I am getting more and more disgusted.  Are we seeing the pattern yet?  Every time our fellow citizens or children get slaughtered by another gun loving  head case, we are told we shouldn't talk about it and we are letting our emotions get the better of us.   Then we are told if only more people had guns in wherever the shooting occurred - schools, churches, whatever, then every thing would be fine.  Now I suppose, people should all carry guns when they go to the movies so there can be shootouts in dark theaters.

I realized I was somewhat hesitant to post about this partly out of fear.  Call me a coward if you want, but a few days ago, someone here who uses a gun as his profile picture was posting some unhinged stuff on one of my posts, and when I looked at his profile he posted about how much he likes to parade around the shopping mall with his gun, and bragged that he even gotin an ... mehr »

You know, when I was in college and early in my career, people knew that jobs in engineering were cyclical.   That seems to have been long forgotten in this new economy where we are told the only people of value are engineers and programmers.  The cycle has been longer this time, but it still exists, and engineers aren't immune to unemployment as many have said.

The Silicon Valley Tech industries claim that "they can't find qualified Americans" is a total sham.   They wanted low cost "indentured servants" who are cheap and easily controlled.   The layoffs and hiring freezes that seem to be happening again pretty much destroys those claims.

Tech industry's persistent claim of worker shortage may be phony

There's no "may be" about it.  The phoniness of the claimed shortage dates back many years.

50 years later, the mystery gets solved.

Today I Found Out

The 1966 Death of Paul McCartney

For a couple of months in the fall of 1969, a persistent rumor that Paul McCartney had been killed two years earlier and replaced with a look-alike captured the imaginations of Beatles fans and the general public.

The rumor began in the winter of 1967 when, after a particularly icy night, reports were flying among Britain’s national press that Paul had been killed in a car crash on January 7, 1967. The tale was reported in the February issue of The Beatles Monthly Book (#43) under the heading of “False Rumour,” and with a denial from the Beatles’ press office. In fact, it claimed that neither Paul nor his black Mini Cooper had even left the house that day.

Fast-forward to September 1969, about one week before the release of Abbey Road (9/26/69), when the student newspaper of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa ran the story Is Beatle Paul McCartney Dead? In the article, which is written in the same style with which today’s Ancient Aliens posits its wildest theories, Tim Harper opined that Paul “may indeed be insane, freaked out, even dead.”

Harper supported the statement by examining Beatle’s album covers and lyrics, and pointed to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (6/1/67) where he found two mysterious symbols (a hand over Paul’s head and what is conjectured to be “an ancient death symbol”), a left-handed guitar that “lies on the grave at the group’s feet,” (Paul was the only lefty), on the back cover Paul is the only one not facing the camera, and in the centerfold Paul is the only one wearing a black arm band.

Continuing with the examination, Harper looked at the walrus of The Magical Mystery Tour (11/27/67) (revealed to be Paul in 1968’s Glass Onion), which, at least according to Harper, was a Viking symbol of death. And then turning his attention to The Beatles (11/28/68), he reported that playing Revolution No. 9 backward produced phrases about death.

It’s not clear if Harper was kidding or not with his story, but it certainly captured the imagination of the country. By October 1969, the Beatles press office was flooded with questions about Paul’s health, and on October 12, 1969, DJ Russ Gibb of WKNR-FM in Detroit, Michigan moderated a full hour of an impromptu discussion of the topic with listeners who were calling in.

Inspired, Fred LaBour, a University of Michigan natural resources student and reporter with its student newspaper, Michigan Today, who was assigned to review the recently released Abbey Road, penned a satirical piece titled McCartney Dead; New Evidence Brought to Light on October 14, 1969. Unfortunately, many people failed to realize he was kidding.

In a 2009 article, LaBour admitted that he had pulled all of his alleged “clues” out of his hat, but because so many didn’t realize he was joking at the time, several of LaBour’s creations became part of the “Paul is Dead” lore. These include that the lyric “the walrus was Paul,” really means “the corpse was Paul,” with LaBour claiming “walrus” is Greek for “corpse,” and that Paul was replaced with “a Scottish orphan named William Campbell.”

LaBour also claimed that letters on Paul’s black arm band from Sgt. Pepper’s, OPD, stood for the British equivalent of DOA (and meant “Officially Pronounced Dead”), and that Paul’s bare feet on the Abbey Road cover signified that he was a corpse. LaBour also noted that Paul was smoking right-handed, a sure sign that this was an imposter.

