Hi. I'm a violinist and a software developer.

Of the past year I've built and kept The Global Map of Musicians alive. It's all about helping musicians find a teacher, start a group, promote their music, share a gig and trade gear locally.
www.musomap.com

Coming up in April this year I am hosting my first ever Musomap event.

World Musician Day - a day for neighbouring musicians to come together and perform for one another. I've recently been given the funds to put on a launch event in Sydney. 2013 is in Sydney. 2014 is in every major city around the world.
www.worldmusicianday.com

Please take a look at my project and share it with the musicians you know. If you would like to help me share this project, in order to encourage more local music collaboration, please get in touch!

Wishing you an awesome day of creativity...

Using the Internet and Social Media the Right Way
Over the last year and a half I have met some really great musicians here on Google+. I would like to take this opportunity to mention one of my favorite bands on Google+ and comment on what they're doing right.

1. Engagement: Unlike many musicians on social networks, +Moonalice engages and interacts with everyone on a variety of topics, while at the same time they make it very easy to find their music. Prioritizing engagement and diversity of content over massively distributing their own music is an approach that more musicians should follow.

2. Sharing for free can go a long way: +Moonalice takes sharing to the next level. For example, they stream all of their live shows for free (see www.moonalice.com for links). The combination of engagement on social platforms and sharing live shows is a recipe forsu... mehr »

Join us for another Science HOA, brought to you by +ScienceSunday as we talk to Dr +Jon Hiller about electron microscopy! Jon is a electron microscopist in the Nanoscience & Technology Division at Argonne National Laboratory. Jon’s research includes the development of state-of-the-art electron and ion beam instrumentation for materials and nanoscale research. He is most well known for his work in 3 dimensional Focused Ion Beam (FIB) tomography and complex sample fabrication for electron microscopy. His characterization of diamond thin films has lead to the development of the artificial retina.

We will be discussing all this, along with a live on air demonstration of scanning electron microscopy! Jon has also kindly offered to allow you, the audience to choose any objects that you would like to see under the electron microscope! So if you have any questions for Jon, or suggestions fors... mehr »

1. Implantable Wireless Diagnostic Chip.
An implantable diagnostic system has been developed that measures just 3 cubic millimeters in volume and yet packs in five sensors, a radio transmitter and a power delivery system http://actu.epfl.ch/news/under-the-skin-a-tiny-laboratory/. The device is designed to be implanted under the skin, measure the concentration of substances in blood - one sensor per substance (protein or organic acid), transmit this to a battery patch placed on the skin that provides inductive power, and then via bluetooth to the patient’s mobile phone. The limited lifetime of six weeks is adequate for most applications and removing the old and replacing with new iss... mehr »

Mapping a Living Brain, Neuron by Neuron

It looks like an oddly shaped campfire, but it is activity of individual neurons across a larval fish brain. It is the first time that researchers have been able to image an entire vertebrate brain at the level of single cells.

Brain function relies on communication between large populations of neurons across multiple brain areas, a full understanding of which would require knowledge of the time-varying activity of all neurons in the central nervous system. Here we use light-sheet microscopy to record activity, reported through the genetically encoded calcium indicator GCaMP5G, from the entire volume of the brain of the larval zebrafish in vivo at 0.8 Hz, capturing more than 80% of all neurons at single-cell resolution. Demonstrating how this technique can be used to reveal functionally defined circuits across the brain, we identify... mehr »

The Return of the Super Science Circle

Okay, I'll admit, I made a mistake in retiring the Super Science Circle. I wasn't wrong; Communities are still the future and the best way to make friends here on Google+. But I realized that the Super Science Circle is simple and efficient way to get new people to see that Google+ isn't a ghost town.

PLEASE SHARE THIS POST... FOR SCIENCE!

When I was attending +ScienceOnline 2013, I must have helped dozens of people join Google+, and the first thing I had them do was import this circle. It's an invaluable tool for getting new people up to speed.

So, I just did a complete refresh on the circle. I examined every single member and judged them according to my two-part criteria:

1. Active in the last 30 days or so.
2. Regularly post on scientific topics.

Study Shows How Vitamin E Can Help Prevent Cancer
Researchers have identified an elusive anti-cancer property of vitamin E that has long been presumed to exist, but difficult to find. Many animal studies have suggested that vitamin E could prevent cancer, but human clinical trials following up on those findings have not shown the same benefits. In this new work, researchers showed in prostate cancer cells that one form of vitamin E inhibits the activation of an enzyme that is essential for cancer cell survival. The loss of the enzyme, called Akt, led to tumor cell death. The vitamin had no negative effect on normal cells. “This is the first demonstration of a unique mechanism of how vitamin E can have some benefit in terms of cancer prevention and treatment,” said lead author Ching-Shih Chen, professor of medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy at The Ohio State University and an investigatorin ... mehr »

Maximize Audience Without Destroying Your Profile
A lot of people are destroying their Google+ profiles by sharing the same post to multiple communities. Not only does this add a lot of redundancy to your profile (i.e., duplicate posts) but you are also making your posts ineligible for What’s Hot. Here’s a simple tip to maximize your audience without killing your profile.

