What's Happened To Google+?

This seems to be a really big question right now and while we have some answers, and maybe a few more than just some, we still have a lot of them that are not answered or that just have us wondering.

The Beginning Of G+

When Google+ was first introduced back in June 2011 and for a good 2, 3 maybe 4 years after that G+ really flourished and it flourished quite well. It grew each and every day, every month and each year according to stats we were seeing and reading about online. Even Googlers themselves, such as +Natalie Villalobos and others were telling us how G+ was growing, what good things were happening and other great news on a pretty regular basis.

Google+ was often updated and new features were added. Bugs were squashed and interaction was superb. And interaction being "superb" is truly an... mehr »

+Android Police wrote about this today and within seconds of seeing the post I had this waiting for me in Google Photos.

As you can all tell, I take a lot of pictures of my kitty, Bess, and I think she enjoys it.

This is probably the best thing that +Google Photos and Assistant has ever done.

Hard to believe that 40 years ago today this movie was given to us by George Lucas and friends. It totally changed movies, Sci-Fi movies at least, completely and forever.

This is a series of movies that I've been passionate about since the day I saw it, May 25th, 1977 and to this day is still my favorite all time series of movies and always will be.

Forty years later Star Wars is just as strong as it was 15 years ago, 25 years ago and even 30 years ago. It's become an empire of all empires in so many ways.

+Star Wars will be around forever it seems, especially now that it's owned by Disney. And I have no complaints of it being around for the rest of my life!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Star Wars. May the force forever be with you!

This is pretty much in tune with the post I made a week or so ago. It's not someone whining and bitching to whine and bitch, but a long time user voicing his opinion on a place he loves and has loved for a long time.

Everything +Joseph Hindy stated here is absolutely true and I agree with it all, just as he agreed with most of my post that I made. Joseph has been here for a very long time and I've followed him pretty much from the day he arrived, but I rarely see posts from him and that's a shame because he's actually one of only a handful of bloggers that I like and even want to read articles from. But I rarely ever see his posts and I can often go weeks without seeing posts from him.

As I have stated in other places, I did have a Hangouts with +Leo Deegan the other night and it was very promising and I feel there's sincerity in what he told me as far as the G+... mehr »

Here is my final post on what's wrong with Google+

I have seen a lot of posts about what's wrong with Google+ over the course of the last couple of months. In fact, they are some of the largest posts in my news feed. It seems like a lot of people have left the site and pretty much the only people left are trying to figure out what went wrong.

I have posted about this before, ad nauseum, so I've decided to put my final thoughts on the matter all in one post and then just leave it there, for better or for worse. I really enjoyed Google+. I'm not leaving, but I feel like this place will never have the kind of vibrant ecosystem that it once had. It happens.

So while my laptop slowly dies in front me, I shall type out my final thoughts on Google+ and then proceed with my usual ramblings about new tech I bought or my posts on Android Authority. I promise, this is my last one. Here's hoping the G+ teams at least glances over it :P

1. The news feed algorithm sucks
This is by far the worst offender, and one that I've seen people complain about for years. The algorithm simply does a bad job at guessing what people want to see. I haven't seen a post from Mike Elgan on my news feed in 3 years. Many fellow bloggers (the few that are left standing here anyway) don't show up. Most of the websites, news sites, and blogs I follow don't either. In fact, during the course of my average day, I see posts from maybe about 25 people. I follow far more than that. The algorithm doesn't show me the rest.

I've had followers tell me that they didn't even know I was still active here because their feed doesn't show me anymore. It doesn't seem to matter who it is or how often they're active. The algorithm simply isn't showing people what they want to see. At least, based on all the posts, replies, and discussions I've seen, that seems to be what a ton of people are saying.

It's also my number 1 sticking point personally. You can't follow trends at all (hashtags only barely still exist here). Whether or not you see current events is random at best. One time, I saw a post by +Roy Hembree at the top of my feed. He had just finished constructing a fence. The post right after it? Why, it was Roy's post from 4 hours prior about how he was about to start building a fence. Thanks Google+.

Now, the normies probably don't mind this so much. The Facebook/Instagram/Pinterest mentality of "we're not here for the latest, just show us stuff we've not seen yet" is a demographic that is not complaining about this. However, some of the most engaging, long tenured members and some of the biggest power users have lost a lot of their steam here because we can't talk about the latest thing anymore unless G+ just so happens to bring it up for us. Talking about the latest thing won't show engagement for hours sometimes. Why bother posting about the latest current event if no one's going to see it until tomorrow? Then it doesn't matter anymore.

Thus, I believe that the terrible algorithm is a large reason why some of the more loyal G+-ers have left the site, have stopped posting, or are currently complaining. I would prefer a chronological order. At worst, something like what twitter does. Show the posts in order and then interrupt the feed every now and then for a "stuff you may have missed" section. The full algorithm isn't doing it's job and is literally preventing active users from engaging with one another. Just because I don't +1 someone's post or share it doesn't mean I don't want to see it, Google+.