Within a week, the rumor, which now contained several of LaBour’s fabrications, had reached the national media. On October 21, 1969, the story was examined on New York’s WABC which was picked up (at least at that time) in 38 states. By now, the alleged crash was claimed to have occurred on November 9, 1966, after Paul had angrily left a Beatles recording session. In addition, at some point, rather than William Campbell, some people were saying “Billy Shears,” was Paul’s replacement, due to the lyric in Sgt. Pepper’s.

Although the Beatles’ press office continued to deny the rumor as “a load of rubbish,” for many the rumor lived on, even after Paul did an interview with Life on November 7, 1969.

It all worked out for Paul and the Beatles though, as a result of the rumor, Beatles’ albums sales increased significantly and both Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Pepper’s re-entered Billboard’s top album charts.

At the end of November 1969, LaBour participated in a “cross-examination,” televised on New York’s WOR, that was hosted by F. Lee Bailey and which analyzed the rumor. When LaBour admitted to Bailey before the show that he had made up his “facts,” Bailey reportedly said, “We have an hour of television to do; you’re going to have to go along.” So, he did.___50 years later, the mystery gets solved.

Small Business Services RFI.   Hi all, here is a post I shared on my community that got some response, but not quite as much as I wanted, so I thought I would share here also.  I don't think it is against the ToS of this community, but if it is moderators may of course, remove it.  Respond by comment here, or if you want by PM to me.

Small Business Service Providers.   Greetings entrepreneurs,  I have been doing a bit of high level business planning recently and I feel as if I am regaining a sense of direction.   As part of this effort, I have been describing the specific business services I can provide, and then packaging it at an affordable cost - maybe you have seen some of the "Special Offers" I have posted here.   I have a fairly broad range of skills, but of course I can't do everything myself, and it sometimes occurs to me how much more I could offer by working with other skilled professionals.

I have been thinking of forming a kind of "Small Business Advisory" that would offer a variety of small business services provided remotely.   As part of this effort, I would like to get a better sense of what is out there so am requesting small business service providers describe in the comments here what they do in a sentence or two.

Please make sure you communicate what you do best, or what differentiates you from businesses offering similar services.   Also, give us a sense of your rates, or how you charge - by hour, fixed bid, etc. and any other information that might be helpful.

Even if you are not a perfect match for what I am trying to put together, there really can't be any harm in letting others in this community know what you are doing - it also never hurts to blow your horn a little, and maybe this will help more of us to find ways to work together. ___Small Business Services RFI.   Hi all, here is a post I shared on my community that got some response, but not quite as much as I wanted, so I thought I would share here also.  I don't think it is against the ToS of this community, but if it is moderators may of course, remove it.  Respond by comment here, or if you want by PM to me.

Small Business Service Providers (RFI).    I am considering piecing together a small business advisory but didn't get quite the response I had hoped for on my entrepreneur's community so thought I would share this to my own stream.    If you are in the business of providing small business services of any kind, please let me know.

+Gideon Rosenblatt's musings about the future of Google+

Pinterest as Google+'s New Target

If it's not abundantly clear already, Pinterest is emerging a much more clear competitive frame for understanding the future of Google+. It's an over-simplification, as there are significant difference, but it's still a useful one.

A Newly Emerging Google Plus Strategy
The catalyst for this post were some thoughts from Bradley Horowitz just a couple hours ago:

"Relieved of the notion of integrating with every other product at Google, Google+ can now focus on doing what it’s already doing quite well: helping millions of users around the world connect around the interest they love. Aspects of the product that don’t serve this agenda have been, or will be, retired. But you’ll also see a slew of improvements that make this use case shine."

Connecting people around "interests they love" is another way of saying connecting people through an "interest graph." The battle for the social graph is pretty much over, and Facebook clearly won. Google's new strategy is a clear acknowledgement of this and an indication that it sees the battle for the interest graph as: a) important and b) far from decided.

So, why is the interest graph so important, you ask?

Supporting the Knowledge Graph
Google is making a huge bet on its Knowledge Graph, as a central strategy for maintaining the technological superiority of its search engine. In fact, you could say that this service is actually in the midst of transforming from a search engine to a knowledge engine. Google Now is the visible end of this wedge, a wedge which will soon emerge as a Virtual Personal Assistant, and eventually as a much more powerful artificial intelligence agent.