1. Change your personal settings by unchecking “Show your Google+ communities posts on your profile” (see left pic).
2. Share your post publicly (this makes your post eligible for What’s Hot).
3. Then re-share your public post to relevant communities.

Using this strategy will: (a) only show one post on your profile, as opposed to showing many duplicate posts, (b) show the share count on a single post, rather than being scattered across multiple posts, and (c) keep your post eligible forwhat’s ho... mehr »

The Science of Beer
This is a great song about the science of beer (see lyrics below). Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Lyrics:
In the year of our lord eighteen hundred and eleven
On March the seventeenth day
I will raise up a beer and I'll raise up a cheer
For Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Here's to brewers yeast, that humblest of all beasts
Producing carbon gas reducing acetaldehyde
But my friends that isn't all -- it makes ethyl alcohol
That is what the yeast excretes and that's what we imbibe

Anaerobic isolation
Alcoholic fermentation
NADH oxidation
Give me a beer

[CHORUS]

My intestinal wall absorbs that ethanol
And soon it passes through my blood-brain barrier
There's a girl in the next seat who I didn't think that sweet
But after a few drinks I want to marry... mehr »

Chimpanzees outperform humans in short term memory tests.

Very interesting clip to watch.

While chimpanzees can easily remember the place of 10 digits, humans struggle to do more than 6.

Take this test and see if you can do better than this monkey ?
http://games.lumosity.com/chimp.html

Thanks to +al pistacchio for providing the link to one of the tests. In the lumosity version of one of the tests, there are only 5 numbers to memorize and that's pretty difficult. As you can see in the clip, the chimpanzee can do it even with 10.

How did you do on this test ?

Baked Hard "Boiled" Eggs
Just preheat the oven to 325 degrees, and arrange your eggs in a muffin tin. Bake the eggs for 30 minutes. Remove them from the oven and immediately submerse them in ice water for about 10 minutes. Source: http://goo.gl/kgdrp

I will definitely have to try this! According to this page (http://goo.gl/gPtLb), the whites have a different texture (e.g., they're not rubbery) and the eggs are easier to peel.

I See the World with Science! Image Competition
#ISeeTheWorldWithScience
Here's a photo of a monkey. Isn't it adorable? Normally you'd just see an adorable monkey, some ruins and maybe wonder why he's trying to get past the photographer. Maybe he's trying grab some food or chase another monkey**.

But how much more can we see with science?
If you see something more, add a one sentence description in the comments. It should be short, clear and very sciency. (See some suggestions below)

The more creative, surprising or unexpected the better. But it needs to be something based on actual science. Don't just say the trees are green, explain why they're green.

The winner will be mostly determined by the +1's on your description by others. The winning description will be added to the image and posted separately onou... mehr »

Oldest Biomolecules Isolated Directly from a Fossil
Though scientists have long believed that complex organic molecules couldn't survive fossilization, some 350-million-year-old remains of aquatic sea creatures uncovered in Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa have challenged that assumption. The spindly animals with feathery arms—called crinoids, but better known today by the plant-like name “sea lily”—appear to have been buried alive in storms during the Carboniferous Period, when North America was covered with vast inland seas. Buried quickly and isolated from the water above by layers of fine-grained sediment, their porous skeletons gradually filled with minerals, but some of the pores containing organic molecules were sealed intact.

New Coal Technology Harnesses Energy Without Burning
A new form of clean coal technology reached an important milestone recently, with the successful operation of a research-scale combustion system at Ohio State University. “In the simplest sense, combustion is a chemical reaction that consumes oxygen and produces heat,” Fan said. “Unfortunately, it also produces carbon dioxide, which is difficult to capture and bad for the environment. So we found a way to release the heat without burning. We carefully control the chemical reaction so that the coal never burns—it is consumed chemically, and the carbon dioxide is entirely contained inside the reactor.”

Cognitive Science Models HOA's
I am teaching an undergraduate Introduction to Cognitive Science course at The Ohio State University Newark, and I blocked off three days (2/7, 2/12, and 2/14) to talk about modeling. My original plan was to build very simple connectionist networks during this time; however, I think my students and the general community would benefit more by hearing about different types of networks and models.

My plan is to round up cognitive scientists for two or three sessions to discuss the following issues in a Hangout On Air:

1) General theories underlying the various models (e.g., symbolic vs. sub-symbolic, supervised vs. unsupervised, etc.)
2) Brief presentation of your model (presented at the undergraduate level)
3) Online tutorial of software (e.g., how do you build a model in ACT-R, Emergent, SANlab- CM, etc.?)

Light in the womb controls eye development
Proper brain development is highly dependent upon sensory experiences in early life. From the minute you are born, the light entering your eyes began to tune the responses of cells in your visual cortex and shaped the overall growth of your visual pathways. And your parents' cuddles and caresses drove the development of your somatosensory system, the pathway that detects touch and pain. Now a team of American researchers provides evidence that sensory experiences before birth play an important role in development of the eye. In a series of experiments performed on mice, they found that light in the womb regulates the growth of blood vessels and the number of neurons in the retina. The findings, published last week in the journal Nature (http://goo.gl/Z3ZAS), could improve our understanding of eye diseases that can cause blindness in premature... mehr »