2. The site is actually losing large companies, people with large followings, etc
I went through my circles a while ago and started dropping people who haven't been active in at least 6 months. Included are huge companies like the official NHL page (and most team-specific pages), several large news/tech sites, and many prominent bloggers (including some from Android Authority).

Facts are facts. People and companies that matter are leaving this place. Even if the news feed is a bunch of random posts from anytime within the last 2-3 days, not having official NHL news (or any NHL teams) lowers the quality of the hockey content significantly. Likewise with news sites, tech sites, and big personalities. The news feed is simply a worse place without them.

If Google+ is going to grow stronger, they gotta find a way to make the platform appealing enough to bring those things back. I come here because of tech, but my hockey G+ circle is literally entirely gone. I go elsewhere for my interests outside of tech. I suspect many others have as well (maybe not hockey, but i'm sure that's not the only interest that's not represented well here anymore).

This also kind of ties into the algorithm. I can see why big sites and companies kind of throw in the towel here when it seems like no one is interested in their content. In reality, a lot of people who are interested may not be seeing it. I didn't know the NHL was inactive until I looked myself because I'm so used to the G+ news feed not showing me everything I follow.

3. The robots made everything seem better than it was
My 50k followers aren't all real people. In fact, most of them aren't. It gave me a false sense of happiness and I'm mad that it was a lie. Likewise, spam comments, spam follows, spam shares...while it makes the numbers on a post look better, the content is hollow, empty, and lacks engagement. Spam has been discussed in a big way in +Cliff Wade's Google+ post (linked just below), so I won't go into it here since I agree with a lot of it:
https://plus.google.com/+CliffWade/posts/Dfa4b1i7Aka

4. Google+ started out about people, now it's about stuff
When Google+ first started, it was about people. Managing and building circles, creating connections, chatting with random people about stuff you had in common, etc. A lot of the loyal, long time users refer to those as 'the good old days'. When collections first appeared, the focus shifted from people to stuff. Collections got a lot of space on the news feed and were suggested very heavily for follows.

I agree that G+ needed to focus a little more on stuff. Collections as a whole isn't a bad idea. However, there are some things that individuals and communities do better than collections. Communities do a better job of bringing people together around a topic they all enjoy. Individuals are better at creating hyper-local conversations about things between them and their followers.

Collections exist somewhere between that. I follow a wallpapers collection that I can never contribute to. There are no collections with a consistent presence of NHL news. The best use for collections that I've seen is when people put their stuff in different ones. Thus, if I don't want to listen to a tech blogger ramble about politics, I can unfollow their political rants collection and just see their normal stuff. They're like single-person communities and that phrase is an oxymoron.

I can handle collections existing. However, I think the over exposure of collections and the over emphasis on them created more harm than good. It was too far of a swing and it didn't balance well with the existing content and features of Google+. The "way it used to be" doesn't have to be the only way it has to be...but drowning it out entirely is also a bad idea. There's a middle ground. I believe Google+ should try to find it.

5. Some of the services that got ripped out of here were needed here
I agree with a lot of the services becoming their own platforms. Google Photos and Hangouts are better as individual platforms.

However, what I totally disagree with is that those platforms are no longer supported here. You can no longer have a hangouts tab open on G+. Google Photos is no longer directly integrated with Google+ (no more notifications about auto-awesomes). I still get Photos notifications when someone joins a collection, but if I want to see what the platform is doing any given day, I have to open the app. Another thing to check every day. Literally twice as much work for something that used to just take place here. Maybe that's the real sentence that matters. A lot of people could justify logging in and being active here because it allowed them to do engage with Google+ and do other Google things. I'll be honest, I signed in far less frequently when YT and Hangouts integration died. I could reply to YouTube comments and chat in Hangouts AND check Google+ AND do other stuff in one tab. Now I need 2+ tabs and a browser extension. Chrome eats too much RAM already, so G+ is usually the first tab that gets shut down.

But it's not just that. Being able to share YT videos by commenting on the YT video and clicking that "and also share on G+ box" was awesome. Being able to read and respond to YT comment replies in G+ was also pretty great (they're still there kind of but the functionality keeps getting scaled back and let's face it, it'll be gone soon).

Hangouts on Air wasn't being used much anymore, but when your focus is collections and not people, a drop in popularity for those kinds of platforms is expected. I remember joinable Hangouts being a fun activity around this time of night. Then those stopped, then people started doing fewer shows, then it was removed altogether. This also ties into the algorithm. How was open hangouts video chats supposed to succeed when nobody knew it was happening for potentially hours? Seriously, the algorithm ties into almost everything.

I'm not saying that these platforms had to be completely entwined with G+, but G+ used to be a really cool kind of hub for a lot of these other services. I feel like expanding on that a little bit would've been better than removing them altogether. Having a photos tab on G+ to sort through Google Photos, having the Hangouts functionality and YT functionality there. Hell, G+ could've added Google Now support. Open up http://plus.google.com and get the weather, news articles according to my interests, see my upcoming Google Calendar events, AND posts from individuals/collections/communities (in an order that makes sense for once)? Count me the hell in!

