In the town of Loveland, CO today there was a bomb scare caused by a "suspicious package" in the 5500 block of Crossroads Blvd. The area was shut down. The all clear has since been given. What was the "suspicious package"? I'll leave you to guess for now.

Some women and I presented a talk on female genital mutilation tonight. I wasn't sure how it would go over; it's such a tough topic. It went over well. The audience was engaged and asked lots of questions. More than one person compared it to a TEDTalk and told us we should present it in more settings. (It was presented to a class studying human rights cinema.) I'm happy with the way it came together.

I'd like your help, my lovely Plussers.

Discussing feminist film again, and I broached that I think Billy Elliot (http://bit.ly/IMDB-Billy_Elliot) is an example of the rare feminist film that is not focused on a female. It definitely still looks at sex and gender stereotypes and inequalities. Some folks agreed. Some didn't. But, offhand, we were unable to think of other examples of feminist film that are not female-focused. There are obvious reasons for this, but I'd still like to find other examples. I considered To Wong Foo, but  I couldn't decide if the focus is really on the men or on Carol Ann.

Help me, Plussers. You're my only hope. Non-Hollywood and non-US films are very welcome. Thanks!!!

Google+ dominates poll despite stacked deck!

Lifehacker is running a poll, asking "What’s Your Social Network of Choice?"

But they give Facebook and Twitter an unfair advantage: At the bottom are "Like" buttons for Facebook and Twitter. They're giving a tool to virally promote the poll on two of the social networks, but not the others. As a result, Facebook and Twitter have WAY more votes than Linkedin, Pinterest, MySpace and Instagram.

But Google+ is dominating the poll anyway, with (at the time I write this) twice as many votes as Facebook.

That's not enough.

Since Lifehacker decided to favor Facebook and Twitter, let's send them some Google+ love in the form of MASSIVE votes for Google+:

 I was part of a discussion tonight about feminist cinema. I disagreed with the discussion leader about what makes a film feminist, as he believes that to qualify a film has to have a group focus (e.g., A League of Their Own v. G.I. Jane). What do you think makes a movie "feminist,"  and what films do you think embody this?

Me, I'm still trying to figure that out, but I think there should be a female POV and powerful (in some way, though the how can vary immensely and may not be obvious throughout the film) female(s). One film I think engenders this, though I'll get a lot of flack for it, is Mona Lisa Smile. Julia Roberts character is both empowered and powerless. She wants to awaken her students (female) to what they are capable of, but doesn't see how she, like the establishment, is trying to limit their options. 

what are your thoughts? I'd love to know.

I love when a group gets creative for a cause. This shows you that an intriguing grassroots campaign can be very effective.

This is the sort of story that will have people decrying it, so I'll state up front that I haven't checked snopes or anywhere else to discover the veracity of the story. I haven't because this story addresses behavior that does still happen. Women are still looked down upon for taking charge of their sexual lives (e.g., carrying condoms). People in open relationships are looked at as victims or whores, sometimes both. And some border agents abuse their power. As far as I know this story is true in fact. However, even if it isn't, it holds truth.

Science and Cooking

EdX has added more classes to their lineup, including this awesome course for next fall. A combination of cooking, physics, and engineering, offered through HarvardX. I'm trying to see if I have the time for it, but I'm definitely considering registering. If anyone else registers for it, let me know. We can compare notes.

My microvictory was at work this week. We had an interruption in some services we provide. Unfortunately, this included our email and phones going down and our backup phone system not kicking-in. I hopped on our social media channels and kept our customers informed with up to date information. I've been after the Powers That Be to recognize the usefulness of social media in a business like ours. I believe they now have a better understanding of how and why we can use it. w00t!

I sometimes have a hard time making myself be social. This weekend I went out with some girlfriends and spent the day in Denver watching the St. Patty's parade and then celebrating the day. I'd wanted to cancel, but for no good reason other than the stress of major socializing (dancing at multiple bars with throngs of people), but I didn't cancel, and that was good.

Google Sets
Give it two examples, and Google's spreadsheet can make a list of almost anything. 

Create a new spreadsheet in Google Drive, type mazda in A1 and honda in A2 (the first column), highlight the two cells and then press Ctrl (or Option for Mac) while clicking and dragging the small blue box from the lower-right corner to select additional cells where to place the Google Sets results.

Yesterday +TechCrunch  reported that if you make a spreadsheet in Google Drive (Google Docs, formerly), enter and highlight the names of two beers, and pull down on the corner of the spreadsheet cell while holding Option or Control, the app will automatically fill the following cells with the names of other beers.
