I saw Darth Vader playing the violin by the Canada Custom house.  Can you think of a caption for this?

Sometimes I find something that is so interesting and so deserving of attention I can't wait to put it up here.  This is one of those things.  This is a very interesting data visualization of WWII fatalities.  It leaves you with a lot to think about.

I really highly suggest watching.  I don't think there is anyone who is following me who won't learn something from this.  In the comments bellow let me know what you found most interesting.

The photos of Lewis Carroll
Did you know that Lewis Carroll, or rather as he was really called Charles Dodgson,  was a photographer?  I did not!  Apparently, he started taking photos in 1856, when he was a young lecturer at Oxford.  It was a fashionable hobby during that time period.  He took many portraits, especially of children.  In this group there are a number of Alice Liddell who was said to be the inspiration for "Alice in Wonderland".

You can read an article about his photography here: http://goo.gl/eske6A

Miss Piggy on why she is a feminist pig

From:  http://goo.gl/JcF53j

"What is the future of feminism? The answer is obvious — feminism’s future must be proud, positive, powerful, perseverant, and, wherever possible, alliterative. It must believe in itself, share its triumphs, overcome its setbacks and inspire future generations.
I must, in other words, be a lot like … moi."

I was chaperoning a four day  field trip to +IslandWood with 142 5th graders from my daughters school this last week.  I had the chance to help these kids have a unique experience living in the woods in Bainbridge and learning about nature and our environment.  I learned a lot too.  Mostly I learned a lot about 5th graders but I also learned about nature and the history of the area where I live.

This is a photo of Port Blakley, Bainbridge Island. I learned about the fascinating history of this area. At one point it was more famous than Seattle. The largest saw mill in the world was once located here, and brought in industry and immigrants from all over the world. It was once a populous and vibrant village. Now the saw mill is long gone and most of this area has gone back to it's natural state.

100 best love stories from American cinema and 100 best comedies from American cinema compiled by  the American Film Institute.

I came across this link to the 100 best love stories in American cinema from the American Film Institute.

I have to look through and see if there are any I haven't watched this weekend.

Also along with the list of 100 Passions they compiled 100 Laughs, which is their choice of the 100 funniest movies in American cinema. You can find that list here:

Do you agree or disagree with their choices?

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, and how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Yes, and how many years can a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea?
Yes, and how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?

This was my entertaining read on a Monday morning.   This was probably my favorite quote:

12. “He goes into his brain, and then you just see he is in another world. He still does that. Now I just leave him be because I know he is designing a new rocket or something.” — Elon Musk’s mother describing how as a child Elon sometimes seemed to drift off into trances. He wouldn’t respond when spoken to and would have a distant look in his eyes. Musk’s parents and physicians thought maybe he was deaf and removed his adenoid glands thinking that would improve his hearing. It made no difference.

Which is yours?

I loved this article in the Seattle Times this morning

"We make our world by what we choose to see.

Poet Marie Howe defines poetry as “a cup of language to hold what can’t be said.” This is why poems are spoken at funerals and weddings, moments of heightened emotion, when we reach for language to carry us beyond the limits of ordinary speech to say the unsayable.
I believe poetry is also a bridge between solitudes. At its best, it transports us — through the nonlinear and irresistible persuasion of music and metaphor — into a state of receptive empathy, the closest thing we can get to truly understanding what it’s like to see the world as someone else does, to live inside another’s skin.

Poetry doesn’t substitute for relationships with actual people. But just as poem X might help me empathize with what it’s like to lose a spouse, poem Y might helpme understand wha... mehr »

Photo by me in Victoria B.C. at sunset on Saturday night. And because I am listening to this right now, which I read yesterday was sung while Sinead O'Conner was thinking about her mother:

It's been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing
I said nothing can take away these blues
'Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you.

“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”