Long story short, Google+ was more dynamic and fun when it was connected to Google's other platforms and Google's other platforms were (at least a little) connected to G+. Especially if you consider the kinds of ridiculous things we could be doing in the alternate reality where G+ added to its feature set instead of subtracted (or tried goofy crap that didn't work, like Spaces. Ugh, so glad that's dead). I still think adding Google Now to G+ is a good idea. Let us check all of our Google notifications here. Just let the velvety blanket of Google wash over this place. It'll be fine.

Wrap up
The Google+ team hasn't done a horrible job with this place. However, many of us have noted how much less aggressive Google+ has been since Vic left the company a few years ago. Even if it's not the best change, any change at this point would be appreciated. Something to liven this place up. I believe most of the work will have to be done with incremental updates and user testing. However, the G+ team needs to come up with a couple of ideas, roll them out suddenly, and make a big deal about it.

In reality, I think the "good old days" that we long time members refer to are the days when G+ used to change in a meaningful way. Remember when auto-awesomes came out? And when Mr. Jingles got themed for holidays? Or when we could post giant emoji as our images to convey the emotion of our posts and new ones were added/removed all the time? Then there were things like late night Hangouts, circle shares, and that little box with trending hashtags that disappeared a while ago? Those were the "good old days". Everyone goofing around, posting stuff, talking to each other. Exploring new features, using them in our posts. It might not have been driving tons of new people in, but word of mouth was strong. There was ALWAYS something to do here. Now it's more of the same. "Shut up and scroll" lol. Yes, the topics these days are a little more serious (thank you politics, ugh), but Google+ used to be a moving, breathing creature that we had to re-learn and play with almost every other month. That was fun.

It reminds me a lot of how T-Mobile is now. Aggressive, not afraid of change, not afraid of bucking trends and trying new things. Big social presences and huge word of mouth. G+ was likes that. Bold, fast, and most importantly, different.

The good news is that based on activity I've seen in the last few days, the G+ seems to be listening and ready to start making some changes. I just hope that they're good changes.

I guess that's everything I have to say. I love it here and I don't want to leave. I'm probably not ever going to leave and will just roll with the punches however it turns out. I guess I'm just silly like that (insert giant tongue out emoji that Google+ took away from us)___This is pretty much in tune with the post I made a week or so ago.

As I have stated in other places, I did have a Hangouts with +Leo Deegan the other night and it was very promising and I feel there's sincerity in what he told me as far as the G+ team is working on things and that there are changes coming in the future.

I know +Carter Gibson has had a few things to say in comments on various posts as well and I believe between himself, Leo, +Leanne Osborne and the rest of the G+ team we're going to see those changes soon.

Posts like this matter folks, they truly do. As long as they are done correctly and for the right reasons and +Joseph Hindy has definitely achieved both.

I hope the G+ team will look at this post and take some of the things mentioned here into consideration as well as other things mentioned in my post and other similar posts.

In the end, I'm not leaving here either until I'm forced to leave. I hope we can get this place back to what it once was. While we won't get it back exactly, and I know +Joseph Hindy, myself and others know that, we could get it back to a place where it's fun again and where we see more of the things we want to see and care about.

I think that's it for me on this share of this post so I'll end this with a new hashtag I'm going to start using as much as possible for posts like this and other similar things. I hope you all will join me in doing the same thing.

So awesome to see this post made by the amazing +Leo Deegan earlier today.

I made a little post a week or so ago:

This post gained a lot of traction it seems and to see Leo post this today is super awesome. This lets me know that posts like mine, which Leo himself did comment on, along with +Carter Gibson, are being watched and read by the G+ team here on Google.

This alone reassures me that things are going to be happening and that the place that I call home away from home isn't dead, isn't going away and will only get better. While it might not happen tomorrow or next week, it's going to happen.

This is just the beginning folks. This place we love so much that Google named G+ is going to get some much needed love and some new tools and such to make it the best it can be and I literally can't wait for that to happen.

So to everyone on the G+ team, which I know a few of them but won't tag them personally, THANK YOU for showing us this transparency and I feel I speak for a lot of people here, that we appreciate you listening to us when we voice our opinions.

Got my free Google Photos book this morning. Normal pricing for a hardback book is $19.99 for 20 pages, and then .65 cents per additional page. But, with the free offer from Google I/O 2017, you can get the max pages which is 100 for free.

I ordered this on Sunday, and it's already been delivered. Good job Google on great service!

Our book that we got are all pictures from our trip to Las Vegas, since it was +Bianca Wade's first time ever on a plane and in Las Vegas.

Ask me anything: THE ANSWERS!

