For some reason the onboard eMMC didn't show up in the boot menu, but this is major, major progress.

Believe it or not, this is the first shot you're likely to have seen of SeaBIOS running on a Baytrail Chromebook. Thanks to +Liam Crabbe for having the guts to brick his ASUS C300 (because the keyboard doesn't work, yet) in pursuit of it.

I don't know if this means the poop is going to hit the rotating aerofoils today, or even next week, but it certainly does sound like the beginning of the end for Greece in the Euro.

Jeroen Dijsselbloem, head of the eurogroup, has just arrived in Brussels. He tells reporters that:

I am very negatively surprised by today’s decision by the Greek government They have apparently rejected the final proposals from the Institutions.

Dijsselbloem is also unimpressed that the Greek government is recommending rejecting the proposal:

That is a sad decision for Greece, for it has closed the door on future talks.

I've looked at a couple of IoT companies' websites for job applications, and the thing that struck me is I couldn't easily find out what the hell it is they do. When you finally wade through all the crap you find (a good one) might have produced an underpowered MIPS board and have a digital radio service (along with "API's"). All the puff and bluster just seems to be a good way of justifying and spending the ill-gotten investment they've received, and possibly justifying more investment down the toilet. 10/10 for creating a frenzy around the term, but I find it highly unlikely investors really understand what these companies are and are not doing.

The thing that really surprises me about this, is that the court is showing real teeth against a custodial parent who is, to all intents and purposes, practising Parental Alienation Syndrome.

Is this a precedent? Will all UK courts follow suit? Is routinely letting damaging mothers away scot free in the UK at an end?

I appear to have screwed something up.

I was messing around with my son's HP Pavilion Chromebook, creating ROMs by just replacing the payload in the shellball ROM, flashing them, and now the wireless card won't work outside of ChromeOS. Fedora reports that I'm in "airplane" mode with "hardware disabled" and even Jeltka says "hardware blocked". I'm not a big fan of ChromeOS, so, anyone got any ideas as to what I can do to re-enable it?

A few people, mainly "free" software types have asked me to start using GPG/PGP. To that I say this - apart from the reasons in the attached article - GPG/PGP doesn't ensure your good standing, only the "part" you're currently playing. In terms of downloads, it does nothing to ensure that I'm not implanting things into the ROM's. There's a tacit assumption of trust which doesn't have any reasonable basis, and it's misleading to pretend otherwise.

Ben asked me what my favourite childrens TV programme was. We watched a bit of this and then he said "Why is kids TV so bad these days?". Why indeed, Ben, why indeed ...

The other thing that struck me was the way the makers really missed a trick with merchandise. I would've loved an X-Bomber or especially Dai-X more than life itself.

There was nothing else that had this level of craft and detail, looking back you could tell the maker was a Manga god.

Cutting through the Irish marriage referendum whitewash

That the Irish people, as a whole, voted for marriage equality is undoubtedly a positive thing. But, I feel it's important to offer some balance to the current all-pervading, self-congratulatory adulation and back-slapping going on.

1. A 12.5% margin is not a landslide in a vote with only two choices.

2. Although the majority of urban conurbations voted in and around 70%, the majority of rural areas were in the mid to low 50's, which is how we ended up with the figure in 1.

3. If Roscommon didn't already have a bad enough reputation, it's ignominy and intolerance as the only county in the country to flatly say no to the proposal will weigh heavily on the county for years to come.

That the Irish people, as a whole, voted for marriage equality is undoubtedly a positive thing. But, I feel it's important to offer some balance to the current all-pervading, self-congratulatory adulation and back-slapping going on.

3. If Roscommon didn't already have a bad enough reputation, it's ignominy and intolerance as the only county in the country to flatly say no to the proposal will weigh heavily on the county for years to come.

4. All of the above illustrate why living "beyond the pale" (in it's original, and literal sense) is a generally bad idea.

