Canada. Where in Germany, you get a pound of quark for mere pennies, in Canada the pound sets you back by 12 dollars - IF you can find it.

I made cheesecake today using 2/3 cottage cheese and 1/3 greek yogurt. Not bad, but not quite right.
Then I found a recipe online of how to make quark with buttermilk in my Instant Pot. I will try tomorrow. Wish me luck.

After long deliberation, I decided to sign up for the Amazon Drive unlimited cloud storage option. It will let me store all my photos and all my files without ever having to worry to run out of room. I can access all the files from anywhere via a browser, or my phone. I can have synchronized folders for stuff I work on all the time and static archives for things I only want to park there to keep it safe. Despite the recent Amazon mishap, I feel that my items are secure on Amazon, and the price cannot be beaten.

I had some issues signing up for it since it would not let me subscribe to the service for some strange reason, so I had to contact customer service twice. They still haven't gotten back to me, but I guess I shouldn't complain. :)

So far I'm impressed with the upload speed. I like the interface quite a bit, and the fact that I can just drag and drop things. I am aware that by uploading all my archives into the cloud I am dependent on this cloud service and will have to pay a fee every year, but I consider this an insurance policy.

The reason that I did not go with a backup service (like Carbonite etc.) instead is my poor experience with such service. My whole computer is backed up hourly through TimeMachine on a secondary hard drive. I have Carbonite on my work computer (not my choice) and the whole thing is a hot mess. I much rather just copy all the important files manually on a cloud, and then - if needed - I can restore them from there by picking and choosing which ones to take. I am also aware that this may take a LOOOOOONG time, but despite paying for the service every year, I hope I will never have to use the service. Not ever. :)

I'm so happy someone finally put it into words. YES, we need to do our part and boycott this appalling trend!

We, the public, should reject outright all stories with link-bait headlines.

Compare the two headlines from Huffington Post and The Chive below to the one from The Verge. Notice a difference? The first two rely on that abominable technique of leaving out a key piece of information to make the reader curious. On the HuffPo article, you're forced to think "What was the mistake??" On The Chive one, it wants us all to wonder what was the idea about?

The Verge's headline, in contrast, offers up the key facts as a proper journalistic headline should.

If we wanted to rewrite the Verge headline to use the same awful technique as the first two, it'd probably turn out something like: "Google makes Photos better with this one wierd trick."

The purposeful obfuscation of headlines in order to drive traffic is an appalling trend and one we should all reject by never clicking on them. The same should be said for overtly hyperbolic headlines (e.g., 'Trump campaign devastated by new leaks' -- the word "devastated" shouldn't be used in headlines unless a massive earthquake took out a significant city...then it's appropriate).

Seriously, until we hold "news" sources to a higher standard, we're never going to have better news sources. And until we start drawing a clearer line between news sources and entertainment/opinion outlets, we will continue to have people confusing/conflating the two.

Chicken and Dumplings just doesn't look very photogenic. This version has a bit of turmeric, which gives it a nice warm colour.

I did it! Tonight, I set up my browser with a script in Terminal to block Facebook, and I also blocked Facebook on my phone. I even deleted the Messenger app.

I feel so much better already!