Do you use another launcher besides Nova?
Not as a daily driver and this isn't the case simply because I work for Nova. I've been using Nova since June 9th, 2012 and I pretty much switched to it full time about 6 months later. I was previously a Launcher Pro user and an Apex Launcher user, but my time with those were very short.

I do however have a long list of launchers installed on my device simply for testing purposes as there are often issues that come up that I have to check to see if other launchers do the same or whatever. So I am constantly changing between launchers but only for brief periods of time.

Do you like pizza? What topping?

Isn't it against the law to not like pizza? Pepperoni, cheddar and feta cheese, Italian sausage, chicken and of course, pineapple.

How did you start to join the Nova Launcher team, and did you do the work for nova from home or did you(Nova) have an office?
Such a great question! Prior to me there was a lady, Sols, who did customer support for Nova and she was leaving due to going to work for another company or something and Kevin put out a post on Google+ that he was looking to replace her.

I actually didn't see the original post by Kevin himself, but luckily saw it because Derek Ross shared it to his G+ stream. I read it over and thought to myself, let me give this a try since I have 27+ years of customer service/retail experience with 22+ of it in management. Throw in the fact that I did a lot of stuff for Mandrake/Mandriva Linux and their forums as well as helped run their official IRC channel back in the day.

I sent in my email, which Kevin will probably agree was quite lengthy, but I wanted to lay everything out on the table as far as experience. Couple of days later I got a response from him and we setup a Hangout On Air to do an interview. The HOA went very well, though I was so nervous simply because it was an interview and I had never done such thing via a HOA before. Again Kevin can probably confirm that I talked a LOT during that HOA, but in the end he offered me the position right away and I began working on November 2nd, 2015.
You can see Kevin's original post here:

https://plus.google.com/u/0/+KevinBarry/posts/9BPLXxJJf6J

I do all of my work from home, though it's funny as in the post he made he mentioned he'd ultimately like to have someone local to him in Chicago for various reasons but I don't live in Chicago as I live in Rome, GA. I guess all my talking paid off. :)

We don't have an office for Nova specifically, but if we ever do, it's been stated in customer responses to me via email that Kevin needs to supply me with donuts and coffee for the answers I provided them. Hoping that office gets built soon!

Do you play Ingress, and if so, what faction?
I don't play Ingress any longer. I did when it first came out and I was Enlightened. It was a great game early on but living in a super small town it got boring for me quickly unfortunately. Great to see this game still has a huge following and RIP Joe Philley as you were an amazing individual!

This question is bound to be asked so, what's your daily driver(phone) and do you go heavy with Nova customization or you keep it stock?
Currently my daily driver is the iPhone 7 Plus? Oh wait, sorry, that's not true at all. It's actually the Google Pixel XL and it's hands down the best Android device I've ever owned with the original Moto X right behind it in 2nd.

As far as customization, yeah, no, that doesn't really happen any longer. I will include a screenshot in the comments below of my current setup and you'll see it's pretty basic but in the end, it works for me for what I do.

What is your favourite Nova feature/features?
The ones I currently can't talk to you about. :) Seriously, I would have to say gestures and swipe to open.

Gestures allow you to do so many things that you normally can't do with an icon or a widget or that you can do from anywhere on the screen. How can this not be everyone's favorite feature of Nova?

Swipe to open lets me get rid of my app drawer button though I've had a setup without an app drawer for about 4 months and I still press that center dock icon at times thinking it's my app drawer button. :(

How did you end up working for Nova?
Luck, pure and simply luck as it wasn't for my good looks I can assure you. You can actually read that story above and confirm that it was luck and a lot of thanks to +Derek Ross #DerekRoss

And how does Kevin manage to continue this with such a small team? (So many devs have a huge team working for them.)
Unfortunately I'm not sure I could answer this as well as Kevin, so maybe we need to do an AMA with him here very soon...Thoughts?

What do you think about Android O? Do you like the new emoji?
I'm actually using Android O DP2 on my Pixel XL and absolutely loving it. I truly love what they have done with the look of the settings screens, the notification shade and similar things. The white background with black text to me really makes it look clean and crisp. While I know it's gotten a lot of hateful feedback from a lot of folks in my G+ stream, I like the direction they are headed. I can't wait to see what the final product is going to look like and of course how well it's going to run. It currently doesn't feel like a Developers Preview build as it already feels more polished.

The emjoi's are amazingly better in Android O. The blobs just weren't emoji's to me and never would have been. The new round emoji are much nicer looking and there seems to be added depth with the coloring and such that they have done. I vote yes to keep them!

I think Nova should be the default launcher for "stock" Android phones like Nexus, Pixel, or OnePlus. Of course, Nova can be too complicated for an average Joe user, but then Nova can just hide the complicated configurations under advanced/developer settings. My question is, why has Nova never cooperated with Google or OEMs to do so? Or, Nova could've just been acquired by Google, right?
Let me start by saying, this isn't really my area of expertise or even what I handle as far as my position with Nova. This would definitely be something that would be much better to be asked of Kevin.

