Janet Echelman is an artist who builds some of the most beautiful and permanent outdoor installations seen around the world. When she was first approached to create a permanent structure in Madrid, Spain, she was challenged to create very large structural forms (think skyscraper) using her preferred medium, soft fabric.  In order to tackle the twin challenges of precise shape and gentle movement,  she turned to HPC. Her team created a software that would allow her to extrude the complex net forms of her art and model them with gravity and movement before creating the actual piece.

Menger Sponge

This beautiful animated Gif, created by Reuben Thomas (http://www.functor.co/), is circulating on G+ without  significant information about what it is.

Let's see what it is.
It's Menger sponge, a particular 3D fractal, described for the first time in 1926 by Karl Menger, while he was exploring the concept of topological dimension. Menger sponge is the three-dimensional extension of the Cantor set and Sierpinski carpet.

The Menger sponge simultaneously exhibits an infinite surface area and encloses zero volume.

How it is constructed

According to Wikipedia, the construction of a Menger sponge can be described as follows:
1. Begin with a cube.
2. Divide every face of the cube into 9 squares, like a Rubik's Cube. This will sub-divide the cube into 27 smaller cubes.
3. Remove the smaller cube in the middle of each face, and remove the smaller cube in the very center of the larger cube, leaving 20 smaller cubes. This is a level-1 Menger sponge (resembling a Void Cube).
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each of the remaining smaller cubes, and continue to iterate ad infinitum.
The second iteration will give you a level-2 sponge, the third iteration gives a level-3 sponge, and so on. The Menger sponge itself is the limit of this process after an infinite number of iterations.

Koch curve is one of the earliest fractal curves of which you are familiar with a description. It appeared for the first time in a document of 1904 entitled Sur une sans courbe continuous tangent, obtenue par une construction géométrique élémentaire from the Swedish mathematician Helge von Koch.

The construction of Koch curve is done by repeating execution of a  instruction program or recursive procedure.The algorithm of the curve is the repetition of the cycle below:
1.starting from a segment of given length, divide the segment into three equal segments;
2. clear the central segment, replacing it with two identical segments which are the two sides of an equilateral triangle;
- return to step 1 for each of the current segments.

Starting from a segment, you get then four (constituting a broken line) in the first cycle, 4x4 = 16 in the second cycle and so on, generating an elegant fractal. Zooming in any detail the fractal, you still get the same fractal: this is the self similarity of fractals at any level of scale.

Mathematics is Beauty

"Mathematics is Beauty" is a statement that could cause some perplexity in those who don't have a good relationship with the queen of Sciences  and perhaps  arouse the ironically skeptical jokes of the unfortunate ones who have not penetrated its fascinating essence! 

According to Bertrand Russell:
"Mathematics, rightly viewed, possess not only truth, but supreme beauty- a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without recourses to the weaknesses of our nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, but of a sublime purity and capable of a pure perfection such as only  highest art can reach."

Galaxies Collide

Galaxies collide with this OpenCL physics simulation. A total of 32,768 stars mutually interact via Newtonian gravitational attraction in a simulation which steps from 2 to 5 billion years in the future. Watch for the galaxies to collide just before the 4 billion year point. The simulation and the screen updating proceed in separate streams on an NVIDIA GT 650M GPU, at over 2 billion floating point operations per second on a laptop. Based on the Mac Developer OpenCL sample here:

Oxidized fibers moving towards the high temperature furnace where a carbonization process results in carbon fiber. Low cost acrylic fibers first pass through four low temperature oxidation ovens, turning from white, to yellow, to auburn, to brown, and then black as they become fully oxidized. The image shows these oxidized fibers moving towards the final high-temperature furnace where they become carbon fibers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Carbon Fiber Technology Facility. Less expensive starting materials such as lignin are being explored.  Reducing the cost of carbon fibers is important for many industries (wind turbines, aerospace, automobile, ...) which need such very strong, lightweight materials.
