Google has been experimenting with providing internet access via high-altitude (~80,000 feet) balloons. This could provide fast bandwidth to lots of parts of the world that don't have it. The latency would be much better than satellites, because the balloons are only ~15 miles up, while a satellite in geostationary orbit is 22,000+ miles up.

"Memorization is not the antithesis of creativity; it is absolutely indispensable to creativity. Creative insights come at odd and unpredictable moments, not when you have all the references spread out on the table in front of you. You can’t possibly hope to have creative insights unless you have memorized all the relevant information. And you can’t hope to have really creative insights unless you have memorized a vast amount of information, because you have no way of knowing what might turn out to be useful."
-- Professor Steve Dutch at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay

"A slide depicting the top-secret PRISM program.
The National Security Agency has obtained direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook, Apple and other US internet giants, according to a top secret document obtained by the Guardian.
The NSA access is part of a previously undisclosed program called PRISM, which allows officials to collect material including search history, the content of emails, file transfers and live chats, the document says."

US State Department criticizes Turkey for its repression of free speech. It couldn't be more ironic. #OccupyGezi http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/06/01/1213118/-Without-Irony-the-U-S-Rebukes-Turkey-for-Cracking-Down-on-Protesters …

"We believe that Turkey's long-term stability, security and prosperity is best guaranteed by upholding the fundamental freedoms of expression, assembly and association, which is what it seems these individuals were doing.
"These freedoms are crucial to any healthy democracy," [Department Spokesperson] Psaki added.

Occupy Flash Back
"The Global Block Collective has launched a follow up to its now-classic "Occupation Freedom." This new tune, "Occupy 2.0 - All Streets: The Bum Rush," features Occupy The Hood co-founder Malik Rhasaan and George Martinez, a founder of Global Block Foundation and a New York Congressional candidate who is forwarding an Occupy agenda. Occupy Wall Street fixtures, including Sgt. Shamar Thomas, Lauren DiGioia and the Tax Dodgers, make cameos."

Turkish Rebel in 90 Seconds
Message attached to video: "After a series of peaceful demonstrations for preserving a recreational area in Istanbul city center which is planned to demolished for the construction of a shopping mall, Turkish police attacked the protesters violently with tear gas and water cannon, directly targeting their faces and bodies. Dozens of protesters are hospitalized and access to the park is blocked without any legal basis. Turkish media, directly controlled by the government or have business and political ties with it, refuse to cover the incidents. Press agencies also blocked the information flow."
Message attached to video: "Please share this message for the world to become aware of the police state created by AKP of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which is often considered to be a model for other Middle Eastern countries. Turkish democracy expects your ... mehr »

Former New York Times journalist Chris Hedges says that the U.S. government is setting a "terrifying" precedent with its intrusion into the phone records of the Associated Press. Hedges states, "I can't understand the inability of the traditional press to grasp that we are now in the last moments of an effort to effectively extinguish press freedom."

Public Broadcast Should Be Public Domain
The video we shared was broadcast on Dutch public television in 1971. The production itself was paid for by Dutch taxpayers and made possible entirely by the creative input of two of the world’s most staunchly anti-capitalist thinkers, whose intellectual product was subsequently alienated by producer Fons Elders (a “professed anarchist” who also acted as the incapable moderator of the debate) and appropriated by international companies that did nothing to make the debate possible. Now the entire world is barred from seeing it just because this company owns an exclusive legal right to its distribution in North America.
Copyright hides and destroys culture.

CISPA is Dead, Kinda
I'm testing out Google's new feature on Blogger that allows G+ comments to be added to the blogs.
What better way to test it, than to say something about CISPA.
Basically, CISPA is supposedly dead in the Senate, but I'm not convinced that it will stay that way. Part of me wants to celebrate, but then I remember that this zombie is going to come back to life.

Jeffrey Sachs, Columbia economist, has been meeting with Wall Streeters for years, and he doesn't have anything positive to say about them.
In a speech this week, he spoke his mind. His words should reinforce our drive for reforming a system that is so corrupt as this.
***
"I meet a lot of these people on Wall Street on a regular basis right now, and I'm going to put it very bluntly: I regard the moral environment as pathological. And I'm talking about the human interactions that I have. I've not seen anything like this, not felt it so palpably.
These people are out to make billions of dollars, and "nothing should stop them" from that. They have no responsibility to pay taxes, they have no responsibility to their clients, they have no responsibility to counterparties in transactions. They are tough, greedy, a... mehr »

Could the US be upset at a failed coup?

The difference seems to be-- In Mexico, the right winger won, but in Venezuela the left did.

This girl is getting attacked for standing up to principles
But it didn’t end with a simple difference of opinion among Campbell and her principal. The high school senior alleges that Aulenbacher threatened to call Wellesley College, where Campbell has been accepted to study in the fall, after she spoke to the press about her objections to the assembly. According to Campbell, her principal said, “How would you feel if I called your college and told them what bad character you have and what a backstabber you are?” Campbell alleges that Aulenbacher continued to berate her in his office, eventually driving her to tears. “He threatened me and my future in order to put forth his own personal agenda and make teachers and students feel they cant speak up because of fear of retaliation,” she said of the incident.

Rep. Mike Rogers Claims That Opponents of CISPA are 14 Year Olds in Basements. Lets prove him wrong. - [1:07]

Rep. Rogers is adamant that no sensitive personal information or email content will be collected under the bill and then sent to the federal government. Under questioning from Rep. Polis, Rogers said "Again, zeroes and ones, hundreds of millions of times a second, in patterns. It has nothing to do with content. Nothing."
First of all, of course it's zeros and ones. That's how information is passed in the digital environment--whether it is content or not. If Rogers is going to propose fundamentally changing privacy on the Internet, he ought to know that the contents of email are transferred with zeros and ones in patterns.
Second, if Rogers really meant this, there is an easy solution. Exclude the content of communications from the bill. Voila! Companies would not be able to transfer the content of anyone’s email under the bill, whether in the form of zeros and ones, o... mehr »

Big Banks Merging Into A Corrupt Oligopoly.
One of the most frightening aspects of society today is how much control the banking giants have over not just America, but the world. Through a conservative scheme of deregulation, killing enforcement of regs, and ignoring anti-trust laws, banks have tightened their tyrannical grip over the financial system in the US.
+Mother Jones (who designed the chart below) reports: The nation's 10 largest financial institutions hold 54 percent of our total financial assets; in 1990, they held 20 percent. All the while prosecutions for fraud by the #banksters has been slashed to 1/3rd of what it once was.
This isn't just an #Occupy issue. This isn't just a #progressive issue. This is a community and small business issue that everyone needs to be concerned about. Don't let the #banks run our lives!