With that said, my input is that there's a lot more to it than most people/users think when it comes to working with someone like Google for something like this. Could it happen? Sure, I guess it could, but the way it normally works is that Google just buys companies up that are smaller that they want the tech of or the people of.

Would I love to work for Google, sure I would. Who wouldn't? But in the grand scheme of things, I'm perfectly happy working with Kevin in the environment we currently work in as it just works for me personally as I'm guessing it does for him too.

Again, I would even love to hear how Kevin were to answer this question with regards to himself personally and with regards to Nova itself.

Nova doesn't give the possibility to use some Samsung Widgets like planner or weather. Why is that and how can it be activated in the future ? Third question is about Notifications : Teslaunread is of course from the same stable as Nova, but why isn't it build in in Nova, so why does a user needs a companion app to show counted Notifications ?
Samsung, Samsung, Samsung, why you do this stuff? Yeah, definitely a good question and one that I could rant about for a very long time since Samsung does some horrible things software wise especially with regards to how Nova works(or doesn't work at times) and especially from what Kevin tells me with regards to the coding side.

Short answer is, Samsung blocks a lot of their widgets from working in 3rd party launchers such as Nova. You can often verify this is the case by testing the same widgets within something like Action Launcher 3, Pixel Launcher or whatever and you'll see that 9 times out of 10 those same widgets won't be available in those launchers either.

That's unfortunate that it's like that and the answer to the second part of the question to go along with all of that is, contact Samsung. Ask them to please stop doing this. HTC was famous for doing it years ago, but they don't do it as much if at all now days. Samsung does it a lot, especially with weather widgets.
My other answer to this question, which will likely drive people to ask my "true thoughts" on the subject, don't buy anything from Samsung, period. :)

For the notification part of the question, I'll defer that to Kevin as well. He can tell you all about that and why it's like that or why it happened back in the time TeslaUnread was created.

Was there any Nova updates that caused you a PR nightmare? Any changes that people were unhappy about?
Nova is perfect, we don't make mistakes, right? Just kidding. Great question and in a way it's hard to define what a "PR nightmare" would be but I can think of something that didn't go over very well that wasn't a Nova update, but something that I did personally that I certainly learned from.

That was to never use the words "Big Announcement" again on social media, for any reason whatsoever. It was about us giving away 6,000 free icon packs as well as $200 in Google Play Store giftcards(one winner for the giftcard) and it wasn't taken very well by most people in the public as they felt they weren't getting much of anything.

Totally my fault and definitely something I've learned from and won't let happen again and in a lot of ways it really made me feel like I had failed, or let down Kevin and/or the company.

People don't like change majority of the time so there have been a lot of things. The most notable one for me since I've been working here is the weather in the search bar stuff. People still don't know it's something that doesn't work properly because it's broken on Google's end and that's the reason we had to move it to the Labs section of Nova Settings.

Users don't understand that this is something we wanted and still want to get working and to support, but unfortunately it doesn't look like that's going to happen any time in the near future.

You are stranded alone on a remote island. From your luggage you have salvaged one film, one piece of music/song and something important to you other than a family member or pet?
The first two things are dead easy for me to tell you. Film wise, Star Wars and I mean any of the first 7 films so far(not the spin off Rogue One). It doesn't matter which one as I'm a die hard fan of Star Wars. If I had to pick one of the seven, then I'd probably say I'd flip a coin between The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi.

For my one piece of music/song, that would be Livin On A Prayer by Bon Jovi. This is my favorite song of all time and has been since the day I first heard it back in August 1986, sitting in the back seat of the car, heading to the mall with my parents to pick up a new video game and while listening to the Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet CD. That song came on and it of course wasn't a released single yet as the cassette(yes, I'm showing my age) had just come out and I heard it and was hooked, instantly, for life. It spoke to me in a lot of ways at the age of 15 and still does to this day, as it's a song I listen to literally every single day of my life.

As for something important to me, I guess I'd have to take my magical genie lamp so I can finally activate it and, well, you know how that story goes. :)

Have you been with nova launcher since it's birth?
The first release or commit to Nova Launcher(notice my lack of coding and language expertise here) was done on December 13th, 2011 which was long before I went to work for them as I started November 2nd, 2015. As stated above, I began using Nova Launcher on June 9th, 2012, which was shortly after it first came about. Hard to believe I used my favorite launcher for 3+ years and then eventually came to work here. Definitely something I wouldn't have imagined if you had asked me 3+ years ago.

How many times was Nova Launcher and Nova Launcher Prime downloaded within the first month of its release?
Great question and enquiring minds certainly would like to know that. Unfortunately that would be something you'd have to ask Kevin as he has access to all of those stats(possibly) and it would be up to him to share that information.