Understanding which people care about and have influence on particular topics will be one of the very valuable products of deepening Google+ investments in the interest graph. That, in turn, will strengthen the company's ability to execute on its Knowledge Graph strategy.

The Bigger Battle with Amazon
In the big picture, the real competitive battle that Google faces as a company - is with Amazon. People were recently asked their top three places for researching gift purchases in the holiday season. “Online search” registered 45%, down from 49% a year ago. Meantime, the channel growing the most in popularity was the one that includes Amazon, jumping to 37% from 31%.

The Google-Amazon battle is actually a battle of business models, with Google running an advertising strategy and Amazon a commerce strategy. Sure, there are exceptions, and the lines can get very blurry with things like "buy now" button ads, but by and large, that is how the competition is falling out. When you think about it, the searches that Amazon is increasingly winning from Google are searches that are most closely tied to actual sales. They are, in other words, some of the most lucrative advertising that Google has.

Going back to the interest graph, perhaps more than any other company in the world, Amazon has a very detailed and extremely valuable mapping of the products and services you care about. It has, in short, a very lucrative interest graph, deeply embedded into its commerce business model.

As noted above, monetization isn't the only reason that Google is building its interest graph. That said, it will be monetizing its interest graph, and it will be doing that through an advertising strategy - not primarily a commerce strategy like Amazon's.

The Pinterest Opportunity
Pinterest was founded in 2010, one of many startups launched around that timeframe based on the premise of the interest graph. The rest have long-since failed, but Pinterest is now valued at $11 billion and its revenue generating potential is just starting to build steam.

Pinterest's monetization efforts around things like "buy now" buttons are generating lots of intrigue, but I believe the company represents something more than that. They are a kind of fusion between online advertising and a retail environment. Pinterest's CEO Ben Silbermann likes to differentiate Pinterest from Google by noting that the service is about "discovery," not "search." People like to browse collections in Pinterest, to become inspired, to have their interests piqued, to discover stuff through seeming serendipity that they weren't specifically seeking in the first place. In other words, there's a kind of grazing, browsing behavior on Pinterest that does sort of feel like a retail store.

In other words, Pinterest, with its strength in discovery, falls someplace in between the Amazon and Google commerce and advertising strategies. Just as importantly, behind the scenes, Pinterest is building an interest graph, tied to commercially valuable topics. And unlike Amazon, they're not integrating this interest graph with the core competencies of warehousing, returns, fulfillment and other aspects of a commerce company. In short, they're building the kind of interest graph that's of interest to an advertising giant; an interest graph chock-full with all kinds of insights into what end users care most about.

Like Google.

The Differences
Just to be clear: I'm not saying that Google+ will or should suddenly start looking and behaving like Pinterest. Despite the new Collections feature, Google+ is a very different beast. I would be very surprised if we woke up one day to find "buy it now" buttons showing up on Google+. And I don't even think that we'll be seeing many collections of "my favorite lipsticks" or "my favorite dresses" - the kinds of collections that are very common and natural on Pinterest.

That just isn't the culture here on Google+. No, I don't see Google attempting to replicate the kind of "retail" environment strategy that Pinterest seems to be headed towards. The management here is smart enough to recognize the culture differences between G+ and Pinterest. Although now that Google+ is freed from its broader corporate mandates, which I think helped it take a pass on revenue-generating expectations, I will go on record here saying that I would not be at all surprised to find Google reversing its policy of 'no ads' here on Google+ - possibly within the next year or two.

What I do see quite clearly is Google moving down a path where Google+ becomes a more powerful addition to its interest graph building capacity. Search is already a very powerful tool for tracking end user interests over time. What it's missing is the ability to note interest in a more passive browsing mode. This is the discovery mode that Pinterest makes so much of, and it maps nicely to the streams, photos and sharing that now describes the team that will be remaking Google+.

This is sick - and Perry just lost my vote - and before you say I wouldn't have voted for him anyway you are probably right, but it is not impossible - I do listen to the economic proposals of all candidates and have voted for Republicans many times.

So what is next - bars?   rock concerts?  yoga classes?   The gun lovers need to start taking ownership of the slaughter of Americans, and I am sorry - the solution is NOT more guns or even the sudden interest in "mental health".