Figures relating to the above points can be found @ http://www.thejournal.ie/constituency-count-same-sex-marriage-referendum-2120378-May2015/

5. Although we are now affirmed as a bastion of gay rights, being gay in Ireland is still a dangerous state to live in, even in the "enlightened" cities.

http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/warning-over-homophobic-catfish-attacks-313132.html

6. Senator David Norris is a very charming and in many ways right-thinking person, who has done an enormous amount for the gay community in his personal battles with homophobia. But, he is certainly no god amongst people, as he is currently being portrayed in all this coverage. He abused his position of power to use parliamentary headed note paper to plead for clemency for an ex-boyfriend who was convicted of paedophilia in Israel. This is a position comparable to the church sweeping child abuse by it's priests under the carpet, and makes Norris a paedophile apologist. To my knowledge, he has not expressed any regret towards the position he took.

http://www.thejournal.ie/leaked-seanad-letters-show-norris-sought-clemency-for-former-partner-report-190021-Jul2011/

It's a good result no doubt, but can we please keep our feet on the ground and an objective head?___

My take on Mad Max: Fury Road - possible spoiler alert

Summary: Beautifully choreographed, theatrical, road-violence.

The good: Very well made. Similar feel to the original films. I very much liked the subtle environmental message and plethora of powerful female characters (without being preachy), and found that truly original. All but a few side-show characters have visible vulnerability, which was again refreshing. Charlize Theron was very good, and I can understand why her character will be expanded upon in the following film. The action and machinery is, of course, epic, and reaches the level of art in of itself.

The not so good: This is the worst performance I've seen from Tom Hardy. His accent is weird, which I suppose works from the point of view of audience ambiguity (which means more people will potentially identify with the film).... mehr »

His accent is weird, which I suppose works from the point of view of audience ambiguity (which means more people will potentially identify with the film). However, he is too laconic/taciturn, and needed more dialogue. Can't help feeling Max's character is a dinosaur, which possibly explains why he won't feature so much in the next film(s). At no point in the entire film did any of the tyres on the rig get blown out. In Mad Max II, that was one of the first things the baddies went for (for obvious reasons). Consequently, the entire film doesn't hold up well in the believability stakes. The plot is thin, and there's even less dialogue than the aforementioned Mad Max II. Perhaps I'm becoming a fuddy duddy, but I feel Mad Max II is still a better film, overall.

The Irish Film Classification Office gave this film a 15A rating. I feel a 12A would've been more appropriate - there is no swearing, full frontal nudity, graphic violence (i.e. people losing limbs). Not sure what other territories classify it as, but it should be something that fathers and tweenies (or above) can reasonably happily go and see together. Alex liked it.___

Attention Baytrail owners

Would one of you please try out the CBFS below - it's designed for Chromebook firmware which use native VGA init, like the Baytrail devices. No risk of bricking.

<cough> I've somehow managed to appropriate a Yuna with a German keyboard (don't ask), and I can't think of a single really compelling reason why I should do a complete custom firmware when the updated CBFS is "enough". Further more, as my firmware has "idiosyncrasies", this is reason not to do it. If anyone wants to convince me, please try?

So, in addition to using SeaBIOS 1.8.1 instead of the ToT branch of ChromiumOS SeaBIOS, which won't work for me (thanks Matt for giving me that to plagiarise), I've also put a really dodgy goto statement in which prints the menu options again, if you happen to hit ESC again, ad infinitum. This CBFS should work on all Broadwell devices, and, who knows, it may even work on Baytrail (although I'm pretty sure it still won't recognise the eMMC).

Please try it and let me know how it murdered your family. :)

Apply it using "flashrom -w -i RW_LEGACY:seabios-auron-240415.cbfs" in ChromeOS. ___Attention Baytrail owners

Would one of you please try out the CBFS below - it's designed for Chromebook firmware which use native VGA init, like the Baytrail devices. No risk of bricking.