How many members does the Nova Launcher team have?
There are 3 of us. Myself who handles all of the customer support and social media, Kevin who is the developer and owner/creator of the app and Raveesh who does our graphic design. However, Raveesh has just joined our team within the last couple of months as we lost Liam Spradlin to Google and he is the one responsible for the majority of how Nova looks today.

Kevin is a full-time developer as Nova is his job. He too works from home just like I do. That's all I'll say on that as it's best to ask him that question.
It's also worth mentioning our Google+ moderators who are not actual Nova employees but play a huge role in keeping the G+ communities in a sane manner for all of our users, Stephan Schwoebel, Stewart Souter and Ivan.

How is a normal day in your life?
Hectic? Crazy? Insane? Oh, wait, not exactly all of that.
A normal day for me with regards to Nova is to start my day by answering all the emails in the inbox that have arrived during the night while I was sleeping. I try to knock them all out as quickly as possible so I can do my personal life stuff. I may start at 9am, I might start at 11am, hard to say but somewhere around that time most every day.

I will have 40 - 150 emails by the time I wake up in the morning, just depending on if we're in beta, if there are known issues that aren't major enough to warrant an immediate update, but are known to have something broken. A good example of this is just a couple of beta's ago when you couldn't edit app shortcuts without Nova crashing. I would wake up to a lot of emails in the morning, but we knew it wasn't keeping everyone from using Nova at all, so we wanted to get a couple of other things fixed before that update.

After that, then I just do various things throughout the day but am always looking at the inbox and trying to answer emails as they come in. That's why there are often responses made to an email within only a couple of minutes of you sending them to us. Ever experienced that? :)

Then in the afternoons and evenings Kevin and I will of course speak throughout the day, talk about issues in the inbox that either I'm not sure about or things that need to be addressed within Nova as far as actual bugs or whatever. He and I are in constant contact with each other.

The weekends are pretty quite around the Nova chat until later at night as Kevin doesn't get online much during the day on the weekends and neither do I for the most part, but I'm still always monitoring the inbox. Customers are always first and the most important and I try to respond to every email as quickly as I can.
Oh, did I mention there's lots of video games each and every day? Can't forget my video games.

What's the future for Nova Launcher with Android specifically (Google)?
Definitely a great question but unfortunately one I can't give too much information on for various reasons.

Our goal, or the future of Nova is to be the best 3rd party launcher we can possibly be and give our users the features and options they want without making the app slow and laggy and without it ever feeling outdated.

We pay close to attention to what Google does with Pixel Launcher or whatever the current launcher is they are using and we listen to you, our users, even if we may not respond to certain things on social media.

We can't incorporate every feature or option that everyone wants into the launcher, but we certainly try our best to add the latest and greatest stuff when it makes sense. I can tell you that we are certainly very interested and looking at how we might can incorporate Dots and the new icon long-press menu within the app but beyond that I can't give any specifics as to what things we're working on for the future.

How long have you been with Nova?
As stated above, 1 1/2 years now and it's been the best time of my life because I get to deal with and answer questions from folks like yourself! :)

If launchers came to Chromebooks and Android TV, would Nova expand to those platforms. Five years on, if you were to start over and redesign the launcher from scratch, what aspect of Nova would you want to change the most?
Since I can't really answer that question as I don't know for sure what Kevin would do with Nova and those devices, I personally would hope so as I am a lover of my Chromebook!

I'll defer this to Kevin as well, but personally, can we not include weather in the search bar and not have Numeric Badges? What a nightmare on the support side of things, but at the same time it's what some would consider job security. Haha!

Did you know you deserve more credit?
Thank you for those kind words. We really do appreciate hearing things like that and it certainly motivates us to continue doing what we do to bring you the best app possible.

Will Nova Launcher get the new Android O app shortcuts?
I assume you are referring to the new icon long-press menu and as mentioned above, we are certainly interested in this new look and always thinking of ways we can implement the new look or something very similar.

When are full screen folders coming?
Let me start by saying that the definition of "full screen folders" is soemthing that everyone describes differently so I'm not 100% sure I can answer that. I can tell you, as we've been stating for a short period of time now, folders will be getting an overhaul in the near future. Unfortunately I can't say if it'll be with 5.2, 5.3 or further down the road in 6.0 or something else. Just know they are coming and I personally feel you'll like them once they are released because I enjoy them a lot more than what y'all currently have. :)

Are you going to introduce the Notification Dots from Android O?
You know I can't answer this question directly. :) You'll have to look around a bit here in the answers and see what you can put together.

Going to give everyone else a chance to see this as I know there are several of you that are possibly part of the Nova Launcher beta community that hasn't seen this and would love to get in on it.

Please comment only on the original post as questions here on this shared version of the post will NOT be answered.

GO GO GO !

Ask me anything today! Get answers tomorrow!

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Cliff Wade and I handle all of the customer support and social media for TeslaCoilSW, the company behind Nova Launcher.