I am not taking comments - I have already received death threats here for expressing my opinion on this, and I don't want to ruin my Sunday.

I realized I was somewhat hesitant to post about this partly out of fear.  Call me a coward if you want, but a few days ago, someone here who uses a gun as his profile picture was posting some unhinged stuff on one of my posts, and when I looked at his profile he posted about how much he likes to parade around the shopping mall with his gun, and bragged that he even got in an argument once without pulling his gun out.  When I responded that his use of guns was obviously a sign of weakness, not strength, he let go with a string of obscenities.  He also bragged that one day "he would be in the news" and I absolutely believe him.

A few months prior, I posted some cartoon about gun control, and one of the gun nuts commented that "someone should put a bullet through your dead brain".  It took Google about 10 minutes to suspend that account, but that person is still out there - and by coincidence lives in my city only about 10 miles from where I live.  Not a single gun owner on that thread jumped in and said that was wrong - he was in their tribe, and I wasn't.

We can't let these people win, and it should be the responsible gun owners who step up and propose some reasonable solutions, but I doubt they will.  At one time, the NRA represented responsible gun owners, but no longer - they had a purge and got rid of them, and now only care about gun manufacturers and people with gun fetishes who stockpile massive armaments.  I consider the NRA to be close to a criminal organization.  Like the joke goes, what if the "good guys with guns" are from the NRA" - but no one is laughing.   That organization has blood on its hands.

What can be done?  I don't know, but I like the Canadian law that requires gun owners have two people vouch for them before they can get a gun license - and maybe the people who think that person shouldn't have a gun should have a voice also.

We can't just keep getting slaughtered like a bunch of sheep. ___

"We are incredibly focused on making it the best place to engage with others around interests and shared passions. Our most engaged Google+ users are connecting over topics ranging from home brewing to steam punk to tarantulas.

I have to say the job they are doing at that is mediocre at best. In no way did that new "collections" feature make Google an "interest based system" and they aren't even close to being user interest channels.  If anything, they have divided and segmented Google+ even further.

It may be that they have something really fantastic in the works but I haven't seen any evidence of that yet.   Google won't even tell us what is going on with Google Communities - they haven't been upgraded in more than a year, and many communities are dying as a result.

Lawsuits are happening all over the place with this new "Uber economy" companies - that sometimes help, and sometimes exploit, independent contractors.  As this article put it, however, "Homejoy's decision to shut down is the first major casualty in the 1099 economy debate".

Let's talk first about why these lawsuits are happening - in many cases it is simply because these workers are getting screwed.  Silicon Valley has learned that it can profit greatly by treating people as commodities, but they get nothing except poverty wages - no sick leave or unemployment insurance if there is no work, for example (and let't not even talk about the impossible to pay self-employment tax) yet they bear much of the cost and all of the risk of these "jobs".  Who can really blame them for trying to get reclassified as normal employees - they get almost none of the benefits of being an independent contractor - even "control of their own schedule" is largely a myth.

As is usual with these kinds of things, the Silicon Valley kids did great - they all got awesome jobs at Google, while the poor cleaning people got dumped back on the streets.  Those who believe in the power of free markets may think this is a good thing, and to a point they are right - there are positive elements to this, but what seems to have gone unsaid is that these "markets" are really new monopolies.  Uber, for example, is rapidly becoming a global monopoly - one that doesn't' need to pay attention to those pesky worker protection laws.  The biggest freelance work sites - oDesk and eLance merged not too long ago helping to speed the "race to the bottom" even for knowledge workers, and making sure the pay is dirt poor in those professions also.

A while ago, I posted about how Google has started a new program to use unpaid worker to provide technical support https://goo.gl/hA6VgA ,  This was actually trending on Hacker News for a while, with all sorts of interesting comments and opinions.  My point might have been misunderstood by some though.  It wasn't that Google should make these unpaid workers employees, it was that they should make them independent contractors.   What would be wrong with that?  Offer some of them little contracts - maybe $50 an hour or so for four hours a week.  It wouldn't be much, but it would be better than being a mooch and using people's labor for free.

This issue has been ignored for a VERY long time, and now it is really serious.  Silicon Valley's social engineers are busy building a two tiered system, and now they are realizing belatedly that this is causing some big problems.   The solutions isn't necessary to make everyone a corporate employee, it is to find a way to give independent workers a better deal. ___