What does that title/position mean exactly you ask? It means that if you email support for anything, I'll be the one to respond to you. I'm also the one who does majority of the posting of things on Google+ and from the @Nova_Launcher Twitter account. I'm not the developer, as that is all Kevin Barry and I'm not the graphics designer as that's all Raveesh Bhalla, though most of the current Nova design was done by Liam Spradlin.

This means that you see me in G+ a lot, responding to posts that are made within the beta community as that's where I spend a lot of my time since our community is so large, we have so many users and because that's where a lot of things take place with regards to the app itself.

For me personally, I like to be hands on with our users as much as possible. I love to interact with each of you and love to give you as much information as possible. Unfortunately there are a lot of things that I can't talk about due to us keeping things under wraps until we actually release it to the beta community.

So today what I want to do is open up an AMA (Ask Me Anything) to all of you. I want to try and give you some insights into who I am, what kind of things I like to do in my spare time, what my average day for Nova Launcher is like and so on.
Feel free to ask me anything you'd like, be it Nova Launcher related or not and all I ask is that you keep it clean, constructive and respectful. Please note that there will probably be things that I can't comment on specifically with regards to upcoming features and stuff. Some things I can comment on, some things I can't.

I will leave comments enabled on this post for a while to allow as many of you to get your questions in to me. At some point I will disable comments on this post as that will be the end of it. I will then take all of the questions and answer them as best as I can and to give you as much insight into myself and into Nova Launcher as I can. I will then post those answers in a post within the next day or so, hopefully the very next day if at all possible.

I hope you all enjoy this AMA and that y'all come up with some amazing questions as I look forward to telling y'all as much as I possibly can with regards to the things you ask.

This means that you see me in G+ a lot, responding to posts that are made within the beta community as that's where I spend a lot of my time since our community is so large, we have so many users and because... mehr »

When I was a little kid, life was all about Space Invaders and then a bit later Arkanoid was definitely a super fun game to play.

Today, Square Enix has mashed the two games together to give us Arkanoid VS Space Invaders for our Android devices.

Who's playing this?

I absolutely love my Google Pixel XL's that I have currently. I feel it's one of, if not, the best phones available today.

It's good to see that we're getting decently long support for this device, but now with it supporting Project Treble, we'll likely get even longer support for this device.

I'm certainly not a Yankee's fan in any way at all and in fact, I can't stand them. But there's no doubt they have produced some of the best baseball players ever to play the game including Derek Jeter.

Impressive stat that tonight once they officially retire Jeter's number that they will have retired all single digit jerseys. I'm pretty sure no other team can say that and have such a great list of names on the back of those jerseys.

Derek Jeter definitely deserves to be on this list as well as he's one of the greatest to play the game.

And interaction being "superb" is truly an understatement as this place was swarming with people who were posting all day, every day. People such as +Derek Ross(still active, just not as active), +Amanda Blain, +Trey Ratcliff(he still posts here quite a bit) used to post all the time, all day long to where you would see multiple posts in an hour at times from them and that was a good thing.

Fast forward to 2015, maybe early 2016 and things started changing here big time. Bots and spam were becoming much more prevalent and spam comments on posts were becoming more frequent each and every day it seemed.

Accounts with names that you could obviously tell weren't real were popping up everywhere and your follower counts either skyrocketed because of those bots/spam accounts, or they became stale and growth slowed way down or even stopped happening completely.

Late 2016

For some of us like myself who have been here since day one started to get a bit of realization, though we were strongly in denial that maybe those articles on all those sites about "Google+ Is Dead" were becoming more and more true each and every day.

Again fast forward a few months later into 2016 and of course take into consideration that Google Photos and Google Hangouts have both been removed from within G+ itself, and you can see G+ being used less and less by the people you used to interact with daily here. Those people have given up it seems. Maybe not completely but considerably enough that you might rarely see their posts in your stream anymore and this could be the case for days on end.

Personally I feel removing Google Photos and Hangouts was what really helped kill Google+. For Photos it was both a good thing for Photos itself, but a bad thing for G+. For Hangouts, well, we'll save that for another day as Hangouts is still nothing but a huge giant mess that needs to go away.

Google+ In 2017

So now here we are at G+ of today. It's had a massive redesign not long ago that is now what we are all forced to use. So many options and features are missing, communities are still quite troublesome to keep clean as a moderator or an owner and the spam is just crazy insane.

I'm talking crazy insane to the point that Google doesn't seem to care about it. It's not like they can't control it because they do a damn good job each and every day in our email that most of us have been using for much longer than we've been using Google+ itself.

Spam happens all day every day, more so than what +Derek Ross and +Amanda Blain used to post in a single day here, and back then that was a lot of useful information that those two alone were posting here.

During this major redesign that we recently had +Luke Wroblewski used to post on a very regular basis and keep us updated to what was going on with both the web client and the Android/iOS apps. Today, +Luke Wroblewski hasn't posted much of anything in weeks and I can't recall the last time he updated us about Google+ and what was going on.

With that said about Luke, I can now see why that doesn't happen as he has silently left the G+ team all together from what I've read. Again, back in the day, when Googlers changed positions or jobs and they were active here, we heard about it. They posted about it here because that was the thing to do. Googlers were VERY active here at one point in time and it was nice to see.

Another one to up and disappear and one that you really hear nothing much from any longer is +Natalie Villalobos whom I mentioned earlier. Back in the day if you had a problem and you mentioned here, it was pressing the bell at a hotel desk and she was there, assisting however she could or finding the right person who could assist you.

Another famous Googler to just up and disappear from here, +Bradley Horowitz. He hasn't posted anything in over 6 months yet he's supposed to be in charge of this place in some form or fashion, unless that has changed and we never heard about it either.

Then there are other folks such as +Carter Gibson +Leo Deegan +Yonatan Zunger who do post here quite often and that is actually quite satisfying to see. It would just be nice if there was more Googlers posting and we as users knew more of what was going on with this place and what's in store for the future, assuming there is a future left in/for Google+.

Now, let me make one thing clear. I've followed a lot of Google employees here on G+ over the beginning years, because as stated they were very active. I did it because they provided a wealth of information to all of us that was very much worth sharing for others who might have missed it. I didn't follow them just to try and be "cool" or because they were employees of the social network I enjoyed. I did it for a good reason and unfortunately that reason really doesn't exist much anymore except for the couple of folks I mentioned above.

What Happens Next?

So the question today is, what does Google have planned or in store for Google+ as a social media network that we as users grew to love literally overnight and at one point for a long period of time couldn't be productive at work due to having our tab open in our browser for G+.

Where does Google+ go from here? Is it going to die a slow death and just become a spam haven with nothing but fake accounts to the point where it's not worth being here any longer?

Will these folks like +Leo Deegan, +Yonatan Zunger +Carter Gibson or maybe others that I'm not familiar with or know much about do something to and with G+ to win us all back again and keep the blood flowing through the veins of what was in my opinion as well as millions of others, the best social media network on the entire internet?

It's sad that posts like this have to be typed up and the reason for mine was because I saw a post by +Artem Russakovskii this morning, you can read that post here: https://plus.google.com/+ArtemRussakovskii/posts/8mPgpdYn7uT and it really made me sit and think about my daily use of G+ and how it has changed over the past year or so.

+Artem Russakovskii happens to be someone I, and many others, really look up to as most of us know him for being the owner/founder of +Android Police and just an all around great guy. He's vocal about his opinions and he can be quite blunt at times and to me, that's important and I respect it.

So when I saw his post this morning it really hit home because every word he spoke is 100% true in so many ways that it's actually very sad.

I hope we don't lose people like +Artem Russakovskii but I don't feel like there's anything here that's going to stop us from doing so and that's very possibly because I'm in the same boat as he is and trying to decide how often I continue to use Google+.

One thing that certainly keeps me here is the fact that I work for Nova Launcher which is one of the best 3rd party launcher apps for Android, and we have 2 very large communities here that are very active. Because I handle all email support and social media related stuff, I am here for that by all means and am more than happy to be here for that as Nova has some awesome and amazing users and our communities are truly one of a kind.

Beyond that, what's here on Google+ for me after nearly 6 years(June 29th, 2011) of service and dedication? What can Google do to save this place though we all have ideas and suggestions that we can answer that question with. The real question is, WILL Google do anything to save this place, this place that so many of us have called "home" for so many years, this place where we've met and become really good friends with a lot of people along the way?

At this point, the ball is totally in Google's court and it's up to them if they just stand there and dribble, or do some assisting, passing and shooting to score a few points and head for the championship game.

I'm really curious to see where this post goes and if it simply falls on deaf ears, or will those folks like +Yonatan Zunger +Carter Gibson and +Leo Deegan step up and offer some information or insight of any kind at all?

I welcome anyone and everyone to comment on this post and to give your honest feedback and input and your thoughts on the future of Google+, the social networks of all social networks.

Thanks to +Tony C for posting this as I had a listen and this is absolutely AMAZING the way Dee Snider made this song sound so well as a slow, stripped down version.

This is a very interesting app by +Jack Underwood that could help a lot of people in various different ways.

I had the pleasure of voicing some thoughts and opinions on this app prior to its release and I'm definitely interested to see how well it's accepted and where it goes from here as I think it has a lot of potential especially with customer support type personnel like myself when it comes to Nova Launcher.

Introducing AppCam.IO

A tiny Android SDK that allows developers to easily request high quality screen recordings from users, just by sending them a link!

The SDK handles the requesting permission, actual recording, and the uploading of the video to an online dashboard along with various pieces off device info for the developer to review.

The SDK is only 50kb, requires zero permissions and has zero impact on device performance when it's not in use.

Developers can started with the single-line integration for free at https://appcam.io/

Phandroid.com's Android Forums app has been running the SDK for the last week, and goes into depth about why AppCam's quickly become an important tool in their development process below:
